HIGH SPEED – LARGE CAPACITY – COMPACT SSD

The Crucial X10 2TB USB Portable Solid State Drive (SSD) (Model CT2000X10SSD9) is a new model in the Crucial product line with large capacity, a compact and lightweight profile and a specification of up to 2,100 MB/s sequential read speed. Crucial does not provide a specification for a claim of sequential write speed for this drive. The Crucial X10 is available in several other storage capacities which are 1TB, 4TB, 6TB and 8TB models. All of the X10 drives have the same specifications, other than capacity. In addition to the very impressive read speeds claimed by Crucial, they all have a USB 3.2 Gen-2x2 interface (SS 20), rated for 20Gbps. USB 3.2 Gen-2x2 uses two lanes of 10 Gbps (standard USB 3.2 Gen-2) to achieve the 20 Gbps rate. Crucial, whose parent company is Micron, is a well-established and well-respected manufacturer of flash memory and SSD consumer products. I have purchased Crucial memory for several years, and the factory installed SSD in one of my laptops is a Crucial SSD. I have also been using a similar model, the Crucial X10 Pro SSD for a couple of years. Those drives continue to perform reliably after years of use. The case of the Crucial X10 appears to be fabricated of blue plastic, unlike the X10 Pro which has an anodized aluminum case. The case has chamfered edges all around its circumference. There is an integral lanyard hole in one corner (although no lanyard or clip is included). The X10 drive lacks the drive activity light that is present on the X10 Pro. The overall dimensions are a very compact 2.6” (65 mm) long x 2” (50 mm) wide x 0.4” (10 mm) thick. The only apparent opening for potential admittance of dust or liquid is the single USB-C connector port, and the device carries an IP 65 rating for water and dust resistance. A rating of IP 65 indicates that the unit is Dust Resistant and protected from water jets (but not powerful water jets or any submersion in liquid). This IP rating is superior to that of the X10 Pro drive which carries an IP55 rating. Crucial claims that the X-10 can withstand a drop of up to 9.8 feet / 3 meters on a carpeted floor without impact to data, but there is no reference to testing certifications or standards in support of that claim. The Crucial X10 weighs only 1.3 oz (37 g). It is both lightweight and compact. Furnished in the box with the Crucial X10 is a 9” (22.8 cm) long USB-C to USB-C cable. There is no USB-A cable or adaptor included. I find the short 9” cable to be inconvenient and limiting; a few more inches of cable would be nice. The multi-language printed insert which is also included in the package, provides nothing more than the terms of the Crucial Warranty, and the Crucial website URL for support. The Crucial X10 carries a three (3) year warranty (the X10 Pro has a 5 year warranty). Portable SSDs are extraordinarily convenient and useful for many purposes. Video content producers and photographers find them to be essential. Given their large capacity and high data transfer rates they are ideal for those purposes as well as data backup and storage, and notably, for use as a portable file store when using multiple computers, and particularly when travelling away from home or primary workplace. I rely heavily on portable SSDs for those purposes. The Crucial X10 is well-suited for working with large files and applications. The fast read/write speeds facilitate my transferring large image files and video files and also allows me to edit and work with those files directly on the Crucial X10 using Adobe Creative Cloud applications. The fast Crucial X10 makes even video workflow tasks efficient. I work with multiple computers, with lots of large files and numerous resource demanding applications. I am very reliant on external, USB SSDs for using my data files across multiple computers. Additionally, it is essential for me to have complete portability. On any given day I take the laptop or tablet that suits my needs, accompanied by the external USB SSD, or multiple SSDs that I need for the day and resultantly have complete flexibility and portability. An important aspect of the selection criteria for portable drives can be data security. When I am on the go with a laptop and external SSD, it is crucial that my data remains secure. The potential for compromised or exposed sensitive or private data, through loss or theft of the drive is a critically important consideration, particularly when travelling. Regrettably, the Crucial X10 does not offer any physical security, such as a biometric fingerprint reader, nor does it offer any logical security such as encryption. The Crucial X10 is preformatted in exFAT, which is appropriate for Windows PCs, Chromebooks, Macs and many gaming systems. It can easily be quick formatted to NTFS if desired. The X10 can be used with multiple platforms including Windows, Mac, Android, iPad, PC, Linux, Xbox and PlayStation gaming consoles. Crucial’s drive management application named Storage Executive, is available for download from the Crucial website. Crucial provides links with which to download short trials of Adobe Acrobat Pro, mylio photos or Acronis backup. The 2,100 MB/s sequential read speed advertised for the Crucial X10 is an excellent specification, however a write speed specification is not provided by Crucial. Those high data transfer rates are only achievable when the attached computer is equipped with a USB 3.2 Gen-2x2 (20 Gb/s) (aka SS 20) or faster interface. My primary laptop, which I used for benchmarking the X10, has Thunderbolt 4, 40 Gbps ports, therefore I hoped to see speeds approximating the advertised 2,100 MB/s sequential reads. Data transfer rates were measured with Crystal DiskMark 8, with the best speeds measured at 994.26 Mb/s Sequential Reads and 995.69 Mb/s Sequential Writes on different tests. I benchmarked using both of my Thunderbolt 4 ports and I utilized the short USB 3.2 cable that Crucial supplied with the X10. Obviously, the data rates that I obtained are not slow, but they are only about 50% of the expected speeds based on Crucial’s specifications. Evidently the controller for the Thunderbolt 4 / USB 4 ports in my relatively new laptop, while being backside compatible with USB 3 Gen 2, does not support Gen 2x2 (SS 20) and is only supporting 10 GB/s USB 3.2. The Crucial X10 does become slightly warm when attached to a computer and generates heat in proportion to activity when it is actively in use. Large data transfers generate palpable, but not uncomfortable or concerning levels of heat. Typically, this type of drive employs a layer of PCM (Phase Change Material) to somewhat mitigate the heat generated by active use (presumably encapsulated paraffin wax). Overall, the Crucial X10 2 TB Portable SSD is excellent! It offers large capacity, extremely fast data transfer rates if your computer supports USB 3.2 Gen 2x2, and a compact and lightweight profile. Even with 10 GB/s speed limitations attributable to my laptop’s USB interface, I find it to be an excellent drive for photography and videography. The Crucial X10 appears to be physically durable, and based on my prior experience with other Crucial drives, including the X10 Pro, I am confident that it will be very reliable. The very compact dimensions and very light weight of the drive is very attractive. The Crucial X10 2TB Portable SSD is certainly worthy of serious consideration and I am comfortable with recommending it!

