I really underestimated this movie. I was not inclined to rent it, but I'm glad I did. The acting was superb; Hanks definitely gave an Oscar worthy performance, and the pirate captain was very convincing in his mixed emotions as things didn't go as planned. The script was riveting, leaving me at the edge of my seat the entire time. Apparently, some of those who gave the movie only one star due to their perception of a ridiculous premise -- an unarmed crew with the captain shooting flares at the pirates -- don't realize the movie was based on actual events, that this was how the captain tried to defend his ship. I also liked the fact that the piracy of an impoverished nation stemmed largely from the fact that fishing conglomerates had wiped out the fishing industry of Somalia, an important reminder of the damage our industries often impose on the economies of other countries. Would I recommend this movie? Absolutely, a truly worthy movie in terms of thought provoking as well as edge-of-your seat excitement in my opinion.

This is an awesome movie. Parents should be cautioned however as it deals within intense adult themes that show both the ugly and the wonderful sides of humanity. Themes of courage, desperation, compassion, perseverance, good and evil all STRONGLY portrayed. Not for the faint of heart and young in years. The pirate characters were portrayed very well and appreciate that towards the end we were given insight into their motives. Not excuses mind you, just motives. This is not fantasy. It is a portrayal of real events and that should not be lost on the viewer. The intensity was likely even more so in real life. Hard to imagine the pressure for all involved.

“Captain Philips” is a riveting, real life drama. It portrays actual events when Somali pirates commandeered an American cargo ship a few years ago. The movie is well paced and commands the viewer’s attention from start to finish. As usual, Tom Hanks does a brilliant job in the lead role. He is especially good in the last five minutes of the movie – I won’t say much more for fear of revealing information for those who have not seen the movie. Special mention must also be made of Barkhad Abadi – a Somali Immigrant to the U.S. – acting in his first role. He plays “Muse” – the lead pirate, and is perfect for the role. I highly recommend the film.

Nice movie. Saw the movie along with my office colleague's in theaters and liked it. As my baby was 10 months old at that time, planned to buy a blu ray copy for my wife to watch at home.. Monitoring the price since it's blu ray release and best buy dropped it to reasonable amount (<$15) in early march. Bought it immediately burning some reward certificate. Reg blu ray - it has blu ray, DVD copy and uv. Blu ray quality is good. Region A, its not a big deal for most, but if anybody wants to take out of US, you might want to buy the respective region. Worth to keep it in your blu ray collections.

A pulse-pounding thriller, Captain Phillips is an reenactment of the 2009 hijacking of the U.S. container ship Maersk Alabama by a crew of Somali pirates. It was directed by Paul Greengrass. The movie centers on the relationship between the Alabama's commanding officer, Captain Richard Phillips (played by two time Academy Award®-winner Tom Hanks), and the Somali pirate captain, Muse (played by Barkhad Abdi), who takes him hostage. This film will have you sitting on the edge of your seat.

This is a great movie that I really enjoyed. I love movies based on true events and this movie did not disappoint. The movie was interesting and helped me image what I might feel if I was on that boat with them. The fact the film was shot on the ship made it feel real as if I was watching the actual events. The acting was great and film crew did a great job getting the action sequences. If you pick up the Blu ray with the bonus features, it really compliments the movie.

very interesting film, shows what it takes to be a container ship captain and crew. the drills they go thru just to be prepared for hijackings. the only means of defense they have is water cannons and one small escape pod that is basically for captain of the ship. the movie also shows how capable our military is of rescuing people from harm out on open seas. the emotional feeling that captain Philips went thru during this time and his courage to go back to work is awesome.

A great performance by both the great Tom Hanks and Barkhad Abdi, who certainly gained notoriety from this film. If you are a fan of marine-related thrillers, you won't be disappointed. The film was a big critical and commercial success, having been nominated for over 5 Academy Awards.

Fantastic Movie even though you know the ending it still keeps up suspense for the whole Movie. Tom Hanks incredible definitely deserved an Oscar Nomination! Somalian Terrorist also fantastic! Great job by the ships crew too. Very Authentic, shot at sea real Container Ship and Navy ships and crews. Extras on the disc also great. Have already watched it multiple times.

Fantastic movie portrayal of the historical kidnapping of Captain Philips by pirates. Steelbook is adequate but the printing looks cheap, with faded colors. Art choice on the front and back covers works well enough but the inside art is more of the same, missing an opportunity for more inspiring art which could have elevated this into a collector's centerpiece.

I saw this on tv, and knew it was one I'd want to own. It includes the Blu-ray, DVD, and digital copy. Starring one of my favorite actors, Tom Hanks, and based on a true story, Captain Phillips tells the gripping tale of the 2009 hijacking of a U.S. container ship and the crew's struggle to survive. Highly Recommended for Tom Hank's and Barkhad Abdi's performances alone!

This film tells the true story of commercial shipping Captain Phillips and how his ship was boarded by desperate Somali pirates. The courage and resourcefulness of Captain Phillips is wonderful to watch, especially more so thanks to Tom Hanks's brilliant performance. Although some of the plot developments don't ring true, you'll still want to watch this gripping tale of modern-day piracy on the high seas.

A movie that delivers intense action, suspense, drama, and will keep you glued to your seat, yet does not require the typical dosage of Hollywood violence. Interesting how the movie portrays all the pirates as driven by circumstance, and loved the Director's decision to use born in Somalia Somalis to play the pirates. Barkhad Abdi should win Best Supporting Actor at the Oscars.

This film provides a good opportunity to use the word "harrowing!" The mostly true story of how the captain of of a commercial vessel went beyond the norms of his profession, putting himself at great risk of death to protect his crew from modern-day Somali pirates. Quiet, matter-of-fact heroics by the US Navy seals are understated, which is appropriate for these amazing, dedicated professionals.

I think that this one of my many favorite historical films of all-time. I had decided to see this film because I had never read or knew about this hostage crisis incident. This was a very suspenseful, exciting, entertaining and enjoyable film with a great and amazing plot, storyline and cast including a lot of action, mystery and suspense as well.
