It does cover the speakers at the bottom but it has openings on the front in order to let the sound out. I believe they did that to protect the speakers from dust or anything that would get in them. I can hear just fine. I don’t think it affects the sound and it’s a plus if it protects the speakers from getting any dust or water in them.
