A good story told to better understand the events that took place on the oil rig on April 2010. It's lead with a all-star cast ...

DEEPWATER HORIZON is about the tragic disaster that took place on the oil rig, 50 miles off the coast of Louisiana, that resulted in deaths and the largest oil spill ever. This film takes a very docu-verite approach to telling the story. While the movie does overindulge a bit in cliches, it also works pretty well as a procedural look at how an oil rig is run, day-to-day. That aspect was fascinating to me. So if you don't mind some corny dialogue and some cheezy exposition, the film will give you a pretty interesting and also harrowing look at what its like to be an oil rig worker. In the 2nd half, the disaster strikes and the movie becomes like Titanic, showing moment-by-moment what happened and how the crew was either rescued or perished. The FX are pretty exciting and bombastic, but the events are tragic. Director Peter Berg imbues the movie with a very patriotic messages about American workers and American idustry, portraying them as heroes. If you are a communist, this will probably irk you. Otherwise, this is a pretty straight-forward disaster movie, with a high production level. The Blu-Ray comes with TONS of extras, including an entire 5-part documentary about the incident. It is quite exhaustive, you will learn everything you can about the movie, the ship, the crew, and the disaster. The disc definitely packs in the extras for a decent price. Also comes with a nice glossy slipcover.
