I'm sure you've read the same reviews for this over and over so I'll just drop a little interesting information about how this film got made. The screenwriter was a play write who used to work at a car wash and think stories as he worked. He would read history books for fun and came across this specific story as a footnote. Having never heard of James Donovan he looked more into the history of the spy transfer. He wrote the screenplay and shopped it around Hollywood only to find Spielberg's production company showed interest. After pitching the story to a Spielberg underling the writer (Matt Charman) received a phone call from the man himself. Spielberg said he has an actor friend named Tom he wouldn't mind sharing the script with. Tom Hanks signed on and Spielberg, who was about to start another project, put the other project on hold and made Bridge of Spies instead. Pretty neat, huh.

Spielberg may as well have gone full “R” with this deliciously shady spy-swap plot, as the richly re-created period drama — which benefits from a crackling Coen brothers script polish — boasts more courtroom time than it does actual cloak-and-dagger intrigue (in one scene, Hanks’ runny-nose hero literally has his cloak stolen off his back by East German street thugs). While the helmer’s mythmaking approach makes for great Capra-esque entertainment, younger audiences may find it terribly old-fashioned — and they’d be right to think so, although Spielberg would be the first to admit it was his intention to play things classical, resolutely shooting on celluloid, while blending aspects of a tony legal thriller with a hat-tip tribute to the rich, expressionistic look of 1940s film noir.

Averaged a good movie, anticipate a little bit more from the storyline. Tom Hanks was a little removed from the character, which is unusual for him.

Spielberg's Cold War Drama Not to Be Missed

Legendary director Steven Spielberg's latest film "Bridge of Spies" is a welcome history lesson that is still quite relevant to today's society. Tom Hanks plays James Donavan, a successful lawyer in the late 1950s drafted to help defend a recently discovered Soviet Spy (Mark Rylance) and later, after an American pilot is captured in the infamous "U2 Incident," to travel to East Berlin to negotiate a prisoner swap. Donovan tries to uphold the values of the American legal system during a time where Red-Baiting made many fearful to do so, and to pull off a diplomatic coup in a charged environment with two superpowers on the brink of war. Spielberg's direction invokes the great Frank Capra films of the past with the conviction that even one person, armed with reason and moral integrity, can make a difference. In that vein, Hanks channels his inner Jimmy Stewart, and Rylance is terrific as the Soviet spy (pulling off an upset by winning Best Supporting Actor at the recent Oscars). A strong technical presentation and a decent supplement of extras make "Bridge of Spies" well worth owning on Blu-Ray.

    History Lesson?

It seems whenever you combine Spielberg with Hanks, you get a history lesson (at least in one form or another). Which brings us to Bridge of Spies, a cold war thriller that pits negotiations against subtle intrigue. Hanks is put in the role of James Donovan, a Brooklyn lawyer, who is sent by the CIA to negotiate the release of an American U-2 pilot. But there's more to this than meets the eye (of which I can't tell without ruining it for someone who hasn't seen the movie yet). Suffice to say, the movie blends fact with possible fiction (one cannot imagine what the dialogue must've been like in the negotiations process much less what went on behind the scenes). The dialogue bogs down at times (did anyone mention "wordy?"), but the intention is to give us as much historic fact as possible. Hanks can carry on easily in whatever character he's presented as, so it's easy to accept him as the chief negotiator. Still, the movie is one you want to watch just to see what happens next.
