For an Old iMac

I replaced the HDD in my 2011 iMac with this SSD. It's now faster than when it was new! But there is an issue when you remove the original HDD that came with your iMac. That HDD comes with an internal temperature sensor which controls the cooling fan speed. Without this temperature sensor the cooling fan will run at full speed, all the time. This is extremely noisy.
There are a couple of ways to get around this problem. One way is to short out the wires which connect to the HDD thermal sensor. This will deactivate the cooling fan completely so you will get no cooling of your SSD. These things can get very hot. (This Crucial SSD claims to have "Adaptive Thermal Protection" which is supposed to prevent overheating.) The second way is to get an app which will allow manual control of the cooling fan. But there are a couple of problems with this method. First, you will not know what the temperature of your SSD is so you won't really know how fast your fan should be running. Even if you knew the temperature of your SSD you would still have to constantly monitor it and keep adjusting your fan speed manually. The third and I think best way is to buy an OWC digital thermal sensor which you attach to body of your SSD. It is also the power and data cable. It plugs into the motherboard just like the original sensor on your Apple HDD. These sensors are kind of pricey (close to forty dollars) but well worth it to me, especially when compared to the price of a new computer.
Check out the OWC website for instructional videos for replacing the HDD in your iMac with an SSD. You could also install an SSD in your iMac without removing your HDD by putting it behind/under the optical drive. But this will interfere with the airflow which cools the optical drive and the GPU. These old iMacs are known to have overheating problems with their GPUs so I opted to remove the HDD and use that bay for my SSD. You can alway buy an external adapter and continue to use the HDD attached to your iMac with a cable.
To me, my old iMac was worth upgrading as its monitor is UHD and its Intel i5 is still good enough for my general computing needs. Besides, now is not a good time to buy a new iMac as the next generation will be a significant upgrade with its M1X chip. Better to wait for that than to buy a soon to be obsolete Intel iMac.

Installed easily and boots OS fast. Although more expensive than competitors, the easy download and Acronis license use of the clone and back up software copy makes price differential worth while. I was up and running with a cloned disc first time and old laptop

Very good value SSD for my wife's older computer. The 4 year old computer used to take a minute to boot up but with this drive it is ready in seconds. Which means that for $50, she now has a computer nearly as fast as a new one.

My laptop’s performance was getting slower that last few years. When I decided to switch to a SSD, it was one of the best decision I ever made for a tech purchase. Once installed, it’s basically day and night in term of performance, speed and bootup time. It’s a must!!!

Bought this SSD for a desktop, and use it as my gaming drive. Very happy with the speed and the overall performance. The SSD itself is nicely built, comes with a spacer so that it fits snuggly on your laptop/desktop, if needed.

Excellant addition to my desktop. My old hard drive was freezing and causing data to be lost including the actual OS. This not only resolves the data issues but made an older computer boot very quickly. It feels like a new Computer.

This particular SSD replaced a severely slow and decrepit HDD in a laptop. I think my kids dropped it a few too many times because that laptop took MINUTES to load. Now, it boots and runs like brand new.
Still have an old-school hard drive? Use Crucial’s online scanner to find out what SSD will fit your computer.
Crucial is the only SSD Brand I have used at home and for the workplace computers. No, I don’t work for them. I’m not even in the IT department. I just know enough to be dangerous.

The drive works well, and replaces a regular SATA drive in my laptop. The Acronis software does work, but I had to reconfigure my original hard drive, which was larger than the 500 GB Crucial ssd. Once I figured out how to do that, the cloning worked with no issues.

I bought this see how my old slow and unwanted laptop would feel. I was impressed. The laptop felt brand new again. Load times were almost instant and I now threw the idea away that i needed a new laptop. Also had to buy a sata cable for cloning the old hardware which was not an expensive purchase and quite useful to have.