    Light and Speedy Little Drive

I’m in love with this lightweight and speedy little drive from Crucial. The X10 is very compact, and it fits nicely and comfortably in the palm of your hands with no sharp edges or rough textures on the surface. It has a cutout in one of the corners where one can connect a ring or lanyard, as well as a USB-C port on the left side of the Crucial logo. I love that it’s IP65 rated for dust and water resistance as well as being drop-proof up to 7.5 feet. I usually take very good care of my gadgets, but these certifications put my mind at more ease and gives me confidence about the endurance and robustness of the product from Crucial. When the X10 was connected to my Windows 11 laptop, the reported available space was 1.81TB, and it was preformatted as exFAT. I downloaded and installed the Crucial Storage Executive software to check for any updates, but my 2TB X10 was already on the latest firmware (U3CR0B01). Besides using the app to check for and install firmware updates, the Crucial Storage Executive can also provide detailed drive and S.M.A.R.T. information, format or sanitize it, and perform a self-test diagnostic, which are all useful features. Speaking of connections, I was disappointed that the X10 was not accompanied with a USB 3.2 2x2 (20 Gbps) cable. When did portable hard drive manufacturers stop including cables with their products? Or is it just Crucial, I’m not sure. Either way, I was let down that the box did not include everything I needed to start using the product right away. I do have some USB-C to USB-C cables but I suspect that none of them are capable of supporting USB 3.2 2x2 (20 Gbps) speeds. The cable I did have, however, still provided decent performance when I ran the CrystalDiskMark benchmark (see screenshot). Aside from synthetics, in real-world usage, the X10 provided quick transfers of both large (video, game ISOs, programs) and small files alike. I encountered no overheating or copy/move errors, and the X10 executed its duties swiftly and efficiently. Right now, my 2TB X10 is responsible for housing my PC gaming collection as well as emulators and related files. There are tons of big and small files but the X10 was quickly able to copy the files over to itself without any drama in Windows 11 which I appreciated very much. I don’t know how often I’ll be using the X10 with my Android smartphones and Apple iPads, but it’s good to know that it is ready-to-go when I am. Extra compatibility and flexibility, I say, are almost always a good thing that make life a bit less complicated and easier. 😊 Overall, I’m very satisfied, content, and even happy, with the Crucial X10 2TB portable drive. I love its small, lightweight formfactor, its strong synthetic and real-world transfer speeds, and its durability to withstand against increment weather and human clumsiness. I only wish that Crucial will, going forward, includes the appropriate cables inside the box so that their customers can experience the maximum potential of their product right away, right after they finish unboxing the item. 4.5 Stars.

