Memories of S. Africa...
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I watched this movie some time after it came out in theaters and on dvd but I must say it was well worth the wait. I traveled to South Africa the summer before the movie was released so it was a welcome surprise traveling there again through film. Likewise, to listen to the characters speak Zulu was also great! That was the purpose of my travels to South Africa. Nevertheless, I think what I enjoyed about the movie was that it was not so Hollywood that it lost its historical relevance. Derek Luke was very good in it and seems to be on track to have a great acting career following Antwone Fisher. I even think that it was worthy of at least a Golden Globe or Oscar nod. And also, the movie chronicled an expanse of time that you were unaware of which also allowed the movie to move fluidly while not being encumbered by showing day-to-day occurrences but rather historic moment-to-historic moment ones. The only down side to the film and it is not really a down side is that Tim Robbins continues playing kind of dark characters. He is good in the movie though Luke definitively takes the center due to his role and acting but after Mystic River, Robbins has played another dark role. Outside of that, and again Robbins was good, I enjoyed the film and I think it definitely showcases works in patience and forgiveness while remaining under and further subjugating oppression.
