Cosmos, Updated and more

Neil deGrasse Tyson was the perfect choice for the host of this updated and revised series. 30 years ago Carl Sagan created and hosted the first broadcasts of what became one of the most beloved and remembered television series. Sagan explained the science of astronomy and the wonders of the universe to us all. He satisfied our intellect and piqued our curiosity. But Cosmos was not only about outer space. Sagan taught us about the Earth as well, about the balance of nature and the fragility of our planet.
In 2014 Neil deGrasse Tyson re-examined the lessons from Sagan and offered what has been learned in the generation passing between the two series. He expands on Sagan's lessons and gives us precise insightful commentaries on biology, evolution, the development of several species, and the origin of our planet.
Tyson looks back on the life and times of various scientists using animations. We learn why they challenged the beliefs of their day and often suffered for it. We learn the value of understanding and education from these look backs.
Neil deGrasse Tyson does as Carl Sagan did before him, he piques our curiosity to open our minds. You will get the sense that Both men believe that science benefits us all.

Those who have seen the original Cosmos need not fear that it has been diminished by its successor. The new series is an homage to the old, while bringing updated information not available to Sagan. Sagan's name is invoked several times, each time in a powerfully emotional way. The visuals are great, and even as a dedicated science layperson, there was always something new to learn from the videos. Still working my way through the extras, but I already feel I have gotten more than my money's worth.
Fair warning to creationists and fundamentalists who see science as opposed to your beliefs. Tyson is polite, but firm, in his advocacy of science and scientific method, and does not back away from stating beliefs like a young earth are silly wrong.

I went to high school with John Green, nephew of Carl Sagan, and he helped introduce me to his uncle's amazing world of scientific discovery. Although I never actually got to meet the man himself, Sagan made science fun and exciting through his many books and the much beloved television series, Cosmos: A Personal Voyage. The new show is a great continuation of his grand tradition of bringing the joy of scientific endeavor to the general public, regardless of your current educational background, by appealing to the innate curiosity of the universe that lies within each of us.

Although the creator and narrator of this series has his own strong views of how human civilization should act, on Earth and in space, the knowledge and explanatory sessions presented in this series make it well worth watching -- even more than once! Astronomy, evolution, history of science and more, all brilliantly conveyed.

This has quickly become one of my favorite DVD series. It explains a great deal about the universe and some of the groundbreaking scientists throughout history. I hadn't heard much about Michael Faraday, Annie Cannon, Pat Patterson and others, but they are fascinating and their stories are well told. The series is well produced, well referenced and the animation is very good. You can't go wrong with this.

This is an incredible remake of Carl Sagan's orginal series. Neil DeGrass Tyson is brilliant and breaks complex thoughts down into bite size pieces. Watch in HD if possible, brilliant images. Oh, and if you think the earth is only 6000 years old this will be a real eye opener for you.

As a huge fan of Carl Sagan's Cosmos, I was a little skeptical about the Todd McFarlane / Neil DeGrasse Tyson reboot (?) mini-series, but it does a really good job of taking what was so great about the original and including what we've learned since then.
If you're going to buy this and have a Blu-ray player, pick up that one - I bought this for my girlfriend so she could watch it anywhere.

This is the best documentary ever made regarding ANY subject. Dr. Tyson has the most amazingly awesome way of presenting complex scientific thesis and ideas in a way that my 6 year old niece understands. My old man and I have watched this documentary three times, once on TV and twice on this DVD and we learn new stuff EVERY TIME. I do not just recommend this... it's a MUST HAVE!!!

Had been wanting to purchase this product for a while but the price has stayed pretty constant at $39.99, well that all changed when it dropped to $24.99, and not only that I had a $5 reward to use so I got what I wanted for the affordable price of $19.99 plus tax! have yet to watch as I am waiting for some supplemental materials from Answers in Genesis to come in to use as a Creation/Evolution study.

This is an attempt to expand the old series by the late Carl Sagan from decades ago. While there is much good Science History in it, there is also (a) wild speculation about black holes, (b) 4th-grade level cartoons in which characters curse for no reason, and (c) a host who can't quite get over himself, and the CGI effects at his command. He feels the need to denigrate figures who resisted Science, but what does that add to understanding? Rather than having Science education as a goal, it is loaded with preaching, some of it more speculative than any religion ever had. If they could have stayed with the facts, this could have been a masterpiece; as it is, the host is concerned for his own glory.

I enjoyed the original television series when I was a child. The new series is bigger and better. It takes a look at life and its development on all levels. It postulates through scientific theory the possibilities that are before us. Amazing work that makes you really think.

This series is a wonderful exploration of the Cosmos. I was so glad to see this series of programs again after seeing it many years ago, it is really timeless. Carl Sagan is remarkable and such an inspiration to those of us that believe science is real.

I loved the actual broadcast, and had made dvd type copies. However, the actual DVD product is more convenient to use, and the graphics appear better than the broadcast. I think about the series from time to time, and have watched most of it again on DVD.

Excellent visual effects and incredible clarity. A fantastic up-date from Carl Sagan's first Cosmos. The clock of time concept really created a timeline that made sense and helped see and understand the life of planet earth.
