    A different kind of Western

I love it when a Western film sticks to the language of the time period. Not too many movies I've seen of the genre does so. The HBO series Deadwood being an exception. One really graphic scene with the "Troglodyte's" torturing one of the deputy's was a bit cringe-worthy, but overall a good story. Good to see Kurt Russell in a western film again.

I did a blind buy with this film just because Kurt Russell was in it. Being a huge fan of the man I did read a little about it online but tried to stay as unspoiled as I could. Basic premise is Kurt Russell plays a sheriff of a small town and one night some people get kidnapped by a tribe of Neanderthal like indians. A good portion of the movie is him and a group traveling to get to where the tribe lives. This is a little bit of a slower film but the great cast keeps things interesting through the film. The end does have some brutality and is a nice pay off. The gore at the end is the only reason this is getting lumped into the horror genre. For the most part it is a western with some gore. I think it's a good film well worth watching.

What an unusual film. I purchased it because I like westerns, and Kurt Russell is always a joy to watch. I had no idea this movie was a horror/ mythological creature feature, but what an interesting watch this was. It took awhile for me to get into it, but it won me over. Pretty violent and graphic too.

This movie starts off with 2 very recognizable faces encountering the antagonists, then slows down for a large portion of the film. It then feels almost like a typical western, but after a slow paced build, the third act will keep you on the edge of your seat, and the weak-stomached with a hand over their mouth.

A very entertaining western. Kurt Russell is excellent. Mathew Fox is great, playing against type & Patrick Wilson is very good. Richard Jenkins is fabulous & totally unrecognizable in a supporting role. The film is violent & a little gory, but still one of the best of the year.

I was recommended this movie by a friend and while I'm not into westerns, I'm into horror. I thought this was a fantastic movie with a great cast. It was full of surprises and was refreshingly original. However, I felt it could have used more bonus features or a combo pack with the DVD.

    BONE TOMAHAWK

In the Fantastic Fest Q&A, Zahler stresses that he did not make Bone Tomahawk as a horror film, even though parts are intended to frighten the audience. Anyone expecting a traditional gorefest will be disappointed, because Zahler is more interested in exploring character than filling the screen with blood. Bone Tomahawk contains several gruesome scenes that probably would not survive intact for the film to obtain an R rating, but they are merely exclamation points. Far more memorable is the deliberate and suspenseful buildup to those intense moments, as four isolated men confront their inner demons under a vast and lonely sky. Highly recommended.

Low budget movie, BUT it is worth a look. Starts out slow and builds to the gruesome end. Great dialogue and the lack of a soundtrack definitely adds to the horrors that await our companions. A must see in my opinion if, you like the western/horror genre mixed together.

'Bone Tomahawk' is one of those movies that you're either going to love or hate depending on your personal proclivities. I love a good western and I love a good horror movie and 'Bone Tomahawk' delivered both to me in a nicely wrapped little package featuring a great cast turning in some fine performances. RJL has put together a pretty great Blu-ray release of this film featuring a terrific A/V presentation along with some decent extra features. If you're a horror or westerns fan, consider this one recommended.

Good to see Kurt Russell back in the saddle. I grew up on Westerns and was always surprised when there wasn't more serious treatments after the release of Unforgiven. This movie dips a little into the more graphic side of brutality but there's some awesome dramatic sequences. It's nice to see a film take it's own pace (remember how long Alien was before everything really started happening?) without having to use giant explosions or "epic" fight sequences to keep your attention - that's what the actors are for. If you're a fan of Kurt Russell, or Westerns in general, I'd definitely recommend.

Wasn't the greatest Western I have seen, but for a genre that has been on the decline, or just flat out non-existent, for the last few decades, it's good to see there are still great movies being made with the genre in mind. Any Western fan should give it a watch.

I wasn't impressed with this film by any means. On a positive note, the dialogue is quite good. Interaction between the characters is performed well. The problem with this film is that it has been acknowledged as a horror western, and you don't get much of the horror until its brutal climax. The movie is a slow burn. I would definitely recommend viewing this product before purchasing. You may not be getting what you're expecting.

Saw this movie at an independant film convention and I must say, this was one of the best films I have ever seen. It draws you in and keeps a hold till the end. I can't say much without ruining the film but i will say, it has some graphic violence and gore. It's not on screen just for the sake of being on screen, it actually fits into the characters and story being told, it was shocking to see at first but it keeps you tense during the film. Worth watching, not for kids unless you like giving kids nightmares and haunting images they can't handle, if you do then be my guest. An unexpected great film and a must see.

This film combines two genres that rarely get seen together: the Western and Horror. The gore is grounded and visceral, but not overused. Its also a slow burn story, which works for the rising tension as the characters reach the end of their journey.

A Whole Different Kind of Western

This movie sort of reminds me of From Dusk Till Dawn in that the story line changes quite a bit from the first half of the movie which is a typical Western in it's own right to the horror and gore that follows in the second half.

Although this appears to be a low budget movie at first, the acting is actually quite good. Kurt Russell plays a sheriff in the old west that goes looking for his missing deputy and the town Doctor that were kidnapped by a group of cannibals.

I copied this review because it was 100% correct It has a nice line in wry chatter and a pleasantly old-fashioned ‘lost posse’ plot with engaging, odd characters striving against the wilderness while swapping cynical frontier wisdom

Circa – western America late 1890’s. A daring and bold Western Drama with combined elements of horror, violence and exciting adventure. Great character development and each protagonist takes a challenging journey as the story-line develops. Superb entertainment is crafted into this well scripted and directed movie that was shot in just 21 days. It’s all very old school – no CGI but none-the-less there’s solid visual story-telling in this phenomenal Horse opera which easily translates to a Great Viewing Experience for Mature Audiences.

This movie starts out with some of the town's people being taken. A posse is created to go after them. It doesn't go the best for the posse. Kurt Russell did a great job. The deputy was good to, definitely recommend