I've been using this externall SSD for almost a week now, and it's been super reliable thus far. Build quality of the drive is good. The entire enclosure feels like it is made of plastic. I have no issues with that because it keeps the drive very compact and lightweight. Crucial claims it is dust and water resistant and drop resistant upto 3 meters. I wouldn't attempt dunking it in a pool but I assume it will survive some rain or splashes. It comes with a high speed usb C cable included. A short one, but I'm just happy to see a cable in the box. The SSD drive is very compact! I was impressed at how small and lightweight this drive is. It is probably the smallest and lightest externall 2 TB SSD I have ever owned. It is very very fast. It's fast enough to record PRO RES HDR video directly onto the drive from my iPhone 16 Pro Max. It was able to record onto the drive instantly, there was no delay in recording the video onto the drive with my iPhone. I was pretty impressed because the file afterward was about 5 gigs long and soon as I closed the camera app, the file was already on the drive and ready to go. I was expecting some kind of buffer, but nope. None. It all happened instantaneously. The drive didn't hot either while recording the 5 minute test video. I don't intend on using it to record apple PRO RES HDR videos all the time, because the files are insanely large. But I can testify that this drive is fast enough to do so if you wish. I plan on using this drive to store videos and photos that I take with my mirrorless cameras. The drive is fast enough to edit the files directly on the drive if you also wish to. Well, you'd need a computer with a thunderbolt or comparable speeds to do that. This drive can also be used with PC, iPhone, iPad, Android, Mac, and even game consoles! As far as build quality and long term reliability, I feel confident in trusting that it will serve me for quite some time. I've used Crucial SSD's in the past, and I haven't had one fail on me to this day. I love just how compact and tiny this drive is. It hardly takes up any space in my laptop bag. If you are looking for an external SSD for media storage, video editing, or installing and running games on your PC , Steamdeck or Game console. I think you will be more than satisfied with this SSD.

Crucial X10 2 TB External SSD is a product of the company Micron, which is a well renowned manufacturer of computer memory and data storage devices like Flash memory and SSDs. This SSD comes with various size options of 1 / 2 / 4 / 8 TB. This supports up to 2100 MB/s sequential read speed. Compatibility and Connectivity: ----------------------------------------- This can just be plugged in and used as-is. By default, it is preformatted to exFAT file system. This is compatible with devices with Windows, Android and Mac OS. It can be formatted to NTFS as well if required. This comes with a USB-C to USB-C cable and supports USB 3.2 Gen-2 as well as regular USB ports. This can also connect to devices through a USB-C to USB-A cable. I was able to connect it to my TV and watch the contents from the drive. Speed: ---------- This external SSD supports up to 2100 MB/s sequential read speed when used with a USB 3.2 Gen-2. However, with USB-C it supports about 1000 MB/s speed. When I used it with a Windows 11 laptop, i was able to copy stuff with a speed of about 1 GB/s when connected through USB-C. I connected it to an old windows 10 laptop with USB-A 3.0 port, and I was able to get a speed of 25 MB/s. When connected to an Android 15 phone using USB-C, I was able to get a little over 100 MB/s. Uses: --------- This SSD can be extremely useful for operations that requires super-fast response time. Like to install and play games on it, video processing etc. This can also be an extended disc space for laptops and desktops. I find it super fast and convenient to backup my videos and pics directly from phone. Durability: --------------- This SSD is IP65 dust and water resistant and drop resistant up to 3 meters (about 9.8 feet) on a carpet floor. The device did not heat up while backing up. However, when used for a longer duration for game play, it slightly warms up (but not hot by any means). Summary: -------------- Overall, this is an amazing External SSD. Its extremely light-weight, very small and super-fast. And I am happy to recommend this to anyone looking for an external SSD.

