    Dances with Wolves is a great film. it is not only great as a period film, capturing the beauty, challenge, and loneliness of Great Plains settlement life. in its depiction of primitive, tribal life of Native Americans during this period and their interactions with various groups of Whites (poachers, military, settlers), it vividly depicts the complexities of "progress" as it moved west. it is also an even deeper story of human identity and isolation vs. community, it explores the true nature of human "savagery", and tells a wonderful story of love and friendship across cultural barriers. this edition of the film is wonderful. it contains extended and additional scenes incorporated into the film itself. accompanying the film are also "making of" featurettes and a retrospective that includes great interviews with the cast and film creators.
