Great camera for hobbyist photo and video

I bought this camera as an upgrade from my 2 year old Canon t3. I wanted something that would take great stills, but also be able to capture video without going all the way for a full-frame. After using it for a few weeks, this camera has yet to disappoint. Here are some of the highlights for me so far. Feel free to check out more images taken on this camera on my flickr here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/51924711@N07/ Pros: - Live view dual pixel AF: everything you may have read about this feature is true. The subject tracking, even in low contrast situations, is great and makes it very easy to maintain focus on moving subjects. Combine this with the touch screen to easily switch focus points and you have a home run. - Touch screen: speaking of that touch screen, I have to say I was originally not sold and considered the feature to be gimmicky at best. Boy was I wrong. The screen is very vibrant and makes changing settings on the fly that much easier. The articulating feature is very nice for those times when you want to shoot very low or over a crown and would rather not guess as to your aim.

    FROM A 40D TO A 70D = BIG JUMP

I MOVED FROM 40D TO 70D FOR THE TILT SCREEN AND MOVIE MODE. WENT WITH A BODY ONLY AS I ALREADY HAD GREAT CANON LENS. FOR ME THE LEARNING CURVE HAS AND IS HARD TO LEARN. IT IS A LOT MORE CAMERA IN ALL ASPECTS THAN MY 40D WAS, THE MORE I USE IT THE MORE I LIKE IT. AND I HAVE NOT EVEN GOTTEN IN TO THE HDR YET. FOR THE CAMERA IT IS, THE MANUAL IS A JOKE. IT IS A COMPLEX CAMERA TO FIGURE OUT. I AM SOLO WITHOUT ANY ONE TO HELP WITH TRYING TO SORT ALL THE FEATURES AND HOW TO ACESS THEM. THE ARSNEL FROM ABOUT 1974 T50, T90, 2 X AE1, AE1 PROGRAM, S5IS, A2000, A4000, SX40, 2X 40D, AND NOW 70D. 40 YEARS COAST TO COAST AND 2 MALFUNCITIONS AND CANON WAS FAST TO THE RESCUE. I THINK THAT IS PRETTY GOOD SO I WILL STICK WITH MY CANON.

I've had this camera for 2 months now, and I love it. I upgraded from a starter from the rebel series. The performance is consistent and excellent. It does great in low light, which was my primary reason for getting a better body. The controls and menus are easy to maneuver. I don't LOVE the flip screen, but I don't hate it either.

