sword fights in fedual japan err the afterlife

I got the 2nd season of bleach a few weeks ago, put it off watching it so I could watch the first season of Bleach over again (yes it’s that good of a show) and now I am finally done watching season 2. Or where things really get interesting has Ichigo crosses over to do battle in feudal Japan err eh the soul society.
Story
Ichigo Kursaki was a typical 15 year old boy who could see ghosts, but his life changed when he met Rukia Kuchiki a soul reaper who’s job is to cleanse corrupt souls known has Hallows from the world of the living. To save his family from one of the hallows Ichigo had to take her power, because of this her brother Byakuya and his lieutenant Renji came and arrested her. Ichigo tired to fight and stop them but was nearly killed by Byakuya and lost the powers of the soul reaper. Ichigo recovered and train under Uhaurara a mysterious sales men that Rukia knew and recovered the powers of the soul reaper. And he got a new zanpakto sword named Zangetsu, but he almost transformed into a hallow during the experience. With the intense training behind him he and his friends Orhemiea, Uryu, Chad, and the talking cat Yourichi step into a portal that lead them to the soul society. They only have 2 weeks to find and get Ryukia out of there before she is sentenced to death.
That was season 1 and season 2 starts briskly after that. They arrive in the soul society and they find themselves in the Rukon district that looks a lot like Feudal Japan. And they find that the area they need to get to is in the Seritei where the soul reapers reside. To do this they enlist the help Kukaku Shiba and her younger brother Ganju who hates Soul Reapers and isn’t to found of Ichigo. Seems like Ganjus brother Kaien was a soul reaper but another soul reaper betrayed him and murdered him. He wants to go to the seritei and find out why his brother thanked them for killing him. Kukaku way of getting them in there is by cannon ball.
Once inside things get interesting the cannon ball malfunctions and blows up in mid air, while every one survives the explosion un hurt it separates the group. Ichigo is stuck with Ganju of all people, Uryu must protect Orheimiea, while Chad and Yourichi each find themselves alone.
The story goes on from there and it’s usually fast pace only slowing down whenever there is a need for character introduction or development. And there are lots of charecters to be developed. Has the story is not content to allow the Soul Reapers to be just bad guys for Ichigo to beat up. There is a side story about a conspiracy to over throw the soul society and it looks like Captain Aizen was killed. While the soul reapers try to deal with that and the pesky Ryoka (the name given to Ichigo and his friends) each captain and there lieutenants are shown and given quite a bit of character development. Not all the Captains are ruthless, some seem to be quite merciful and not quite understanding about the death sentence of Rukia. This is becomes a huge benefit to Ichigo later in the series has it seems every soul reaper he runs into and fights becomes one of his allies in season 3. This includes Kenpachi Zurachi of squad 11 who’s job is to protect the seritie. Kenpachi is incredibly strong and loves to fight but like Ichigo is still ignorant of the true powers of his Zanpakto.
The main villain for season 2 when it comes to the soul reapers though is Byakuya who is shown has cold hearted. Wishing for his own men to die if they fail at capturing the Ryoka and not even batting an eye when his own sister is convicted of the death sentence. While he is shown to be a cold hearted person in season 2 he is more fleshed out in season 3. Another villain all though your not sure who side he is on is Gin Ichimaru, this guy just looks like he’s got something up his sleeves the second he’s introduced (and he had a quick intro in the first season). And it’s still true here you don’t know if he’s planning something evil, or if he just happens to be at the wrong spot at the wrong time.
Renji who fights Ichigo half way through the season also gets more screen time. And after Ichigo wins Renji tells Ichigo the story of his and Rukias relationship. This not only gives a lot of character to Renji but Rukia has well has the two grew up on the wrong side of the tracks in till they decided to become soul reapers and Rukia got adopted into the wealthy Kuchiki family.
But don’t think that the series has gone to serious just because it has hit it’s first big arc, on the contrary. The jokes still keep coming from the left field when you least expect. Ganju and Ichigo fight even when there about to be slaughter by enemies, and jokes about the two constantly being chased are done all over the place, and even Pac-Man is brought into it in one joke.
There is a lot to like about season 2 the only bad thing is it doesn’t cover the whole arc, not that surprises me because the entire arc is around 40 episodes long. We get to a little over the half way point with Ichigo entering his first fight with Byokuya out side of Rukia cell and then being rescued by Yourichi who reveals his/her human form. We don’t get into any of the ban-kai episodes of the story but they will be a major point in the battles in act 3.
The DVD set
The DVD set looks pretty much like the season 1 box set. This one is red with Ichigo and Renji on the front. Inside the cover is a picture of old man Zangetsu the spirit that lives inside Ichigo sword and helps him out from time to time. The DVD has 5 flip open panels where the discs are held and each one has art work underneath of a character. Over all the box is pretty neat.
The discs extras are the same has season 1. A text less opening and closing exists on each of the disc. Which is kind of a rip because we only see one closing credit per disc and 13 episode each have there own closing number featuring a captain and a lieutenant of a squad. We also have previews of other shonan jump videos, art work, and manga advertisements. There are also interviews with the voice actors from the English dub. This time we have the VA’s for Rukia, Renji, Byakuya, and Hintatro are interviewed in a 20 minute clip. Add in the sub and it’s not a bad amount of extras for an anime dvd set.
Final Recommendation.
Season 2 keeps up the pace, the humor, and the interesting characters from the first season of the show. Add in some nice features and this is a must pick up for fans of Bleach. The only bad thing is it doesn’t finish the whole arc and I hope we don’t have to wait a full year for season 3.

If you haven't heard or seen Bleach and you are an Anime lover you should be ashamed of yourself. Just got through watching this season with my wife and right after it got done we were searching the net to see when Season 3 comes out.
The storyline keeps you interested and definitely hasn't gotten old yet. If you like Naruto then you will definitely enjoy Bleach. If you haven't heard of either then what are you waiting for? BUY! :)
