    Great storage drive!

Great storage drive. Fast enough for most people by far. This thing is so small and portable and pairs up great if you carry it around with a laptop. While it is not the fastest portable SSD, it is nearly as fast as me moving data around between two very fast SSDs in my laptop. It connects via a USB 3.2 Gen 2 connector, and while there is a faster version of this exact drive from Crucial, this one will be more than fast enough for most people. Only those actively editing video directly from external SSDs need consider the faster X10 and even then, only if you have a USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 capable port on the actual computer itself. If you are just backing up or storing video, and photo files, the X9 is perfect. I am using it to back up music and photos in my case, and this is more than fast enough. I love how small this is too, especially if you are carrying it around with you on the go with a laptop where you also have to lug around other items like a charging brick. It also helps to keep my desktop decluttered from a larger traditional hard drive. Highly recommend this drive for back up and general file storage!

Small, pocketable and spacious - that's what you get with this drive! Speeds aren't the absolute fastest, but in such a small package having 2TB packs quite a punch. Crucial is a company I've always associated with reliability and never having to worry about losing my data - I have zero doubts this drive will be any different. . I was a little taken aback by the speeds, but then I remembered that this is a USB-C connection, not an NVME, and especially not a Gen 3 or gen 4! Doesn't seem to generate any felt heat after extended transfers either. Great for transferring around large files or having a pocket copy of all your essential tools - this will do great for me in my IT job where I always seem to need software with me, or, having a complete Linux distro with your entire software load-out installed on it that you can take with you. I can say this - Crucial seems to have hit another home-run with this drive - the only concern I have is the finish rubbing off, but then again that doesn't matter in the long run - even top-end cars have issues with their finish after getting lots of use!

    Speedy, Rugged, and Portable SSD

I’ve been using an old external mechanical hard drive for the past few years that is starting to make that dreading clicking noise. Needless to say, it was time for a replacement. The Crucial X9 Pro fits the bill perfectly. It is small, durable, and has a ton of space compared to my old external drive. Best of all, it is lightning fast. ===PROS=== - The X9 Pro is extremely small and portable. It is smaller than a credit card and weighs almost nothing. - Crucial has designed the X9 Pro to be very rugged and durable. They claim it is IP55 water and dust resistant, which provides very nice peace of mind. I of course don’t ever want to put this to the test, but it’s nice to know that the drive can survive all my travel adventures. - The drive is very fast. It’s not the fastest external SSD on the market, but for the vast majority of people and use cases, this is going to provide more speed than you’ll ever need. Crucial claims speeds of up to 1,050 MB/s read and write, which is pretty much exactly what I saw in my CrystalDiskMark speed tests (see attached screenshot). Sequential read speeds exceeded 1,050 MB/s, while sequential write speeds were slightly lower at 957 MB/s. Random read/write speeds are significantly slower, but still exponentially faster than an old mechanical drive. The only people who may need faster speeds are video editors or those who constantly transfer large sets of videos and photos. - There is a white LED activity light inside the keychain slot/lanyard hole that illuminates when the drive is plugged in. I thought it was a nice touch that makes the drive look very professional. ===CONS=== - My only complaint is that the included USB-C cable is tiny - it’s only a few inches long and makes plugging into a desktop computer very hard. I suppose it’s fine if you’re plugging into a laptop. Unfortunately, you can’t just use any old USB-C cable either - you have to use one that is certified for USB 3.2 Gen2 in order to get the fastest speeds from the drive. ===OVERALL=== The short cable aside, this is an excellent portable drive that is extremely compact and durable. It’s available in a variety of large storage options and it a huge upgrade over any old mechanical drive. Highly recommended!

Crucial knows memory and storage - and this little Crucial X9 Pro 2TB External (and I do mean little, so small, fits in the palm of your hand) drive is a GREAT example of their tech. First off, it’s shockingly small and portable. Easy to fit in a pocket or a purse even with a cable. It’s also very light - not in a way that makes you think it’s cheap, on the contrary, it seems very well put together and sturdy like it will last a long time and may even be able to stand up to some level of moderate abuse - but rather it’s light in an “efficient and modern” way that tells you it’s solid tech. The silver/gray (there’s a slight metallic sheen to it) is attractive without being flashy. On a USB 3.2 Gen 2 type-C port (up to 10Gbps) I was able to measure over 1030 MB/s reads and 970MB/s writes on the drive using CrystalDiskMark which is VERY good and nearly the advertised 1050 (it’s likely the difference is just due to testing conditions, this thing is very fast). And it doesn’t get hot at all when used in a temperature controlled room. And of course with no moving parts, it’s entirely silent. My first effort was to copy almost 1.5 GB of backed up random media from pictures to a few videos from my desktop to the Crucial external SSD. It took 9.5 seconds flat from start to finish! I’m impressed! So if you could use some extra very fast, very portable external storage for moving big files around / taking them with you OR for backup purposes, this is a great drive to try from a known name and at a good price to boot. Give it a try today!

