The Smart Grinder Pro Aces the Competition!

The Breville Smart Grinder Pro that I bought to replace my ancient, failed Cuisinart coffee grinder, has been a wonderful addition to my wife’s and my kitchen. The former Grinder did grinding mostly by guesswork, because we had to stand and watch it grind until the very loud motor softened its sound indicating the grind was complete. The Smart Grinder Pro lets us choose a grind setting, then the amount of cups, start it with a simple button touch, and we can walk away while it quietly grinds and then shuts itself off. When the grind is done, once the freshly ground coffee has been moved to our French Press Carafe, the machine goes to sleep after a few minutes and the digital display shuts off until the next use. The ease of use and the ability to change the grind selection so quickly, makes this machine a superior selection, and its quietness is just a pleasant bonus. My wife and I recommend it highly, and we would purchase it again if we needed to.

    Coffee to espresso!

Super user friendly! Can grind from espresso to coffee. The only learning curve is knowing what grinds work per coffee bean AND your coffee and/or espresso machine. That's all preference but needed something that can grind for my bambino and my drip coffee machine as well.

I have used a Capressa burr grinder for years but it finally broke. This grinder is pretty expensive but it works very well indeed. Once set up it is convenient to use and produces a very consistent grind which can be exactly fine tuned. If you use a fine grind it tends to clog which has to be cleared. Not hard to do but it defeats the automatic measurement function. I don’t care because I always measure out my grounds anyway and it doesn’t clog at my setting which is medium.

The grinder works well given how I use it. I grind enough beans at one time to fill up a plastic tub, which I put in the refrigerator. I also freeze the beans so they don't get oily. Finally, I clean the machine after evey use. I've used a small Krups for years, which was fine, but it was a lot of work to fill the container. The Breville is much easier.

Relatively quiet. So far operates as as advertised. It is not too large. Best feature for us is that you can adjust the amount of coffee per cup brewed and then it will automatically apply that proportion whether you brew 4 cups or 12 cups. It is pricey, but much less than professional machines. First grinder, so no prior experience. Typically we just grind straight into a paper filter which works easy enough.

Great Grinder, Beware of Best Buy’s “price match”

The grinder is fantastic, especially if you have a latte machine. Just put the wand in the grinder and it fills it for you consistently and perfectly every time. The grinder deserves 5 stars, the reason I gave 3 stars is because of how Best Buy treats its loyal customers. I bought this grinder for 199.95 on Black Friday deal and use $30 of rewards I had. Then the grinder price was dropped to $159.99. So I did a price match online and it said it would adjust me the $40 drop. NOT WHAT HAPPENED when I accepted what was promised and I clicked accept, they then said I paid $169 for the blender and credited back $10 not the $40 difference that I was told. SO I LOST THE $30 IN REWARDS. I went to the store and talked to the manager and was told to wait and see if I got the $30 in rewards back. Clearly that is not going to happen. BEWARE- Best Buy will not price match if you use rewards. Even though you earned the rewards with previous purchases, they will take that out of the price match. No where on the site does it say that and when you do the price match they will say the will give back the difference, but it is not true!!

Another quality product from Breville. Very easy to use. Would recommend buying a bag of cheap whole beans to “find your grind” for whatever style coffee you like - that way you can dial it in or get close to it without wasting expensive coffee beans - for example I need to grind a little finer than what they recommend to get the consistency that works best for my coffee maker.

Excellent grinder, but somewhat loud and messy

There are so many choices to when it comes to burr grinders, and while this is my first one, it has been a game-changer in my coffee drinking game. I have historically bought whole-bean coffee and used a blade grinder (much like a spice-grinder), which resulted in a wide range of granule sizes in the grounds, all the way from powder to something more appropriate for a French press (>1mm diameter). The Breville Smart Grinder Pro has adjustable grind sizes for any brewing style and method, churns out consistent granule sizes, and does it quickly. It may seem crazy to say this, but since I switched to this burr grinder, my coffee tastes better (probably because I am actually getting the grounds all the same size and infusing the water more consistently). Use use a Ninja coffee system, and right now, I pour my grinds into a #4 unbleached (brown) conical filter, and it is amazing. So why the 4 stars? Two reasons: 1) the machine is very loud, and since I am the first one up in the morning, sometimes it does disturb my 1-year old who sleeps on the main level (even though a dining room and living room separates the spaces). 2) It is very messy, and where I get my beans from a local roaster, the little papery skins from the beans flake everywhere around the machine, the collection canister, and the counter. Perhaps I am doing something wrong or I'm missing a part, but I suggest you keep a small hand-vac nearby to collect the mess regularly.

This grinder works very well and I love the ease of use and range of grinder settings. I would be happier if there was more room for the portafilter, so it could accommodate the filter, plus a funnel and twin spout. As it is, I have to unscrew the spout from the bottom of the portafilter.

I use this with a technivorm drip machine and usually weigh the grind out too get my "perfect" ratio... this machine has presets based on granule size and time. I have been able to dial it in and mostly rely on the preset conditions for a repeatable cup of coffee. It's very quiet, easy to clean, and very clean while using. My old grinder spewed grounds all over when I disengaged the container... the design on this is pretty great!