    Incredible Evolution of the series

As an owner of the Canon 60D (I actually wrote the featured review of that camera on this site), when Canon announced the 70D it checked every single box for an upgrade for me. It has a new sensor, 19 point all cross type phase autofocus when using the view finder, faster frames per second, a touch screen, wifi, and the most advanced video autofocus ever put into a DSLR to date. First off, the sensor. It is a 20.2mp sensor with a new system Canon is calling Dual Pixel AF - what does that mean for you? It means that all of those pixels are actually split into two independent receptors that the camera uses to determine if the pixel is in focus or not using the same principles of light that the phase detect system through the viewfinder uses. This means that when using liveview and video that the camera locks focus on your subject and stays locked on as you or the subject move. With the touch screen, you can tap on the object you want the camera to follow during video and it will track that object with pretty good accuracy, even tracking kids running around. For stills, you can enable the touch shutter and just tap on what you want the subject to be, and the camera will instantly focus there and take the shot. It can also do autofocus down to f/11 - a huge advantage if you are using a slower lens and a teleconverter to get more reach. No longer do I need to haul around a camcorder or another camera to get autofocus during video, this one does it and does it extremely well. For best AF performance during video you should have an STM lens. For stills, I still find that nothing beats the control and flexibility of the viewfinder on a DSLR, and the 70D does not disappoint there either. The viewfinder is nice and bright, although not quite as big as the 4 year old (and still more expensive) 7D and it does not display the entire frame, instead only showing 98%, which is still more than enough and an improvement over the 60D's 96%. The two big features here are the intelligent viewfinder and the 19 point all cross type AF system. The 70D has an intelligent viewfinder that only displays the active focus point, your metering area when using spot metering, your focus area when using all points or zone, grids can be optionally turned on or off, and one of the best features (that even the 7D lacks) is a full time horizontal level so you always know exactly where level is when taking a shot. This combined with an advanced (and customizable) focus tracking engine means excellent focus performance when tracking moving objects, as well as much more flexibility than the 60D offers on where the subject is in the frame and where you set the focus point. Other features: The wifi is actually very useful, allowing for wireless transfers of images to your PC with the included software, or direct uploads to several web services. The other really cool feature is the ability to remotely control the camera using an Android or iOS device - the camera can even become its own hotspot, allowing for remote control even when out and away from more traditional wifi. The touchscreen makes using the menus a breeze, which is also important for entering text like the passphrase for a wireless network, no need to hunt and select single characters with a mess of key presses. The touchscreen is also integrated very well for liveview and video shooting. The screen itself is articulated, which, when combined with the touch focus and shutter options, allows for very effective use of the camera at odd shooting angles. Ergonomically, the 70D is a step up from the Rebel series with dual control wheels, a top LCD, and more direct access buttons for controlling settings. Finally, image quality. The 70D has the best image quality of all of the Canon APS-C cameras, especially when shooting jpeg as the Digic5+ does a great job of cleaning up noise. ISO 6400 is perfectly useable, and even 12,800 looks good. It can also fire away at up to 7 frames per second, which is great for action shooting. The new sensor and processor combination leads to a camera that is excellent at being a camera..and a lot more. Overall, the 70D is just a really great camera. It does so many things and does them all well. You really can't go wrong with one.

    Truly An Awesome Camera

I recently purchased this 70D camera as an upgrade from a Canon 30D mainly for the 20+ megapixels because the pictures were being displayed on large screen from video projector. Cropping the pictures or zooming in took away some of the clarity with the smaller megapixel camera on such a large screen. Main use is for sports photography. For indoor (basketball) I use a Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 IS II and for outdoor (soccer) I use a Canon 100-400mm f/4 IS. Very fast focus and with 7fps if your camera is pointed in the right direction you won't miss the action. Great video from this camera. Being able to control the focus from the touch screen is an added bonus. I took some video of my daughter shooting her bow. Being able to focus on her and just touching the screen and switch focus to the target with the arrow sticking out without moving the camera is awesome. Although I have not used the wifi yet it is there if and when I need to control camera from phone or tablet. This camera is exactly what I was looking for to up my creativity level a couple of notches.

Background info on my experience/use: semi pro portrait/event photographer, professional landscape photographer. Cameras past and present: canon 5D mark III, Canon 7D (owned currently), Leica M3 35mm film, Canon 60D, And Canon t3i The nitty gritty on this camera after a week of use: Build/functionality- Its a solid update to the popular 60d dslr. Smaller profile than its predecessor however the grip and feel of the camera still remains solid. And much more girth than its younger siblings in the Rebel series. The redesign of button locations on the rear of the camera make for a fluid interface to the menus screens while maintaining the appeal that higher quality SLRs have had with dedicate Aperature and Shutter speed wheels. The added perk of the New touch screen technology from the T4i and T5i have greatly improved the speed to many obscure functions sometimes needed in the depths of software. Its actually pretty fantastic to say the least. Photo Quality- With the addition of the newer Digic 5+ processor the picture quality is only gradually enhanced from the previous Digic 4 of the older generations and 60D. What you will notice a difference in is the rate at which photos can be shot and processed. 7 fps puts this camera closer to the 7D in respects of action photography. I did have high hopes for better low light photos with a new processor since the 60D essentially used a 4 year old unit but unfortunately they look almost identical. It seems you will need to step into a full frame like the 6d or the 5D mark ii & iii to get a substantial difference in quality above 1600 ISO that only a larger sensor can provide. Video Quality- What really sets this camera apart from the rest of the line up(except the 5D mark III) is its incredible ability to process video (and with touch screen focus!!!) Its active autofocus tracks well with lenses. Multiple modes allow you to change focus settings quickly thru simple strokes on the screen. This camera has built in stereo recording unlike the mono of the 60D. It does however lack a good amount of creative features within the camera for video recording. But lets me honest, most of us who do photography and cinematography often do all of our editing from computer software outside of the camera ie lightroom/photoshop etc. With the STM lenses its fairly quick in its focusing and extremely quiet since they were design specifically for camera bodies like the 70D, t4i, and t5i in a video application. Most of my lenses are USM or L series which make for much quicker focusing than even the STM but do sacrifice a bit of more noise (still much better than the cheap kit lens tho). Overall this camera is a solid performer. It is a jack of all trades. Photos to video, it does a dang decent job on it all with a big emphasis on the video side of things. In short. If you need an all around camera this is it. If you need a camera for only still photography you may be better off buying a 7D or full frame camera for the money even tho it does do a "pretty good" job much like the original 60D. Either way you cant lose. I promise.

