Compact dash cam that gets the job done
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Summary: Set it and forget it, that’s where the Cobra SC 120 shines as a dash cam with a decent camera and storage options. If you are looking for a more hand’s one experience with bells and whistles (like a built-in screen), there are other more expensive units out there. Comes with an App for fine tuning and works with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Pro’s: - Compact, unobtrusive design. - Easy to install. - Good 1440P video resolution. Con’s: - So so wireless connectivity. Matter of Taste: - The App could use some work. - Ultra-wide camera with a ‘fishbowl’ output. - Do it yourself installation. - Can’t connect with CarPlay (or Auto) and the included App at the same time. - Your CarPlay has a larger user group for road alert functions. More Words: Some dash cams have so many options and frills they almost double as an entertainment system, but the actual picture is no better than what the Cobra SC 120 can provide. It is a competent camera that is so small that it won’t distract you. The lens is ultra-wide, which has pluses and minuses. On the plus side, you record a lot of the action around you, on the bad side, things will seem further away with less detail than you might remember it. The fishbowl effect is so prominent you won’t be using the footage as home movies but it’s insurance in case of a negative road experience. The App, well, make sure it’s up to date and the firmware is the most recent, and that means connecting inside to a strong WIFI source first. It does connect with your phone, to adjust settings and presumably download footage. I found it faster and easier to just use the included micro SD card (16 Gb) with a card reader. It’s a revolving loop, erases the oldest footage, so you will probably want to upgrade to a 256 card for long trips. Bottom line is if you want a dash cam that is just a dash cam (records usable footage), this is a good price for a compact unit.

Wish I had made another selection

Looking at videos is a pain and there are chimes that seem to be meaningless. When I tried to use with Apple CarPlay I get an error message that it cannot be done.

This can be achieved either through the CLA port, which must provide constant power, or by purchasing an optional hardwire kit that supplies continuous power to the camera and enables Parking Mode features. Additionally, pairing the SC 120 with our Drive Smarter app via Bluetooth makes it easy to access your camera settings and view video recordings. Bought the OBD2 port connection and no matter what setting i did. The camera would either record constantly while off or when i set to parking mode, it would stay in parking mode while driving and every bump would set it off like it was being hit and the SD card filled up on one 20 minute drive. I tried changing all the settings and nothing worked right. The App is terrible and it took multiple times to connect to the camera every time. Will be returning and trying another brand.

The SC 120 starts loop recording immediately when powered on. As the SD card becomes full, the oldest footage is automatically erased to make space for new recordings. You can save loop recordings and emergency videos in clips of 1, 2, or 3 minutes, depending on your preference. Please note that smaller 1-minute files are easier to transfer to your phone and share. Emergency recordings are locked and will not be overwritten.
You also have the option to adjust the G-Sensor sensitivity between levels 1 and 3, or to turn it off completely. Level 1 makes it easiest to activate the G-Sensor, while Level 3 only locks videos in the event of the most severe impacts.
The SC120 comes with a 16GB SD card but is compatible with Class 10 or U1 high-endurance cards up to 256GB. Our OBD-II power cords are designed to work with the industry-standard On-Board Diagnostics II port found in most vehicles and most customers have success, however, there can be occasional compatibility issues with specific vehicles.
Regarding the Drive Smarter app, if you are having trouble connecting, please ensure that you are using the latest version of the app and have granted all requested permissions. Garbage - find a different solution.

I have countless hours me walking around in my garage BUT no actual driving events. I bought this to record classic car runs in my classic car; and it recorded NONE of the driving, only stops at lights, and random "quick videos" that are 1 pic/second showing nothing of interest. One video has 10 minutes of my garage - no movement, no sound. lol. Save you money - do not buy this.