Great drive; software integration could use work

The drive seems to work great and be rugged. The software and web support could use some work. 5 stars for the drive; 3 stars for the software integration. The Crucial X10 is a solid little performer. It’s a 2 tb portable ssd that comes with a 3 yr limited warranty and everything you need to backup your system or offload big files (or even both at the same time). It works fast and without much hassle, and that’s really all you want out of a drive. The documentation including in the package could be better, and the online support is a bit awkward to engage. Depending on how you want to use the drive, that may not matter at all. For what it’s worth, once you figure out how to access the Acronis software, it provides a serviceable platform for data security as far as I have explored. It's more than a little bit amazing to me that a tiny device with the footprint of 2” x 2.5” x .25” holds up to 2tb of data. It’s also dust, water, and drop resistant (up to 3 meters), so it’s a pretty tough piece of hardware too. While not encased in rubber (like some portable ssds), it seems reasonable stout without being unnecessarily large or heavy. The device is basically plug and play. I’ve only tested it on a PC but it can be formatted to work with a MAC and Android too. It comes with a short USB-C to C cable for connecting easily to whatever device you choose. It showed up in my explorer window without any difficulty and my machine instantly recognized the drive. That part was easy. Dragging folders/files over to it to copy or move them is also easy from the main home file menu on the pc. It writes very quickly. 20 GB of photos and videos, including more than 2000 items, were transferred in less than 3 minutes. Once ejected, everything was instantly readable by another machine. In other words, the drive does its main mission well. Software integration was a little annoying. The info packet that comes with the drive offers just a website or QR code to “get started,” but the website takes you to a rather anonymous page that offers support for all their external and portable ssds. The X10 isn’t clearly listed on this page, and there are several optional software utilities to download. The Storage Executive program seems like something you’re supposed to download, and maybe it’s helpful in the long run with options for optimizing the ssd drive, as well as the computer the package is installed upon, or presumably, other ssd portables too. Mostly it makes me nervous that I will accidentally reformat my drive. But it hardly seems like this program is necessary and certainly there are others out there that you could use. The “Crucial Portable SSD Utility” program that is also available for download allows you to password protect the drive. This is probably a good idea, but the program also warns you that if you do so and lose the password, there is nothing Crucial can do for you. Which I’m sure is always the case, but it’s good to be super cautious in this regard. If you lose the password, you’re locked out of all your data. Other than that, I’ve not really been able to use this utility. Every time it opens, it tells me to connect a drive. The drive is connected and I can see it, buy the Utility program seems to be confused about it. I have no idea why. It does warn to make sure no other program is using the drive when you try to use the utility. As far as I can tell, nothing else is operating with it. But it’s not seeing the drive. I did also download the backup software that Crucial makes available, which is called Acronis. Getting this software was also a bit convoluted, as the startup links that come on the drive did not immediately point to it. It does bring you to a registration page for the X10 and offers a trial of adobe acrobat pro. The Acronis software is available through the “support” tab, and I was able to download it and use it to create a backup file. However, not all features of the Acronis software are enables through the free download. Some features require the user to pay an additional fee. However, the free version will let you make backups, clone drives, and should accommodate most needs, like being able to create bootable media and setup new drives. There are plenty of ways to do this, however, so I’m not sure how much of a bonus Acronis is. It’s pretty simple to use and worked quietly in the background while I was doing other things. I don’t know how long the full backup really took, as I walked away and it was done in the morning. I did not bother with the photo organizer software that Crucial is also hawking. After dealing with the first several pieces of software, I decided I didn't want to start another download of who knows what to my pc.

    Great, Compact portable SSD

This review is for the Crucial X10 2Tb SSD. This is the non-Pro version. With the prices of SSDs coming down recently, I was in search of a very small, portable drive that I could throw in a bag when I was on the go. 2Tb seemed the sweet spot between size and cost, so I focused my attention there. Most of my drives are from another brand and I was tempted to go that direction before I came across the X10. I know Crucial as a maker of memory for computers. I have a couple of their memory sticks in my current system. They've always been very reliable and cost effective. When I discovered they had a line of portable SSDs, I wanted to give them a chance. The other brand Iwas looking at had failed me in the past and I wanted to see how the Crucial performed. My main system is a 2025 Mac Studio. I also have a MAcbook Air and a Microsoft Surface at work. I needed a small drive that I could use to movve files in between them and perform as a backup while traveling. The X10 is SMALL. Maybe 2"x3" and a half inch thick. In the package you get a drive and a small USB-c to USB-C cable. The instructions are no more than a QR code that points to a very confusing website. The website allows you to register the device for it's warranty and links you to firmware updates and the Crucial drive optimizer software. This software only works on a PC (and my Company won't allow it on the work PC), so I didn't try to use it. It would have been nice to offer a Mac version too. Plugging in the drive to my Mac Studio was simple. It had no issues showing up in the file system. I did a large copy of about 1Tb of files and it moved pretty fast. It was a little over a minute to transfer. Your mileage may vary though depending on your machine and USB port. Copying back and forth to the drive produced no errors in the short time I've had it. The drive was readable by both my Mac and PC systems. So far I'm very happy with my purchase. Are there any downsides? Not really. The cost for 2Tb was in line with other offerings. You can step up to the Pro model for about $50 more but all that buys you is a little more rugged case and some water resistance. Not worth it for my application. I do wish Crucial had included a small pouch or something to put the drive and cable in while transporting. For the price charge, they could have easily done that. It would have made the package complete. It's a great buy though, even if you do have to buy your own pouch/case.

