So far my Favorite CD of 2009

I think that this Cd has to be one of the best records ever written in Metal today. I mean it starts off with a 5 minute track Oblivion which starts off with a acoustic intro and comes in with Brann mind blowing singing. Than Divinations has to be my favorite song just because of catchy chorus and awesome Guitar solo. Quintessence is a very doomy, melodic Prog song typical my mastodon, nice to listen to. The Czar is amazing with its 10 minute song which i enjoy a lot. Stats off slow and than picks up the way any band should pick a sound up, than with a rocking Guitar solo. Than the Ghost of Karelia has very interesting vocals that keep you wanting to listen over and over. Than Crack the Skye is just something that keeps you listening with its acoustiv intro picking up with its heavy vocals, probably in my eyes the heaviest song on the album. Than one of my favorites the The Last baron has everything from clean to heavy to prog to anything else you can think of that mastodon has done so far. Best part of the song would have to be Brendan singing in that song, just amazing. By the Cd i promise you wont be disappointed.

    Absolutely Stunning

This is easily Mastodon's most focus work to date. It is a 7 song epic about astral travel, Czars and a paraplegic. Without a doubt it will be 2009's Metal Album of the Year and should be considered for Best Album of the Year regardless of class. Songs such as Oblivion and Divinations would be the best tracks of most other metal albums, but The Czar and The Last Baron, take the cake on this one. Both tracks clock in at over nine and thirteen minutes and are nothing short of epic. Troy's vocals and bass playing are as on point as ever, Brann is simply a beast behind the kit and Brent and Bill are mindblowing on guitar. I didn't think that Leviathan would be topped, and while Blood Mountain was close, it didn't top it, but Crack the Skye absolutely does. If you consider yourself a true fan of metal, prog rock or even rock in general, this is an absolute must.

Mastodon changes things up a bit this time

Mastodon does it again by leaving the listener in awe of the bands music abilities. This cd is more straightforward the the other releases. The music has a lot more 'airiness' to it which flies in the face of Mastodons early work of hyper tech metal all the way through. A concept album involving astral travel & Rasputin , this cd made me scratch my head at first but I've warmed up to it more after each listen. The dvd almost made me think of "Some kind of Mastodon" to borrow from metallica. Very personal stuff involving Brann & the death of his sister, Brett and the mebers of SOAD beating him to the point of near death and a coma & things like that. If you are a fan of interesting and ever changing metal riffs I highly suggest checking this one out.

I listened to this on Mastodon's myspace and it is simply their best work to date IMO. I love how they are singing on this album because Troy, Brent and Brann all have great voices. The music on this album is just phenomenal. This is a must for any Mastodon fan.
