As a fan of metal I really wanted to enjoy this game. However, it just wasn't my cup of tea. The gameplay is fairly bland and uninspired, and the difficulty is too easy even on the hardest game mode. However, the voice acting is good and the characters are interesting.

Double Fine is a fantastic studio, and this game is another one of their successes. It's an action-adventure game with a lot of character, and it's definitely worth picking up.

The fun you get from playing any Double Fine game is all packed in this game...exactly what you would expect from DF...if you've played any Tim Schafer games, you'll be right at home!!

Solid with a bad twist

For about half of the game, this is a great metal Zelda-style game. Then the big twist turns it into more of a third-person RTS where you're controlling groups of soldiers to fight for you and it loses some of the coolest parts of the experience.

So cheap now that it's well worth the price. The game is so much fun but it gets a little crazy around the time when you have to do tower defense stuff. The game is just different and a good mix of humor, action, and awesomeness.

A Loving Tribute to Metal

Tim Schafer is the creator of such classic titles as The Secret of Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle, Grim Fandango, and Psychonauts, so when you he releases a new game, you better listen up. Brutal Legend is his tribute to Heavy Metal music, which he developed an ear for after getting the album Dairy of a Madman by Ozzy Osbourne when he was teenager. After studying the epic lyrics, amazing album art, and the thunderous sound metal had to offer, it's no surprise that he decided to make a game based on the greatest form of music.
The story is as epic as any metal album from the 80's could get, with Tim Schafer humor healthily spread over it like crunchy peanut butter. Eddy Riggs is the best roady in the business, except the band he is with right now is a buch of whiny emo kids who think they know how to play metal. He is involved in an onstage accident and some of his blood drips into his belt buckle, a remnant from another world, which transports to a world of metal. The world is like a living metal album cover, filled with bones, chains, thunder storms, demons, and epic structures. From here the story of saving a land and getting it's people in touch with the metal that surrounds them begins.
Brutal Legend is a healthy mix of many different game styles. Incorporating action adventure, open world, racing, and real time strategy elements, it is probably unlike anything you have played. While the single player is a little on the short side, although there are multiple side quests, there is a robust and fun multi-player game as well, in which you need to overtake the other players stage with your army of head-bangers, demons, groupies, and your own axe.
The graphics are top notch. Very stylized and cartoon like, but in an Adult Swim kind of way. The music selection is amazing as well. Over 100 tracks from the original artists spanning the gambit of metal. Iced Earth, Manowar, Judas Priest, Dragonforce, Accept, Megadeth and many others are featured in the epic song list. Voice overs from Jack Black, Rob Halford, Ozzy, Lemmy, and Lita Ford are delivered with all of their character and charm, and the dialogue is crafted with comedic writing rarely seen in games.
If you love metal and and can't stand the way music has become today, then buy this game right now. You will enjoy it to it's fullest. For everyone else, hopefully this game will actually give you a better taste in music, lest you be doomed to live in a world full of redundant rhythms, lame licks and wussy lyrics.

Excellent Underrated Game

This game blends strategy and action in a rich environment. It is mission-based in an open world. There were some frustrating moments driving off cliffs because of bad camera angles, but other than that I have nothing negative to say. The humor is refreshing. This game is definitely for adults although you can disable profanity and gore if you desire (this would probably take away from your gaming experience). You don't have to be a metal fan to enjoy this game but it helps. I am personally tired of button-mashing action games. I am also bored to death of collecting randomly placed orbs and such in open world games. While this game contains a fair bit of button-mashing and it does contain some collectibles, I did not find it as tedious as many games I have played within the last couple years. Playing this game was without a doubt this is a 5-star overall experience.

Great, fun game, bad for achievements.

The storyline of this game was very entertaining and I really got drawn in. The voice acting was humorous and really kept me interested in the characters and what was happening next. The gameplay was fun, simple, yet also brought it's own challenges (at least on the highest difficulty). The ending of the story was good, and overall it's a really fun game. However, if you're looking for easy achievements, look elsewhere. This game will take a solid 25 hours to 100%, and you'll need multiplayer and DLC to get it all. The collectibles are also very frustrating.
Bottom line: You're either going to HATE this game, or really enjoy it. It's a brief game (about 8-10 hours if you don't mess around with collectibles, and even shorter if you forgo the side missions) that should entertain most people pretty well.
Also, there is an option to keep foul language in or OUT of the game, as well as violence. It's in the very beginning of the game, so if you're buying this for a child, just watch the first part of the game and make those TWO choices for them (they are separate choices).