Wow, this SSD is light! I thought for one moment that the box was empty. It is also quite small, measuring 2x2.5 inches, it can fit in an earbud case. There is also a lanyard hole on the side. Although the SSD is supposed to take a several feet fall, I would rather keep it in a case. It comes with a USB-C to USB-C cable, but can also be used with a high-speed USB-C to USB-A cord. I tried with my Windows laptop and a Legion Go gaming handheld. The SSD is supposed to have speeds up to 2,100MB/s read-2000MB/s write, but you must have a device that has a USB 3.2 Gen2 (2X2). On a Thunderbolt 4 port, I was able to do a stable 1kMB/s on average. Nevertheless, every download or upload transfer, including 150GB games, was blazingly fast without errors. The main use for this SSD is portable gaming, and I am very pleased with the overall experience. Since the SSD is so light, having it dangling on the back of the Legion Go, it is almost unnoticeable. I downloaded some AAA titles, and all ran well with no hiccups. This works great for me as I can carry my games and play them on the go, or at my laptop or desktop. The IP65 rating brings peace of mind so a little humidity or dust will not be an issue, especially when using outside. The SSD comes with some software offerings, including Mylio Photos+, Acronis True Image and a one-month trial of Adobe Acrobat Pro, which is definitely worth a look. Yes, portable SSDs have become more expensive, but compared to other offerings and considering the size, weight, speeds, and reliability of this SSD, I would certainly recommend it.

Tiny - Super fast - Dust, Water & Drop Resistant I have the 2TB version and I cannot believe how tiny this SSD is! Extremely portable and super fast! On top of it, it’s dust, water and drop resistant! What else can we ask for?! The SSD drive comes with a small USB-C cable. The moment I plugged it into my laptop with Windows 11, it was ready to be used! I tested its write speed by copying a 20GB VM (Virtual Machine). It only took 32 seconds! That’s roughly 1.5 seconds per GB! So, you could copy a ton of pictures and videos, for example, in no time. The specs say its read speeds are even faster, up to 2,100 MB/s. It’s tiny but mighty! The drive came with a few files. A “welcome” pdf file giving you an overview of the extras it has such as trial periods for Adobe Acrobat Pro, Mylo Photos and Acronis (for secure back ups). The most helpful file I found was a shortcut to Crucial’s support website. In there, you are invited to register the product so that your 3-year warranty gets started. That way you can also submit a claim if need be. Another handy information in their support website was about their free software tool called “Storage Executive”. Once you download and install it, the tool allows you to manage your SSD, such as verifying its current health status, checking if you have the latest firmware and download the latest if needed, and perhaps most importantly, enable the “Momentum Cache feature” as they claim that would make many SSD operations up to 10x faster. I didn’t know how to test this, but it sounds impressive. Being tiny, with large storage, super fast, and dust/water/drop resistant, there’s nothing it’s missing. I absolutely recommend this product!

It's hard to say a lot about a simple device that just works. But in a way that says it all. This Crucial X10 2TB Portable Drive is everything I wanted it to be. It's SO tiny that you can easily carry it in your pocket or purse while having a whopping TWO TERABYTES of storage which is plenty for backing up photos, music, and movies! It feels very sturdy - I'm not worried about dropping it or it getting damaged simply being in my pocket or in a bag. And it's blazing fast! I transferred a 5GB video file from my Macbook to the X10 and it took only 10 seconds. Because this drive is so small but so fast and has plenty of memory, it makes it as functional as a thumb drive. I was able to connect it to my iPhone 16 Pro Max using the included USB-C connector and film in full Apple ProRes in 4K directly to the drive with no issues at all. It was also easy to transfer photos and files from my phone directly to the drive for backup. All in all this is an excellent SSD Drive that performs exactly as I would expect it to. It has a nice looking design. It is built well. It performs to expectations, meaning it's blazing fast. And it does all this while staying super small which makes it extremely versatile so that I can use it in in a lot of different scenarios.