    Best Grinder I've ever owned

This Grinder is fantastic, easy to use, and churns out coffee perfectly. I never fill the hopper as I change coffee and espresso very often, but it's big enough for all my needs. Coffee flows smoothly and quietly through this machine. And the settings allow me to dial in the perfect grind for my espresso, french press and drip machine. It's very solid, and very well designed, everything about this unit is well thought out. High end coffee snobs might not care for it, it's less than $1000, but this is a great grinder at a great price for the coffee fan getting into espresso on a budget. This machine is super easy to use and maintain. You might be tempted to buy a cheaper grinder and I can't blame you, but if you are ready to make the leap, and you want these features this machine is the real deal.

I really like this machine. I had an older breathful model, which I replaced, which had the hopper and grinder combined with the espresso machine, but decided to buy a separate grinder from the machine when I upgraded. This grinder has lived up to expectations, I mostly make espresso, but I also clan beans for a mocha and I like it has such a fast variety of grind sizes. The grinders use and you can easily make adjustments to get the desired grind you want. It looks nice and it’s easy to clean..

this is my first "fancy" burr coffee grinder, as I'm tired of the mess the fifty dollar grinders cause (coffee dust everywhere, inconsistent grinds both in quantity and quality). - first off, the magnetic espresso insert/coffee insert are impressive, the pull out tray makes it easy to clean, this is a step up from the standard coffee grinders - My coffee maker is nice, but my espresso machine was the best deal on a 15 bar machine I could find at the time. With my previous coffee grinder I needed to tamp down my grounds. With this coffee grinder, and my current machine, if I tamp down the grounds on a fine grind it's too compact for my espresso machine to process. - the grinder, out of the box, ground a double shot of espresso a bit heavy - I've been able to adjust this (and the removeable tray makes for easy clean up when you get an over grind on the espresso cup). - out of the box, for the coffee grind, I've not noticed much difference (outside of a more consistent amount of grounds) - - the use of silicone in the lids (both the whole bean and the ground tray) I would suspect offers a bit more protection from any oxidation of those coffee beans. . . . . is it worth four times the price? Maybe not (if cleanign up coffee dust in your kitchen is part of the daily routine - and it doesn't bother you), but it's certainly a lot less mess and an elevated machine for the at home coffee/espresso drinker

This is an expensive, but high quality grinder. I purchased this with the intention of owning it for a very long time; so far, it seems built to last. All of the controls are high quality, the grind size is easy to adjust and extremely uniform, and the output quantity is consistent. I use this for pour over, french press (course), and espresso (fine) grinds, and this machine is easily able to accommodate all three. Conical burr grinders can be a bit challenging to clean, but the parts nicely disassemble to make this chore easier. I found myself cleaning this more often than is necessary at first, as there is very little carryover from one batch of beans to the next. I've also found that the catch tray is slick, as the grounds slide out without much static and it's very easy to clean and replace. I've only owned this a month, so I can't speak to the longevity; but the build quality seems like it should last a while. I'll update this review if something changes.

Good coffee grinder, it is kind of expensive but if you compare with good ones it is kind ok, not bad price for what it does. I am using it for brewed coffee only as my Espresso machine has it own built in grinder. I was using Cuisine art burr grinder prior to this, although it was ok the coffee tastes lot better with this grinder. the quality of grind is much more consistent with this, I felt the coffee not over spill in the box on this unit as compare to my cuisine-art unit which spills coffee everywhere. it has attachment for porta filters for Espresso and could be sued I am not sure the grind is fine enough for espresso, I have not tried it yet maybe I will. it is compact not take whole lot of space on counter, it is very good looking as well built with quality materials.

This coffee grinder works well and has a myriad of grinding sizes that are easy to set. I add the amount of beans that I wish to grind and have the grinding time set to be a second or so more than the grinding requires. Some reviewers have complained about the grinding time being set in 10ths of a second and the time required to set it. Since the time is set with a rotating know rather than a push button I do not have this complaint. In fact, if I just filled the bean hopper and used the grinding time to regulate the amount of coffee ground, I would welcome the ability to set the time in tenths of a second.

The most important aspect of any grinder is its ability to produce grounds where all of the granules are the identical size, for this allows maximum extraction and consistency. Identical granule size is especially critical for making espresso--a high pressure extraction. This grinder does a decent--but not perfect--job at this. There is minor residual flaking at even the finer grinder settings. But we never bought this to do espresso. We have a $2100 Mazzer (commerical grade) for that. We only needed a grinder to do drip and pour-overs, namely Chemex. And for that purpose, it is hard to find a better grinder at this price point. Not only are the grounds near-excellent, but the programmable features seems second-to-none at this price point. LED display shows calibration of grain size (fine to course) and timer settings, et al ... and you can save your settings for next time. And the hopper seals tight and allows you to remove it full of beans without having to empty it first. Very nice. The consumer-level standard is probably the Baratza Vario, which does produce famously perfect grounds day in and out. But we found the Vario temperamental and we tired for fixing it. So, since we already have a commercial grinder dedicated to espresso, we did not need another Baratza Vario. Sure, the Baratza Vario produces superior results, but at over twice the price the difference is negligible. On a scale of 1 to 10 measuring NON-ESPRESSO grinds, if the Baratza Vario is a 10, then the Breville is a solid 7 or 8. And since no one yet can tell a difference in the coffee results between the two, we feel confirmed that--as long as we are only talking about NON-ESPRESSO purposes--we made the correct choice to get this Breville Smart Pro burr grinder.
