This is one of those horror-films that could have been awesome, but instead ends up being "just" being good. The plot goes; Jamie Ashen and his girlfriend one night receive a relatively spooky ventriloquist doll named "Billy" in a crate delivered anonymously at their door. Ashen goes out to get them some food, wondering who sent the doll to them and why. As he returns, he finds his girlfriend dead, missing her tongue. After being released from custody for lack of evidence against him, Ashen travels back to his home town for the funeral and finds out that the doll used to belong to "Mary Shaw", a former fellow townswoman of his. She was murdered by several of the townspeople for what they believed to be her murderous nature back in the day after one of her ventriloquist shows where a boy went missing shortly afterwards heckling Mary Shaw. The legend is that the ghost of Mary Shaw, along with her dolls, are killing off the townspeople related to her murderers, but only if you scream when you see her. Ashen henceforth attempts to solve the mystery of who is doing the killing and why. That is about as much as I'll say about the plot, but it is a fine film of suspense, with the welcome addition of Donnie Wahlberg in the cast as the detective suspecting Ashen of the murder(s). Sadly, Wahlberg doesn't get much to act with; mostly he is just being a quite foolish detective and shaving his chin. Ryan Kwanten playing Jamie Ashen is perhaps a bit out of his league here, but considering what I've seen from him on the "True Blood"-show, he's probably grown as an actor since this film was made. The film reminds one in many ways of both "Jeepers Creepers" and "Darkness Falls", so if you liked those, you will probably like this as well. No big flaw in the film, and a quite nice story and a wonderful ending that you probably won't see coming before you sit there going "ahhh, of course" as the end credits pass your eyes. Recommended if you're into the genre, but be aware that it is of course quite violent. The film scared a friend of mine so bad that he had to get the DVD out of the house, if that is anything to go by. 4,5 stars and the added bonus of a more or less all-European cast.

My wife and I absolutely love this movie! This is a great horror flick by writer/ director James Wan (Death Sentence and the Saw series). Ignore the previous review by the guy that said he only watched 30 minutes of the film and didn't like it. Obviously, he doesn't know the meaning of the word 'review'! You can't write a review on a film you didn't even watch?! Besides, that guy probably doesn't even like horror movies. If you do like horror movies, I don't see how you couldn't like this film. It's got thrills, chills, great intensity, and a great plot. It's kind of a mix between Darkness Falls, Boogeyman, and Puppet Master. (Plus, I think dolls are just creepy in general.) So, I highly recommend this movie! You can't go wrong with James Wan, he obviously has a good resume. And if you haven't seen Death Sentence, you should.

Dead Silence, A Terrifying Horror Story

The creators of the controversial blockbuster "Saw" have brought us a modern masterpiece of gothic horror. In the tradition of "Darkness Falls" and "The Ring," another urban legend has been given the big screen treatment. "Dead Silence" involves an elderly, childless ventriloquist named Mary Shaw who is accused of causing the disappearance of a boy from a wealthy family. The townsmen cut out her tongue and murder her. She is buried along with her massive collection of ventriloquist dummies. Soon after, entire families are found murdered with their tongues ripped out. Legend has it that if you see her ghost and scream, you will have your tongue ripped out. Great performances, a creepy atmosphere of decay and desolation, and a good musical score make "Dead Silence" a must see for fans of gothic horror. I promise that you will never be able to look again at a ventriloquist dummy without shivering.

dead silence is a very good horror film the only down side to the film is it's ending but other than that is is good film from the people that made the saw films this movie would have gotten five stars but the ending felt rush but every other part is very good and it has some good spooky scenes in it and the blu-ray looks and sounds alot better than the dvd and it has all the extras that was on the dvd so it is well worth picking up and plus it is the unrated version

I only watched half an hour of the movie I couldn't be any more bored with a movie. It's just terrible let's put it that way.None of the actors leave you feeling nothing for them or the danger their in.Didn't need to see the whole thing thru I was just bored from the beginning.

I thought it would be a good movie, since they had two from the Saw series making the movie, but sadly it didn't help at all. This movie was weak version of the late 90's series Puppet Masters.