This is very small and light, it's about 2.5" x 2" and very thin. The interface on this SSD, and this is very important, is USB 3.2 Gen 2x2, rated at 20Gpbs. The drive has a small pass-through opening to add a lanyard (not included), and comes with a short USB-C cable (About 8" or so). The shell is all plastic, matte blue in my case with polished sides. There are no drivers required and no software included on It, just a PDF as a brochure and some web links. Like most external drives, it comes pre-formatted as ExFAT so it's ready to go in about every system. It can also be formatted with macOS or NTFS partitions is needed. For example, I'm using another Crucial drive like this as encrypted APFS to use in macOS. Speed-wise, here's the interesting part: It can go about as fast for sequential read an writes as the interface allows. On a newer Windows laptop I was able to measure around 2000 Mb/s in both read and write. However, on two different MacBook Pro (Including an M3 model), I as able to achieve half of that. macOS System Information tool shows the connection as USB 3.1. So I contacted Micron's support via chat. I was pleasantly surprised that I got to a human right away and the person gave me the correct information right away, however it's not what I wanted to hear: It's a limitation on Apple's USB-C ports, which although they are Thunderbolt and USB4 capable, they do not support USB 3.2. I looked it up in Apple's community sites and it's correct, not even the current M4 generation supports USB 3.2. I also tested on a Microsoft Surface Pro 9 and same result. Only a newer PC supports this connection at full speed. It works perfectly on macOS, just not at full speed when using the internal USB4 ports. It's made in Thailand and comes with a 3-year warranty. Differences with X10 Pro: Speeds will be the same, both are USB 3.2 and should deliver the same speeds overall. The main difference is that the 'Pro' have an aluminum shell with rubberized bottom. These are hard plastic. The pro has a white LED and this has no lights. This has a lanyard opening and the Pros have larger opening that could fit through a small carabiner. The other difference is the warranty: The pro line, at the time I got mine, carries 5-year, this has a respectable 3-year warranty. Overall, it's a fantastic portable SSD. Micron (Crucial's parent company) is one of the largest memory makers, and this is made directly by them. I don't however see much difference in price between this and their pro line, at today's prices. Also current Apple devices won't be able to fully benefit from their fast speeds, which is important if you need the speed and use macOS.

Outstanding External SSD for Data Security

If you don't have at least three back up methods, I have to say that you are doing yourself a great disservice. I've seen grown men reduced to tears due to losing the only copies of their Masters dissertation because they weren't doing good data backup! I myself keep two copies of my data (one as a TimeMachine backup, and one as a simple backup), here in my fireproof safe. I then also have a third SSD which I rotate year when I go home to see my parents. That way, there is always a safe copy somewhere. And that doesn't include all the stuff I have 'In the Cloud' (which is just someone else's computer/hard drive). I also rotate out the devices on an every other year schedule. That way, I'm keeping up with technology and also hedging against any degradation of the SSD/Media. So kind of like the U.S. Senate, I get a full cycle of my three devices every six years. I've been a huge fan of Micron ever since they built me my first custom-made tower back in the late 90's (yeah, I'm old, so what). And with this new Crucial X10, ALL three of my storage devices are part of the X-Series. You can't beat the speed, size, and price per TB combo of this model. I'm not going to go into any details of how fast it is or anything else (though I will post the Speedtest data for those who care), what's more important is convincing you that data backup is important, and that I have trusted all of my data to multiple iterations of the Crucial X series. If that doesn't speak volumes about how much I like these SSDs, I don't know what else I can say to make you understand. If you need a great SSD for whatever your storage need is, you will be hard pressed to find a better one than the Crucial X10 or its brethren.

