Can't miss with Spielberg and Hanks

The Bridge of Spies, directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Tom Hanks, tells the story of a spy swap between the US and the USSR during the Cold War. Hanks plays an everyman American lawyer recruited by his country to negotiate the swap. The story develops slowly, almost too slowly, but as the movie builds, so does the tension. Spielberg is a master at these types of stories, and Hanks a master at these types of characters. But it's Mark Rylance's Oscar-winning performance as the Soviet spy that captivates. A great story inspired by true events, a great director, and a terrific cast. Don't miss this film!

I purchased this movie in hopes it would be an entertaining movie of the Cold War era. It fully delivered and truly gave me a sense of the “times”. Tom Hanks gave a very believable performance and Mark Rylance was incredible!! I knew some about the Gary Powers incident but this movie brought the whole story together. I highly recommend this film and would purchase it again.

Awesome picture - details are crisp and the blacks are deep and dark, not a dark gray or near black. The stand fits perfectly on a TV console - some models have supports near the edge which may not fit your location - check first. The sound is quite good, although I bought a Bose Cinema 15 for that extra sound kick. Pricey TV, may not be worth it to some, but if you can swing it, you will be VERY pleased.

This is a dramatic thriller that is set against the backdrop of a series of historic events, It tells the story of a real life Brooklyn lawyer, James Donovan, who finds himself in the middle of the Cold War, when the CIA sends him to East Germany, on the impossible mission to negotiate for the release of Francis Gary Powers, the American U-2 pilot who was shot down and captured over the USSR in 1960.

A great movie. Steven Spielberg at his best. Tom Hank's is at the top of his game as an attorney hired to defend a Russian spy and then to help finalize a prisoner swap with the Russian's which also involves the East Germans. Movie is based on real events of the time which most of us alive in the early sixties only new a small portion of. Enjoyed so much I watched it over again the next day.

Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg deliver another great film. It's a story driven spy movie and surprisingly based on a true story. The Blu Ray transfer is top notch highlighting details in skin and clothing. It doesn't feature many colors that pop off the screen but that's how the film was intended. The sounds also is clear and is pleasant to the ears.

I saw this in theaters and was amazed. It pretty accurately depicts the maze of relations between the US, Soviet Union and East Germany at the time. It glosses over the U2 story quite a bit and focuses on the negotiation, but the character portrayal was done very well. You even end up admiring COL Abel, the Soviet spy. Not sure if THAT interaction was accurate, but it enhanced the story.

Bridge of Spies is a fantastic film that gave a lot of insight to the story surrounding Gary Powers and Spielberg and Hanks execute the film flawlessly and give it the depth and breadth the story called for. The picture and audio quality are fantastic and the it has a nice selection of bonus features. If you're a fan of Spielberg, Hanks, or historical dramas/thrillers give this a shot.

This has to be one of Spielberg's finest movies. A great story, well written, well acted and well executed. Tom Hanks has done some wonderful things in the past and he has had a few clinkers too. This ranks as one of his best. Mark Rylance is superb as the captured Russian agent. He won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. It is thrilling and captivating from beginning to end.

Very interesting movie depicting the beginning of the cold war in Europe. Tom Hanks is very good, as always, depicting the lawyer who is tasked to defend an alleged Russian spy for espionage. Mirroring these events is the beginning of the U2 spyplane program to monitor sites in Russia. Speilberg takes an already tense topic and revs it up in this intense political thriller.

Tom Hanks is excellent again in this role of the un-intentioned negotiator in a pivotal but, I fear too easily forgotten period of U.S. history. Quality acting, story telling and characterization of a situation that at the time none of us really knew was a precarious as it really was. Highly recommended as an important history lesson as well as quality entertainment.

I lived through this age and it wasn't easy. About all any of us knew was that there were enough Nukes in the world to destroy the earth about 150 times over. Watching this movie gives a little insight about the tensions and mistrust that took place between the US and the USSR. It's a very interesting movie and Tom Hanks plays the part of a true American hero in it.

    Real Spies

Although we all love the glamour of James Bond or Jason Bourne, this is a real spy story and more realistic of how things are. Brings to mind a more recent spy story albeit mundane where after watching them for years, the US finally deported 10 families that were actually Russian deep cover spies that were to assimilate into upper echelon society and businesses.

I bought this movie because I've had a long-standing interest in American foreign policy and the Cold War along with the U-2 incident at the heart of the film. I found the characters vivid and actually felt bad for Abel as the movie went on. The only problems I had was the perception of the U-2 flight as Powers's first when I know he'd done it for years before being shot down and the confusion over the time element. Otherwise it's another really good Hanks-Spielberg collaboration and a movie to be seen by any history buff.

Tom Hanks pulled off another stunning movie. Parts of the movie seemed to drag on a little bit but this was a great true story. A US soldiers' plane is shot down by Russia during the Cold War. However, the US had a supposed Russian spy. The only way possible to return either if these two is through an exchange. Will it work? Watch and find out!

I had heard from friends that this movie was bad, but if you are like me in the sense that you love true stories and history, then this movie is for you! Everything from the acting to the script to the cinematography are very well done! A great movie with some great behind the scenes stuff on both making of and what happened in the real story!

Recommended movie. Nicely filmed with excellent performances. People younger than 50's most likely won't recall this episode of the Cold War, but as a kid back then, I remember it was a very big deal. Mark Rylance, a brilliant stage actor from the UK isn't so well known here, but we will see more of him after this. Hanks is very good in this role which plays to his strengths (as opposed to DaVinci Code, where he and his co-star of "Amalie" fame were mis-cast IMO) among other problems w/ that film.

More than a history lesson, "Bridge of Spies" is entertaining, suspenseful and eye opening. Tom Hanks plays a dedicated and selfless patriot enlisted to negotiate the release of a U2 Pilot shot down over Russia. I've seen the film three times and have come to appreciate a a self sacrificing civilian who stayed on task despite the politics.

Steven Spielberg's most recent film focuses on a lawyer (played by Tom Hanks) recruited to defend a Soviet spy, and who later must orchestrate a deal to trade his client for captured American pilot Francis Gary Powers (who was shot down in the famous U2 Spy Incident). The film captures the anti-Communist paranoia of the 1950s and the value of diplomacy in attempting to deal with global conflict. Great performances by Hanks and the entire cast. Decent extras round out a very good blu-ray.

This movie was filmed so beautifully. Steven Spielberg does an amazing job affirming a great story and bringing the audience into the film. Tom Hanks and Spielberg make magic again as Hanks stars as James Donovan who is a lawyer caught in a negotiation to bring home a captured American pilot. Definitely worthy of the OSCAR buzz.
