Genre: Action, Sci-Fi, Space, Mecha, Super Power, Adventure, Drama (according to Funimation). I'll add: Horror, Gore, and Romance. Length: 26 episodes + 1:38 movie "In the year 2031, humankind was replaced as the dominant species on Earth# It is unknown how long they have existed# Some sightings date back to 2017# They are known only as the Blue# These monstrous, insect-like creatures now exert their terrible will upon the planet# As a result, the remains of the human race have fled into outer space to escape the infestation of the Blue# Suddenly awakened after 22 years in suspended animation, Yuji Kaido finds himself thrust into a nightmarish reality# Yuji soon learns the survival of the entire human race rests in his hands#" If you watched the Adult Swim block on Cartoon Network back in the first couple years that it was running in the early 2000's, then you probably saw this series# Thinking back on it, there wasn't a TON of stuff that was edited out from then# Sure, they left out the little bit of T&A, language and some of the gore, but the bulk of the action and slaughter was there# The fact that Funimation has this listed as TV PG has me ROFLing like crazy# There isn't a single episode in here that can get away with a PG rating! Language, nudity, extreme violence, graphic content: 16 and up/M rating at least# On to the review! Blue Gender is one of those hardcore Sci-Fi anime series which keeps you watching more and more just waiting to see what's coming next# One of the things that it does best is leaving you with a constant feeling of dread# Practically any time that the characters felt some hope about their situation, something happened and killed more of their friends# It just doesn't want you to be happy! But, it's true# The characters aren't superhumans #at least at the beginning!# and they do die# They do manage to kill a lot of Blue, but at this point, the Blue outnumber humans on Earth by at least 100 to 1 if not more# Their chances of survival are not good# Still, Yuji and Marlene manage to make it out alive each time even as their companions and friends die around them# There really aren't a lot of negatives about Blue Gender# Personally, really don't like Yuji# He starts off as a whiny little brat who's only thinking about himself# Then he thinks about Marlene a little bit# And then he goes back to only thinking about himself again; granted he's got some extenuating circumstances at this point as well# This series came out in 1999# 15 years old = not the greatest graphics. It's still very well-made, but it's also in the old 4:3 aspect ratio so it only takes up part of the screen unless you're still using a tube TV. Also, I felt that most of the side-characters had better voicing jobs than the main characters did. Not the best English dub out there. The only REALLY negative here is the movie, The Warrior. DO NOT WATCH IT! Way too many holes in the plot. Nothing is explained properly. There's no character build-up. The final Blue from the series is tossed into the middle and loses all of its epicness. And the ending is just plain horrible. Yeah, that's about it. On the positive, the disc with the movie does house all of the extras which are actually pretty good. I'm a huge fan of the opening song, Set Me Free, as well as the closing song, Love Taught Me. I prefer the English versions as well. Such a shame you can't get them in CD format. Overall, I really enjoyed this series. It's definitely not for everyone as it can be very depressing and is loaded with gore; both human and Blue. Also, the guy that does the voice for Rick is also the VA for Goku! I kinda wanted to shout "Kamehameha!" at him -_-. Pick this one up, and I'm sure you'll love it!

Blue Gender is one of the greatest, yet one of the least publicized series out there.I bought this series on a gut impulse. I am a big fan of anime and have been for several years now. Over time I began watching and analyzing different ones I've seen. Sadly though, many series turn out to be disappointing. This series is the exact opposite. I had never heard of it, or seen it for sale anywhere. I saw the cover and read the synopsis and got hooked. I bought it and it was one of the best video purchases I ever made. From start to finish it is action packed, dramatic, fun, and emotional. This series may be a bit much too handle at first because it is very gritty and has incredible realism to it. If you are a fan of anime and are sick of series disappointing you than blue gender is for you.

This is a great anime. The story, plot and characters are rich and full. The story had me watching it from start to finish in a matter of days. I watched the Warrior movie that came with it and I wish I hardn't done so. It's sloppy and full of holes. Don't watch it and stick to the series instead, you won't be disappointed.