The Crucial X10 Portable SSD is one of the smallest and most compact external solid-state drives I have reviewed, measuring just 0.3 by 2.6 by 2 inches (Height/Width/Depth). If you have the hardware to match, it can run at USB 3.2 Gen 2 speeds. The way I understand it, for professionals who need to store and quickly work with large files, this disk is a great option. However, for folks who need a drive to do complete backups of another disk, the QLC (Quad-Level Cell) technology that is used in the X10 shows its greatest weakness quite quickly: When the SLC cache is filled and converts to QLC writes, the write speed becomes underwhelming. The X10 comes with a 9-inch USB-C-to-USB-C cable and is preformatted in the exFAT file format. It works out of the box with Windows and Mac (as well as Android, iPad, PC, Linux, Xbox, and PlayStation). Testing the X10 External SSD: Copying 1TB of files and folders from one disk to the X10 Connecting the X10 to my HP OMEN motherboard's 10 GBps USB 3.1 port, I copied 1TB of (Hi-Res) FLAC files from a SATA SSD to the X10. Both drives were formatted with NTFS. With 520 MB/s, its sequential write speed was initially high and constant until after 13 minutes, when it fell considerably off the pace. After consulting with Micron Support (who are outstandingly kind, professional, and fast), I learned this slowdown was not caused by thermal throttling (after 13 minutes, the disk's temperature was 49 °C), but "... with large, sustained write operations, the performance decreases when the SLC cache is filled and it converts to QLC (Quad-Level Cell) writes. The X10 is a QLC drive and is not recommended for NAS (Network-Attached Storage) solutions or continuous writes. I needed to learn more about QLC (Quad-Level Cell) vs. TLC (Triple-Level Cell) disks. Now that I know the X10 is a QLC drive, what would a TLC drive do better? - QLC drives wear out faster when subjected to heavy workloads or frequent read/write operations. The X10 has a label on the box that states READ speeds up to 2100 MB/s. With those drives, READ speeds are sustained high (I tested this to be true), but write performance slows down significantly after the SLC cache is used up. QLC is suitable for read-heavy workloads . - TLC drives typically outperform QLC drives regarding continuous read/write operations, i.e., TLC is better for write-intensive tasks. In conclusion, the Crucial X10 Portable SSD is a "General-Purpose" SSD. It does extremely well in environments where, for example, video editing is being done, or just the normal day-to-day. It should not be used for NAS operations, or, as tested in my case, it should not be used as a backup disk to copy more than ~200 MB to the X10 continuously due to cache wear-out. Pros: - Lightweight, tiny, and compact - Super-fast continuous read speeds (providing you have a laptop or desktop that supports it) - You can string a loop to secure a strap on the corner of the drive that has a hole Cons: - Requires a USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 port to hit peak speeds of 2100 MB/s - Underwhelming sequential write speed - No indicator light for read/write operations Rating: 4 out of 5 stars.

The Crucial X10 SSD is a small, portable external drive with impressive storage and speed. Inside the box, you’ll find the X10 drive, a USB-C to USB-C cable, and some documentation. Setup is easy—just unpack it, connect the cable to the drive, and plug it into your device. The drive is recognized instantly. On Windows, you can access it through File Explorer. While it comes preloaded with some trial programs and links (mostly bloatware), it’s formatted in Ex-Fat and can be reformatted as needed. It’s great for mobile devices, storing data, photos, and apps. After a week of testing, its small size and fast performance are impressive. It averages 2K read/write speeds, and transferring 80GB of data from my workstation took under two minutes. Despite its compact size, it offers generous storage; the model tested is 2TB, with options up to 8TB. Pros: 1. Super-fast, compact, and lightweight portable drive 2. Compatible with multiple devices: Mobile, Windows, Mac 3. Available in various sizes from 1TB to 8TB 4. Includes a 3-year warranty upon registration Cons: Extended data transfers can make the drive noticeably warm, so keep that in mind.

The Crucial X10 2 TB is exactly what I needed. a relatively big capacity in the smallest form factor possible with USB C. The SSD comes pre- formatted with a few PDF files for support and Acronis Backup software. I didn't use them because I didn't need them. I bought this specifically to download and save a copy of my Photo Backups from Google and I already have about 1.5 TB in photos alone. the drive was extremely fast and did perform as expected. the package comes with no crazy blister packaging and it comes with a short USB C to USB C cable. Copying 1.5 TB to the drive was easy and quick and didn't cause the drive to over heat or even get warm. This drive can be used as a Thumb drive and I have used it to view photos and videos by directly connecting it to my big Screen TV. this was great as it doesn't require power like bigger hard drives like SATA drives. this was a great add on! so whatever you used to do with a Thumb drive, you can do with this, only from a name brand with proven quality and speed.