Extremely portable and compact 2TB external SSD

The Crucial X9 Pro 2TB external SSD has an incredibly small footprint, measuring only 2.5" x 2" x 3/8". That makes it incredibly portable and one of the most versatile drives that I have used. I have many drives 2T, 3T and 5T drives, hooked up to a variety of products, but they all take up space and while yes, they are portable, don't even hold a candle to this drive. The case is aluminum and another key feature here is that the bottom of the drive has a rubber coating on it, so it doesn't move around. My other drives moves around a lot, so this is also a great design by Crucial. If you are worried about misplacing this drive due to its size in the top right hand corner of the aluminum case, there is a cut out/hole for a keyring, so you can have it conveniently with you - and the aluminum case will protect it. The included USB cable is really short, but that doesn't concern me too much. Hooking it to the back of my Mac, it rests nicely on the aluminum stand on the computer and sits just fine. Being so small and lightweight makes it really unobtrusive whether you are using a desktop of a laptop. Plugging in the Crucial X9 Pro to my Mac, I had a challenge - it didn't register right away. I had to unplug and reconnect a couple of times, and still nothing. I checked it out on another Mac I have, and still nothing, it wouldn't show up in the Finder. I then realized I was using a cable that I had attached to my Mac previously, and NOT the cable that came with the X9 Pro - so evidently it is imperative that you use the cable included. Once I realized that error, the drive showed up in the Finder without an issue. When connected, there is a white light that illuminates in the previously mentioned key ring attachment area. I went into Disk Utilities and set up the drive as I normally would and then set about transferring about 10GB of video files from a recent video shoot for my YouTube channel. With read/write speed so 1050MBPS, the transfer was done pretty quickly, and I didn't see any loss of data when reviewing the video clips. Another feature of the SSDs are no moving parts, nothing mechanical that can break, which also benefits the size, but also the longevity of the drive as well. Overall I couldn't be happier with the X9 Pro, it's size is superb, data transfer speeds are great, no data loss and a great form factor. This drive is going to be my go to, when out and about recording videos, and needing more storage on the fly.

Nice, Quick & Compact Potable SSD Drive

Got this external, portable drive to transfer files from my office to my home. Gotta say, it's better than I expected it to be. First off, it's much smaller than I expected. I'm used to 2.5" based portable drives, which are probably 4x larger than this drive, and 80mm M.2 based enclosures, which are narrower but much longer. This drive fits nicely in my pocket and holds 20x more data than the thumb drive I've been using recently. Another nice feature is the bottom face of the enclosure has a rubbery feel to it. When placed on a surface, it doesn't slide around as easily as my other drives. It's also got a hole in one corner for a lanyard. It might also be able to be placed on a keychain with the right loop. This hole also doubles as the drive’s activity light. The drive is water, dust, and sand resistant, meeting IP55 requirements. It can also be password protected and hardware encrypted (256‐bit AES) to help protect private data. It is compatible with Bitlocker To Go on Windows and FileVault on macOS. According to the Crucial website for this product, the Crucial Portable SSD Utility application for Windows and macOS is launching in September 2023. I was not able to find this software to test. This drive is quite fast for a USB drive. The USB C connection allows for transfer speeds up to 1050 MB/s according to their literature. I saw 1070 MB/s read speeds and 989 MB/s write speeds using Crystal Disk Mark 8. This compares to 458 read & 278 write for my 2.5" drive that uses USB A. I did have one issue, however. On the drive, there are links to the Crucial website, some free utility software and some trial software. One of the links leads to Crucial’s Storage Executive software that allows you to check on a Crucial drive's condition and firmware. Unfortunately, it looks like this software only works with internal drives. While my internal drive was recognized, this external drive was not. I guess I will need the soon to be released Portable SSD Utility for this functionality. We’ll see… All in all, this is a very good drive from a manufacturer I trust. I've never had a Crucial drive fail on me and I've purchased many over the years. If you need a portable drive, this should be on your short list.

