Sony has transferred this title to UHD with positive results. Since the Bluray was already reference quality for the time, I expected improvements to be minimal. And while the UHD is definitely better in all areas, you probably won’t experience the bump you’d receive from an older more neglected catalog title. This was the late director John Singleton’s first effort and remains his best. Recommend.

This is a classic film. Let me repeat that. This is a classic 90s film. Sony has done a wonderful job remastering Boyz n the Hood for 4K UHD Blu-ray. You get an excellent, film-like transfer with a very good amount of grain, improved colors, along with upgraded Dolby ATMOS audio. It doesn't get any better than this. This is a very high quality presentation of Boyz n the Hood and Sony Pictures definitely handled the film with care. It's like a pristine 1 to 1 copy of a 35mm reel. There's no other way to describe it. Shout out to Best Buy for having this in stock. I just wish they would use some a little bubble wrap before placing it in a cardboard box, to prevent damage during the shipping journey. Anyway, this is definitely worth the purchase, especially if you have a 4K TV and a good surround sound system. Definitely looking forward to more classics on the 4K UHD Blu-ray format.

Ok when I watch films I do so on a 180" movie theater screen with full 7.1 surround sound and the Buttkicker transducer system. This is not to Bragg but to give an idea of the clarity that I rate both 4k and 1080p films. 1st off regardless if you are huge into 4k or still collect Blu-ray; I will add that with today's (Oppo) upscaling technology along with upscaling technology on theater projectors that the difference between Blu-ray & 4k is minimal. I will say that going over 180" that you will likely see a difference and recommend 4k for 150"+ screens. Boys In the Hood was a Solid film that did a great job displaying the choices made available and the lifestyle of growing up in the hood. While it is no American History X, I still liked the film a lot ON BLU-RAY! The picture quality was significantly improved for anyone who had this on DVD. The Sound was just OK, I'm sorry but the score was lacking and there really isn't an emotional tone to marvel at. One thing that stood out against ALL others was the performance by Ice Cube. This is the only film I can recall where Ice Cube doesn't act like an over the top gangster in both language and body, yet this is the one film he is supposed to be that to the core.... What can I say about the rest of the cast! Gooding Jr. Was fantastic as was the remainder of the cast. Kudos to the director!

The late John Singleton's Oscar-nominated Boyz n the Hood upgrades to 4K UHD Blu-ray. This story of friends living in and trying to survive in South Central L.A. is just as searingly poignant and often gut-wrenching today as it was in 1991. The performances are pitch-perfect and Sony gives this film a worthwhile upgrade. Featuring a native 4K HDR10 presentation with a new Dolby Atmos audio track, the film looks and sounds better than ever worthy of the upgrade.

The movie really brought South Central L.A. home to many of us who had no idea what was happening. I see the movie as a beacon during the time it came out and today. It was educating on the problems of the poor. Some who live looking at a future and those who live in day to day mode. It addresses themes like one parent households, drugs and fast money, setting boundaries, what is manhood?, community vs. Police, gang culture, street education vs. Parental wisdom and gentrification. All of these issues are playing out now in many peoples lives today.

SYNOPSIS: Tre (Cuba Gooding Jr.) is sent to live with his father, Furious Styles (Larry Fishburne), in tough South Central Los Angeles. Although his hard-nosed father instills proper values and respect in him, and his devout girlfriend Brandi (Nia Long) teaches him about faith, Tre's friends Doughboy (Ice Cube) and Ricky (Morris Chestnut) don't have the same kind of support and are drawn into the neighborhood's booming drug and gang culture, with increasingly tragic results. Very strong performances from the cast. Used to own this great film on VHS and DVD. Spent far less on this Blu-ray compared to what I did for the previous formats I bought it on! Be sure to check out the rest of John Singleton's filmography.

A Beautiful Case Representing A Classic Film

Boyz In The Hood is still a powerful drama set within the ghettos of Los Angeles during the 90's. A riveting, coming of age story that is engaging, heartbreaking, and expresses a truth that is relevant even today. As for this edition, it is a beautiful graffiti case that represents the film as well as being loaded with a good amount of featurettes, commentary with director John Singleton, and music videos based on the great soundtrack from the film. A great purchase and a timeless classic of transitioning from young adult to manhood as well as being stuck between progressing and regressing as human beings.

UltraHD breathes new life into this East LA film

Boyz 'N the Hood has withstood the test of time, and held up well as a critically acclaimed coming-of-age story in East LA. Along with some of Spike Lee's films, it helped define a new genre in American cinema. This 4K release looks and sounds fantastic in UltraHD, and the steelbook packaging stands up better than the typical cheap plastic. Highly recommended.

I have watched this movie a bunch of times since the 90's. I truly consider it one of the greatest movies ever made. To the people that have not watched it and think it is just some hood movie, you are totally wrong. It is a powerful movie with a strong message that takes place in the hood. It shows you how some kids really want to get out of the hood and have a better life, but sometimes the circumstances and chain of events changes everything.

This was an exciting title to see released on 4K; while the steelbook itself uses the same pop cover art as the limited edition steelbook release of the blu-ray the gold/black lining was a welcoming change to the image, and of course, the results were amazing; a great addition to anyone's collection, highly recommended with a great deal of special features for any avid fan.

This classic paved the way, along with Spike Lee's films, for African American film makers. It was john Singleton's and his cast's & crew's milestone movie of life in LA in the early 90s, centering on the legendary rivalry between the bloods & the crips. Stirring, creative, violent beneath the calm surface. Highly recommended. I hadn't seen since it was first released, and had forgotten how great it was. And still is.

Powerful in performance and message. John Singleton's Boyz N the Hood tackles this dangerous subject with sleek direction and emotional drive. The script is intangible to any other in its genre or subject and with the aid of Gooding, Jr., Ice Cube, Fishburne and casts makes for a masterful picture. 4.5/5

Great movie that can show the urban area in Los Angeles. Coincidently, Lloyd Avery II died in prison after he was strangled and struck on the head by Kevin Roby in 2005.Two others characters were Dedrick D. Gobert who was fatally shot during a fight with several gang members in Mira Loma, California in 1994 and Lexie Bigham died in a car accident in Los Angeles on December 17, 1995. This is so sad in real life.

For John Singleton's first outing, this is an ambitious film. Coming back to this film after seeing it in 1991, a few things are pretty apparent: themes are disparate but show the give and take of characters and their relationships, and the complexities of youth, life and circumstance. Having listened to the commentary, this is confirmed with the deft touches and respect to the film craft. Its amazing to me with each actors performances, there are some cringe worthy spots, but overall this is a required film (I think) from the storyteller narrative.

From story to casting, this film grabs you and never lets go. From the friendships formed in childhood to the threat of gun violence, we follow the lives of young black men from adolescence to adulthood. Some make it, some do not. But what's endearing about the film is how much we care about black lives that truly matter. Shot years before the phrase became popular .. this film is timeless.
