I only love the first half of the series from where Marlene with her elite army went on a mission on earth to save the sleepers to where she and Yuji managed to leave earth and return to the space station -- second earth... The second part of the series has gone too wild, especially hard to digest the ending...
Speaking of the DVD, it's one of the best anime DVD I've seen so far. It has Hollywood grade DVD quality such as transition menus, seamless angles on openings and endings for US credits and Japanese credits, loads of extras are spread out thru 8 discs. Some good extras include mecha and bug from design to production, opening song "break free" extended version and ending song "Love taught me" extended version (both are performed by voice actress of Marlene in the anime, Kuwashima Hōko, who can perform from very strong voice at the beginning of the series, and very soft voice thru the end of the series, very interesting to hear the huge difference.
The video quality is good although some noises are thoughout the series, you just cannot expect too much since it's a 1998 production and it's not a pure digital production. The audio quality is very good, the music scores have many different styles, and just fit the picture well, there is also enough bass and surround effects (2 channel dolby soundtrack on both English and Japanese track only, has to use Dolby prologic II to hear this) on battle scenes. The English track is good since they didn't change the script a lot on blue gender, it's the one I originally heard on broadcast. The Japanese track has a lower volume, have to crank up my system a bit, but turns out to be good also. There are two subtitle tracks on the DVD, English subtitle crossponds to the English track, which I originally thought it to be crossponding to the Japanese track... The package, there's a booklet showing brief intro for every episode and list of extra features on the disc. Overall, the DVD is top-notch Hollywood quality stuff, the anime series is only good on first half IMO. And try to avoid the movie as much as possible...
I would recommend this to a friend

Blue Gender is a pretty good Anime one which you have to watch more then once to get what's going on. The story is well told and that makes it enjoyable.