Awesome Little Drive That's Blazing Fast

It's been years since I've bought external storage. I had a recent need for modern external storage and so many of the reviews and "top 10" lists led me to the Crucial X9 Pro. I don't have much experience with SSDs, so I was surprised to find this drive is about the size of 5 credit cards stacked on top of each other. And that surprise came even after seeing online pictures with the drive next to a laptop. This drive is super easy to attach, format, and use. It has blazing speed - transferring 4GB in about 90 seconds. It works flawlessly as an external drive for automatic back-ups. Given the capacity and speed, it's well worth the price, which is as good as or less than many competitors. I only have one minor quibble. The Mac formatted version of this drive is $20-40 more than the Windows formatted version (depending upon where you buy the drive). Given that it took less than two minutes to reformat the Windows version into a Mac version, I strongly recommend customers only purchase the Windows format. Do not pay the "Apple tax" that so many computer companies think they can charge the "rich" people who use Macs.

I’m happy with the size of this portable SSD drive, especially considering the high storage capacity. I ran a couple of speed tests and I was consistently getting over 1000MB/s read speed, and just under 1000MB/s for write speed which is expected and pretty dang good in my opinion. I recently switched computers and this was a great device to help move files, as well as storing backups and moving large video files around. One thing I was not impressed with is they advertise that this drive has password protection capabilities, almost heavily advertise it, but there is none currently. According to their site in fine print, you can use Windows Bitlocker Go to add encryption to your drive, which you can do with pretty much any standard USB drive, BUT you need to have Windows Pro which majority of home users don’t have. They do say they have their “Crucial Portable SSD Utility application for Windows and macOS launching September 2023” which is right around the corner, but not available as of this writing. The Crucial Storage Executive software does not seem to support this drive (yet) as I’ve tried 2 different computers to run it on but it only detects the onboard hard drives, but I’m not sure the software is designed to work with portable SSD’s or just regular SSD’s. I do like how this tiny drive is drop and splash proof, and lightweight, making it more convenient to carry around with you. It also carries a 5 year warranty, so you have a guarantee of 5 years of use…something you don’t see often with electronics. Crucial is a solid brand for memory and storage for many years, and I trust them with my data.

    Diminutive Performer

Unboxing the Crucial X9 Pro, you'll find the SSD, a 9” USB-C to USB-C cord, and some documentation. The drive itself is quite diminutive, measuring only 2.5” x 1.9375” x .375”. The upper body of the SSD, including the sides and top are metal, possibly aluminum, while the underside has a rubberized finish. In one corner there is a convenient spot to connect a key ring. The drive is NVMe based and comes pre-formatted in exFAT with a single partition. It is largely free of any bloat, with only a few shortcuts loaded that link to things like the website to register the SSD with Crucial or some free offers. I tested the drive on a Windows 10 machine, connected via USB-3 and using CrystalDiskMark. With this setup, I achieved read/write speeds of 1015 MB/s / 938 MB/s. The results were consistent across multiple runs. For comparison, a traditional USB-3 flash drive yielded speeds of only 156 MB/s / 80 MB/s…so the X9 Pro is a speedy performer. The X9 can also be connected to mobile devices. I tested it with a Pixel 6. While it did work, the Pixel did require me to reformat the drive before it would connect. It still formatted it with exFAT, so I’m not exactly sure why it needed to reformat. A couple of other observations. There is a status LED hidden inside the keyring loop, which is nice. Also, the X9 Pro is rated for IP55 water and dust resistance; so its safe getting splashed, but not submerged. All in all, the Crucial X9 Pro SSD is a conveniently sized drive that performs well.

    Speedy portable mass storage

✅ Need to store a lot of data? ✅ Need it to be portable? ✅ Need it to be fast? Photos and footage are a hallmark of modern life, and some of us take a lot of it; in high frame rate, in high resolution, and sometimes you have to move it from one device to another for post production editing or just to share and/or collaborate with others. For me it’s primarily 4k+ drone video and actioncam video that I’m dealing with and for storing and throwing around those large files the Crucial X9 has been a game changer. My original intent was to use the Crucial X9 as intermediary storage, to transfer large files from one system to another as needed, but after I experienced the Crucial X9 firsthand (greater than 800MB/s xfer is common for large contiguous data blobs) it’s honestly fast enough that I often end up doing a lot of my post production work directly from the X9. And, at 2TB, there’s enough room for holding multiple full projects simultaneously. I’ve long used external laptop SSDs in a similar role but they’ve never been this fast or this compact. The physical size is perfect for keeping handy in my pocket or for throwing in a bag, and it’s sturdy enough I don’t worry about damaging it. It is plastic so I expect it’ll pick up scraps and scratches over time but nothing I’d expect to interfere with its function. As a complement to my drones and cameras it’s a welcome and capable one-stop-storage-shop to aggregate photos and footage between events.

