Outstanding Gothic Tale......

When her heart is stolen by a seductive stranger, a young woman is swept away to a house atop a mountain of blood-red clay— a place filled with secrets that will haunt her forever. Between desire and darkness, between mystery and madness, lies the truth behind Crimson Peak. From the imagination of director Guillermo del Toro (Pan's Labyrinth) comes a gothic romance masterpiece starring Tom Hiddleston, Jessica Chastain, Mia Wasikowska and Charlie Hunnam.

I was skeptical about purchasing this move. I'm so glad I did. It is a refreshing break from the Prequel and Sequel overloads that continue to be tossed out to movies goers. Don't want it with someone who jumps and screams a lot...

This is another one of Del Toro’s fairytales. The set designs in this movie are incredible. Same thing with the costumes. If you look at the picture a long enough, you will notice that everything is perfect. Even the way the gore is portrayed. If you liked pans labyrinth, the devils backbone, blade II and of course the shape of water, You’ll definitely adore this movie.

To preface this review: I'm not the biggest Guillermo del Toro fan. I like his stuff well enough, but I don't understand the fuss around him that has essentially made him a brand. It's easy to go back and say how much you enjoyed Cronos as it was an introduction to the director for many or how great Pan's Labyrinth was because it is in fact that (I still can't see del Toro ever hitting that kind of high again), but beyond his somewhat spotty resume what is there? I thought Pacific Rim was fine, but nowhere near great or even worth the excitement many a fanboy have lauded it with since the films release two years ago that have garnered it a sequel campaign for the ages (will it be made or not?!?!? Ahh who knows!!). With Crimson Peak though, I was intrigued from the moment gothic horror and del Toro's name were thrown together in the same sentence. It made perfect sense, but more it would be magnificent to see something of this genre made in the modern Hollywood system. If there were ever a chance for del Toro to return to the heights of Labyrinth it would certainly have to be in this type of film, right? It's as if the horror genre is ingrained in the way the director thinks-each piece of writing attempting to elicit the horror of whatever circumstances his characters find themselves in with a flourish of the fantastical thrown in to boot. As penned by Del Toro and Matthew Robbins (The Sugarland Express, Mimic) Crimson Peak is an amalgamation of something Edgar Allen Poe might have thought up conveyed in the style of the horror films of the fifties and sixties. It is easy to say that the film could easily fall into the "all style and no substance" category, but it's also easy to see there is a lot going on under the surface here even if the film I saw isn't exactly the one I expected. Given the title seemed to be referring to the colossal gothic mansion that the trio of main characters inhabit I imagined this would be a tale of a haunted family heirloom that held plenty of secrets for the innocent Edith Cushing (Mia Wasikowska) to discover, but while this element certainly plays into the film, Crimson Peak is more about desire and how the nature of such emotion can consume every inch of our being.

One Incredible Ghost Story

Del Toro’s new film is a gripping, traditional Gothic tale. The crumbling mansion, family secrets, isolation, ghosts, the power of the past, these familiar Gothic tropes are used spectacularly to create a film that is a visual delight and genuinely frightening.
It begins in the real world but, as in many fairy tales and myths, the heroine is lured away from her safe home to a dreadful Otherworld, imprisoned and alone. This is Allerdale Hall, sitting atop the Crimson Peak, where she is plunged into a world of supernatural horror, decadence and decay. Brilliantly filmed, these scenes juxtapose decay and disrepair with spectacular beauty. In the Otherworld of Allerdale Hall Edith is forced to shed her identity of lovestruck ingénue and recreate herself, drawing on strengths she did not know she possessed. Ironically, it is her experience in the Otherworld which enables her to fully realise her humanity. She emerges from her experience a different person.
The film explores are the deceptiveness and partiality of vision, where nothing is as it seems, including one’s own self. The ghosts are satisfyingly scary and are crucial to the film's plot and themes. Both Thomas and Lucille are tragic characters, sinister and mysterious, but vulnerable and conflicted. The film is also a mystery story in the Poe tradition, as Edith resolutely pursues the truth about Allerdale Hall and its inhabitants.
Other intertextual inspirations for the film include Rebecca, The Fall of the House of Usher, and Bluebeard. Del Toro clearly knows his Gothic. Here he draws on such influences to create a smouldering, stunning film, filled with menace, suspenseful and with plenty of plot twists and surprises. Highly recommended.

A visual Gothic feast

"Crimson Peak" never fails to live up to the high visual standard set by director Guillermo Del Toro, and while C.P. may not bring the big scares that the dark subject material requires; this gothic tale is still worth a look. Part ghost story, part haunted house, part story of self discovery, C.P. places its main protagonist (Edith) at the center of what is to be a rocky ride as she delves deeper into the mystery at hand and consequently deeper into her own past. Strong performances from Mia Wasikowska, Tom Hiddleson, and Jessica Chastain help to flesh out the storyline and keeps things moving along. For many horror fans C.P. may not deliver quite the experience that was expected as Del Toro's ghosts fit more into the monster/creature category (to which he excels) than that of spirits. But for fans of his visionary style this is a must see. Although not as strong as "Pan's Labyrinth" C.R. continues to demonstrate Del Toro's passion for the dark and the things that inhabit them.

This is one of the best looking films of 2015, making it absurd that it didn't get an Oscar nomination for Best Art Direction. Some prominent critics loved the film and it was chosen as an overlooked film to be part of Ebertfest, but many others dismissed it as if making a film look this good is an easy thing to accomplish. The Blu-ray extras illustrate great attention to details that most viewers would only notice subconsciously.
The plot itself is pretty straightforward and rather typical of the Gothic Romance subgenre --- the film was improperly marketed as a horror film, which led to some viewer backlash from moviegoers expecting to be scared. Unless you rarely watch films, you'll likely be able to see where the story is going well ahead of time, but that frees up the viewer to divert their attention to the impressive work of the art departments and the film's symbolism and themes.
The only thing keeping this film from appealing to the Jane Eyre, Rebecca, and Wuthering Heights crowd are some graphic scenes of violence. The film will probably be most appreciated by fans of Mario Bava, Hammer horror and Roger Corman's Poe films. It's probably a small miracle that a Hollywood studio funded a film from such a niche genre, and therefore a shame not to embrace it. This will likely develop a cult following on home video. Highly recommended, given the right audience.

Crimson Peak was slammed by critics when it was released, as the trailers had made it look like a haunted house fright fest with ghosts as villains. So naturally those expecting that, were massively disappointed when the movie turned out to be a gothic romance, high on atmosphere and set design. But don't let that fool you. Crimson Peak is still a horror film. And an eerie one at that. The true horror, is love, and the terrible things it can drive people to do. The set design is some of the most extraordinarily amazing I have ever seen. The house is more scary than the villains it's so thoughtfully creepy, and all actors involved sell the environment and it's scares like pros. If the Victorian era is your cup of tea, Crimson Peak makes for a great Halloween treat.