Solid build. Clicks like a dream. Viewfinder paradise. 10/10 would buy again. Very comfortable touch screen, pinch zoom, sturdy buttons, I would highly recommend this to any advancing photo enthusiast. I have a sport Sigma 150-600mm which is VERY sharp, and I also purchased the 50mm f1.8 which is very sharp in almost any lighting. I love the fact that it cleans the sensor after each usage, and I love how heavy it feels. It's not actually heavy, only 1.66lbs, but it makes you feel like it's built well. The camera has a wireless commander as well, it'll let you take pictures from your phone if you're into that, I was experimenting with it while out at Nisqually Refuge, but the response wasn't quick enough for my liking, maybe for family portraits or something. ISO range is pretty incredible, up to 12800 (without boost) if you like grainy pictures I guess.. Battery life is also very good, around 850-950 photos depending on what kind of format you're taking them in, and it takes shots at 7fps. I'd say I'm a happy buyer.

After seven years of fighting a 40D for my personal photos, getting focused pictures was a chore. The 70D is a breath of fresh air, I haven't missed a shot yet, prefect focus every time. The image quality is also improved, along with the back screen. I've decided I like the touch screen. The added video abilities is a wonderful addition. My boss was so impressed with it, he asked me to record a marketing video with it and it came out perfect. The articulating rear screen was not a selling point for me, after using it, I put it in a must have category for my next camera. There are so many features on this camera, I felt it necessary to buy an after market book to learn as much as possible. Things I don't care for are, the short battery life, lose of the magnesium casing and the 98% viewfinder. The 70D has more features then I'll ever use, I shoot in manual 95% of the time but its nice to have them if I'm feeling adventures. This is a fantastic camera and makes wonderful photos.

I got this camera to replace my t2i and compared its night and day the 70d is fast. I used the wifi to take a picture and every one was how did you do that with your cell phone. they where amazed. I like how fast it keeps focus and stays on a subject. I will tell everyone to choose this over the old 7d I did so much research before I bought this camera Its nice as its fast there is nothing bad I would say about it. The new 70D is a game changer Period!!

After months or research and playing around with the cameras of my friends, I decided to purchase the Canon 70D and have yet to find anything to complain about during the 6 months I have now owned it. As my first DSLR, I am extremely satisfied not only with the physical quality of this camera, but also with the amazing features it offers to shoot in any condition I've yet to throw at it. From priority settings and the camera's phenomenal sensor, to its impressive video quality and the wi-fi data transfer, I would recommend the 70D to any novice / intermediate photographer looking to take awesome photos and willing to invest the money. Are there more affordable options on the market that will allow you to take satisfactory photos, absolutely, and with the use of Photoshop, photos can be transformed into anything your heart desires. The 70D however, will not only eliminate the amount of time spent post processing photos, especially when shooting sets where lighting and consistent quality are paramount, but it will also provide images that when processed correctly to be printed in larger formats without any reservations or disappointment.