I've had the Crucial X9 Pro 2TB External SSD for almost 2 months and I’m honestly blown away. For starters, the speed is insane—this thing can hit up to 2000MB/s for read and write, which means transferring huge files or running apps directly from the drive is super fast. Whether you're moving videos, photos, or big project files, it handles everything without breaking a sweat. Plus, it’s USB-C, so it works with most modern devices, and the sleek Space Gray design looks great. The build feels solid too, with a durable aluminum casing that adds a bit of extra protection while still looking sharp. What really sold me on this, though, was the price—especially with the sale when I purchased, it feels like a steal. You're getting 2TB of super-fast storage that’s compact and lightweight, so it's perfect for tossing in your bag or taking on the go. It’s also tough enough to survive the occasional bump or drop. Considering how much this drive packs into such a portable and affordable package, I’d definitely recommend it to anyone who needs fast, reliable storage without spending a ton.

    Very small, speeds as advertised

This is very small, at about 2.5" by 2" and very thin. The top shell is metallic and the bottom is rubberized. It comes with a short USB-C cable. A small opening on one of the sides can be used to attach a lanyard or similar, and the inside of that part lights up white (it's an activity light, flashing according to use). Measured with Aja system test on an M1 MBP, it writes and reads at about the advertised speed of 1K MB/s, which is about the speed of the USB-C 10G port. Note that Crucial launched the X9 Pro and similarly sized X10 Pro. The main difference is speed, where the X10 supports USB-C 20G port instead so the SSD can work much faster. I'm using the 2TB SSD as a 'Time Machine' backup so I prioritized size rather than speed, so this is where the X9 comes in. The box has a QR code that makes registration very quick, and does not come with any pre-loaded software, but it does come with a link for a 1-month for Adobe Creative Cloud. It comes with a 5-year warranty and it's made in Thailand. Also water-resistant. Overall, it's a fantastic portable SSD. Micron (Crucial's parent company) is one of the largest memory makers, and this is made directly by them.

At just over an ounce, the Crucial X9 pro slips easily into your pocket, backpack or camera bag. You can even attach it to your key ring to keep it handy. Unlike some other portable SSD’s I’ve got, the drive ships with just a short USB C to USB C cable, keep this in mind if your device doesn’t have USB C. I like that the bottom of the drive has a slight rubber coating so it doesn’t slide around on the desk. I also really like the location and brightness of the activity light which is located inside the cutout for a lanyard or keyring. It is IP55 rated for water, dust and sand resistance. It is not however waterproof. The X9 has a rated speed of 1050 MB/s however, my test got a respectable 850 and 900, similar to my T7 Shield. I had no trouble editing photos and handling light video work directly from the drive. The X9 was recognized by all my devices including my iPad and worked flawlessly. If I had one desire, it would be nice that the X9 came with a built-in USB C plug so you don’t have to carry two pieces with you. If you are looking for a compact SSD storage solution I highly recommend the Crucial X9 Pro SSD.

The 2TB of storage is great for large files and in such a small package the X9 Pro can easily fit in any pocket. I used the required USB Gen 3.2 USB-C ports on my laptop and both transferred two mp4 files @ around 2GB each in about 10 seconds. Not much more to say about using it as it does what you want an external drive to do. I have not tried any of the trial-software it comes with, so I cannot comment on any of it, but it doesn't have anything to do with the use of the drive. The design/build quality is pretty good, it will definitely stand up to a being thrown around in a bag and/or on a key ring if one would want to do that. The advertised read/write speed is 1050mbps and it hits pretty close to that running the below test. I used EaseUS Diskmark to run a sample, these are the results of the 1GB sample size with 1MB blocks. Sequential Read Random Read Sequential Write Random Write Speed (MB/s) 957.82 942.05 818.90 766.74 IOPS (Times/s) 913 898 780 731 Delay (ms) 17.255 17.200 20.432 21.827 The craziest thing was the shipping box for the product size...photo included.
