A movie shot so well, you can smell the diesel fuel... and the unwashed soldiers. Does not make war romantic, makes it dirty, frightening and tragic. Extremely well directed movie.

Simply a great movie edge of your seat suspense hands down

One of the greatest of World War II movies and certainly the best and most realistic submarine films ever, "Das Boot" is also an amazing technical feat also. The cramped, dank & claustrophobic setting of a WWII German U-boat is completely realized in the set design and Petersen's direction of the camera and great ensemble. Jurgen Prochnow gives a incisive performance as the beleaguered Captain. The PQ & AQ are very good, if not great. This was originally a mini-series for German TV (catch to full thing if you can.) I justwish that there were more extras.

I think this is an excellent movie. It shows some of the dangers and hardships of submariners...only this film shows it from the German side in WWII. It struck me that whatever side they were fighting for, the men faced similar obstacles. It was also a real insight to life on a submarine during wartime. I know that U.S. servicemen faced the same things. People are the same all over is what I took from this film.

I defy anyone who sees this movie on the big screen to not be completely captivated and emotionally drained by the end. This movie hardly needs subtitles. The cinematography is superb, so much so that you forget you are in a theater watching it. You feel the claustrophobia, smell the sweat, smell the fear, feel the relief and elation and then the utter senselessness of it all. Probably the best movie I've ever seen. Certainly the best war movie ever made.

This movie is not recent, but yet does make an impact on what WWII did to so many persons. The German perspective on submarine warfare is a very unique twist from the typical war movies that most of us have seen. I thoroughly enjoyed the fact that it was in German (although I don't speak it) and had the English subtitles. The realism of the submarine environment was exceptional. Great movie!!

I think this is a great war film, especially since it depicts a German point of view. Considering when it was made, it has set standards for realism, especially the depth charging sequences. Great attention to detail. I love the scenes showing all the provisions packed in every nook and cranny.

This is one of the all time classic thrillers. A great movie that explores the depths of human limits. Without Das Boot we never would have had Hunt for Red October, Crimson Tide or any of the other fine submarine films that came after it.

This movie is considered a classic, and a must see for WWII movie fans. Although the story is told through the eyes of the enemy, the issues they face or common to all soldiers, especially submariners.

I enjoyed my VCR version for years but when I found it on Blue-Ray, it was a must own. Now that we've got high-def, this makes the movie that much better. I know I'm impressed. Here's hoping you are too.

Great movie and Blu-ray is worth the few extra dollars. You can actually watch the movie with subtitles in about a dozen languages.

This is absolutely the best submarine movie made. Realistic movie that gives you insight into the silent service, circa WW2, and from the German perspective!!