    Small Portable Fast SSD

BACKGROUND: Since the 1980’s I have been backing up data originally using “floppy disks”. Throughout the years, magnetic media technology exponentially advances to smaller, faster, with huge increases in storage capacity. Fast forward to 2025 and this new Crucial X10-2TB is an amazing hand-held SSD that should meet, if not exceed, most users’ storage requirements. ALLOCATION SIZE: The default format for the SSD was exFAT with a 512kb allocation unit size. When I copied a test Windows folder of 21.0GB from 36,401 files in 4,823 folders, the size used on the X10 drive was 31.9GB. Well, a 52% increase does not work for me due to the wasted space. So, I quick reformatted to a 128kb file unit allocation size, moved the same files of 21.0GB over, and now it used 23.8GB of space (13% increase). I can live with that, and I did not notice any increase with backup times. SPEED: The X10 advertises read speeds up to 2100 megabytes per second. Using CrystalDiskMark, I was able to achieve sequential read/write speeds around 980 MB/s. Although substantially lower than advertised, my reallocation size and thousands of small files, are probably the reasons. Regardless, the X10 speed is double what my current backup solution (a 1-TB competitor portable SSD) I had been using for the past year. USB-C: I welcome any PC ancillary device that has moved from USB-A to USB-C. This X10 SSD has a USB-C output port and includes a short 9-inch high-speed USB-C to USB-C cable. Both the drive and cable can easily be stored in your pocket if needed. INCLUDED APPS: On the SSD are web links for software and support (acronis-backup-software, mylio-photo-organizer, x10-support-website) plus a free month of Adobe® Acrobat Pro. Although I did not use these tools, others may find them beneficial if they do not already have working backup solutions. RATING: After using this Crucial X10 2TB External USB-C SSD for the past 5-days, it earned itself a solid 5-Star rating. Note that Crucial markets other sizes from 1-TB to 8-TB. Overall, very impressive indeed! .

Absolutely CRUCIAL for my gear bag!!!

I am on the go for both work and play and love to have my data with me whether it be a current project or just cherished memories in my gear bag. I love having multiple safe places with my data on it in the event of a catastrophic failure. Those were hurtful in the early days with disk drives. Now, I have all my data everywhere! Crucial makes that soooo easy, safe and fast! I have a few Crucial drives, But this one is for a home project to take all my mini DV home movies and port them onto the CrucialX10 for long-term backup and to access them on my PS5. First off – I love the form factor. The newest Crucial X10 that I am writing about is a cool blue color. I have a black one, but I like the color change options so I can immediately tell them apart. I also love that it is keyring ready, although they did not provide a ring or string to attach it to a ring. The keyring ready hole is nice to clip onto a bag so it’s always handy…It’s small but I don’t want to add anything else to my car keys so I clip it onto my gear bag. BUT YOU COULD! I love that it’s IP65. IP65 means it is dustproof and water resistant. Do not submerge! But a splash or rain should not hurt it! A coffee spill or beer explodes near it…not a problem! The biggest reason I love the Crucial X10…Flat-out breakneck speeds!!! I mean I can actually video edit on it. I can keep all my files on the X10 which keeps my computer hard drive clean, clutter-free, and fast. Gaming…same thing! Crucial states that it is 15 times faster than many traditional hard drives… Honestly, it feels way faster than 15 times. I mean I dumped 300GB of data like it was a Word doc onto the Crucial X10…Lighting fast!!! I also love the portability…. I dumped my Mini DV tapes onto the drive using a laptop and then just unplugged the USB C (which I love) and took it to my Imac for editing or my PS5 to watch them. Super easy! Overall, LOVE IT. I have other brands but for size, durability, and speed. I have not found anything better!

The Crucial X10 portable SSD is the newest edition in the X series. I’m already an owner of two Crucial SSDs, and my experience so far has been that they’re durable and reliable. This version of the X10 is blue, 2 TB and offers read/write speeds up to 2100 MB/s. My first transfer was from another Crucial SSD of around 330 GB. It finished the transfer in about 10 mins, meaning that it would take roughly 30 mins to transfer a terabyte. This transfer was completed on a 2022 Mac Studio and both SSDs were formatted to APFS. This SSD is also compatible with PC and Android. I love the design of Crucial SSDs, they just look so neat. Kinda reminds me of old video game cartridges, so I can see myself having a collection of these, perhaps in different colors. I’m a video editor so I need plenty of storage, so these come in handy, especially when they’re that small and dust/water resistant (IP65, which is an improvement from the previous model, which was IP55), and it can handle a drop up to 9 feet. I edited a video in Final Cut Pro with roughly 70 GB of 1080p footage, and the experience was very smooth, both in terms of editing and transferring footage between drives. The included cable is USB-C both directions and as usual, I recommend using that cable and not a longer, third-party cable unless strictly necessary. Also included is a one month subscription to Adobe Acrobat Pro, which I personally don’t need, since I already have the full subscription, but it might be a nice added bonus for you. Overall, a great SSD that’s fast, light and durable. It’s Crucial!
