If you like movies about old NY, then this one fits the bill to a "T"!
I thought the director did a great job capturing what NYC and Brooklyn was like back in the day - and the performances were GREAT.
SEE THIS MOVIE.

After becoming a independent person on her own in a different country, she has to choose whether to stay in the US or go back to Ireland, where her mother desperately needs her due to her sister's unexpected death. Brooklyn is the type of movie where is shows that once upon a time every American was an immigrant.

I had already seen this movie twice before at the movies and I still love it after watching it at home. The other two people in our party said that they were too tired to stay up and watch a movie, but once it started, they were with it the whole time. It just pulls you in with the pace, the actors, and the sweet relationships. Now I've cried three times while watching it.

A story about an Irish girl who has personal choices to make that is well acted and believable. My wife and I really enjoyed this movie and have watched it many times. There are moments that will make you smile and laugh and others that might bring a tear to your eye but at the end leaves you feeling good. A very good movie to put in your library.

I can easily understand why this movie got Oscar nominations, including for Best Actress. It's the story of a young Irish woman seeking a better life in America around 1950, while struggling with home sickness. As simple as that sounds, the details, and the acting make for a very compelling drama and romance. The dvd quality is excellent.

I am of Irish descent but had no idea of the hardships faced even into the 1950s, economically in Ireland and the difficulty in attaining the hope of a better life in America. This is a beautiful and at times heartbreaking movie, incredibly uplifting as the heroine faces the conflict between her heritage and her new life in America.

"Brooklyn" is a fine movie, following all the classic beats that we've grown to love about the most timeless love stories. "Brooklyn" will join the ranks of those timeless stories in the coming years. It's a joyful and heart aching film that stands as one of the year's best, and a sure-fire contender for several nominationes......"

This movie was unknown to me. I read some reviews and took a chance. It deals with the courage to venture to a new world and new experiences for a young Irish girl. It explored how someone can yearn for their old home and ties and yet know what America can offer in hopes and dreams. this movie is a little gem.

This was a movie that I wasn't sure about going into it. The reviews on IMDB and Google were pretty good so we decided to buy it. It wasn't what I had expected, but it gives a good glimpse into what it would have been like to immigrate to America. I think that it was a good movie and my wife enjoyed it as well.

I probably enjoyed this movie largely because of the actress who portrayed the main character. It was just an okay movie though as the characters didn't change a whole lot from beginning to end. I expected more of a story line than I got. Even still, the scenes were okay taken by themselves. There could have been more character development.

A very simple story about a young girl moving to Brooklyn right before World War Two. She is very lonely and has a hard time adjusting until she meets a young Italian. They fall in love and everything is fine until she has to return to to Ireland when her mother dies. She must then choose between the two countries.

Between Ireland and Brooklyn, the cinematography is great - and the Irish actress is first-rate. Drama, humor and romance wind up this period piece of history into a growing-up tale against a backdrop of novel proportions. The regular DVD had all the qualities of blu-ray without the extra cost

Beautifully made and filmed movie. Good story, as well. A young lady immigrated to New York, and later met a boy – but something happened at home and she had to return temporarily – and there was her old boyfriend. Which one does she choose?

I loved this movie. As an immigrant who also happens to be Irish I could relate to all of the emotions she felt, homesick - getting the death in the family call. I loved the funny talk around the table of the home she resided in. All immigrants can relate to the subject matter of this movie. Worth a view.

To be honest I only bought this movie because it was cheap and had decent reviews. I wasn't familiar with any of the actors but the story and the acting was fantastic. Kind of reminded me of the Tom Cruise/Nicole Kidman movie Far and Away.

I really enjoyed this film and wanted to own it for viewing on a rainy day. Haven't read the book yet but found the film version highly entertaining and well performed. Reminded me of moving far away from my family when I was only 18, and making my life on my own.

Saoirse Ronan, who became known for "Atonement," is far from a household name, but her lead performance in "Brooklyn" raises a small but sweet movie into one that is a must-see for film lovers. The conflict between her character's love for her Irish homeland and her assimilation into America by way of Brooklyn is all the more real and touching thanks to Ms Ronan brilliant performance.

Now in days the film-market is over saturated with "love" stories. So much so that many are not given the light of day and are forgotten. I can't believe that I allowed Brooklyn to avoid my radar for so long. Visually it is amazing. A wonderful period piece about finding oneself and falling in love.
