I wish I would have never bought anything from this brand… the west performance, zero reliability. SMH always something not working properly, along with terrible Bluetooth distance

Jeez, this beast is amazing. The sound bar is very sleek with a shiny elegant design. Wireless subwoofer is quite heavy like the Bose module.
The quality of sound is perfection and travels around the room as if there were additional sets of speakers positioned along the back walls. Every tone comes through the device flawlessly. The voices are crisp and clear without being overpowered by the booming background music and explosive tones. We were thrilled with that, and is due to the center channel isolating the voices from the other three.
Setup is quite simple and easy using google home app. Music can be chromecasted from different apps - google music, pandora, YouTube, etc., to the speaker after setup.
Sound quality is just amazing! The adjustable bass of the wireless woofer using the remote is a really good feature. This bar works great with our Samsung Smart TV and I'm pretty sure it works well with others. Once the sound is set up to your liking by the included remote, that can be stored away. All functions work cohesively with the TV remote. The unit wirelessly communicates to the televisions remote, automatically setting itself up without having to enter codes and numbers. That was a treat to discover.
The front lights displays volume level, sound mode - Movie, music and night. The night mode displays lights in pink. The lights also turns on for a few seconds when volume changes, bass alterations, input switches, and other various functions are being made, and then shuts off so not to be distracting while viewing the television. This unit was well thought out.
I would definitely recommend this to my friends.

So must of us in our extra rooms where we never intended to have a TV, now have one. So we suffer from having just the basic sound out of the tiny speakers on the TV... don’t do that anymore
Get deep rich and inclusive sounds that will rival many traditional stereo systems
Easy to setup, even for complicated setups. Every modern connector is included. Even the advanced HDMI with ARC which is a major plus for those that need it
Watch your Netflix movies, and your Hulu content. Crank up the music and have a party
The separate subwoofer packs a deep punch and adds the fullness to the sound that so many systems are missing
If you don’t have the room for a 7.2.1 Dolby Atmos, or the budget. You won’t go wrong by adding this sound bar system

Just awesome. This soundbar and subwoofer sound phenomenal. If you close your eyes and listen, you'd think this was a full blown home theater system. I have watched some action flicks and played some music. It handles all very well. The treble and mid range is very full yet not to overpowering. The bass is on point. Very tight and hits deep. The video and HDMI pass through are great. Played my 4K Blu rays in HDR with no issues. The bluetooth connects quickly and keeps a good connection, no cutting in and out or poor audio. It fits great in small spaces, like my bedroom. Definitive Technology has done it again. Excellent product. Definitely a must have for anyone is the market for a soundbar.

I am in love with the sound of the Studio Slim! Massive amounts of bass and sparkling clear highs have far exceeded my expectations. While not what I’d technically classify as “slim” the soundbar’s clean lines and minimalistic design blends amazingly well and practically disappears once in place. The bass module is fairly large but not unwieldy and also blends in so well you almost forget it’s there...until you fire it up.
The setup had the normal pains of using Google Home and the requirement to have to go through that before the unit is fully functional was an unwelcomed surprise and it seems like an unnecessary design decision. (On a side note, I am not a user of Google Home or Chromecast and don't intend to change that in the near future based on experiences I've had setting up devices in friends and family members homes. I don't like being forced to sign up for a service just to use a product.) Once through that process, a couple of other drawbacks showed up.
First, I cannot use my Xfinity remote to control the Studio Slim as I could with the last two soundbars I have used. Major bummer to have to use 2 remotes just to get to basic functions like volume (my TV does not have ARC).
Next, the included remote is well-designed but isn’t backlit and doesn’t include all functions (like switching to a Bluetooth source which requires a button push on the soundbar itself, which is yet another pain). Bluetooth pairing is relatively easy but don’t expect seamless integration with Alexa devices as the connection is spotty and often requires resetting either the Alexa unit or the soundbar to fix connection issues. I'm guessing this is because of the close integration with Google services but have no way of confirming that.
As far as I have been able to find, there is no setting to power on the unit when a Bluetooth connection is initiated (I have been able to do this for several years with soundbars from other manufacturers).
Finally, the minimalist design makes it difficult, if not impossible to know whether the unit is on or what input is selected without pressing a button on the remote because the small indicator lights “time-out” very quickly.
While my gripes and frustrations with the Studio Slim are relatively minor inconveniences individually, when added together, they do take away from the everyday ease of use. The impressive sound quality is great, but it seems like Definitive took a break when it came to user-friendliness.

I am blown away by the amazement of the sound bar. The base is unreal The controls are amazing set up through Google home was even cooler, I want to buy another one just to open it. The sound the sound quality and the audio return channel from my TV's HDMI 3 is awesome. It 's worth more way more than what they're charging.

My first observations taking it out of the box were, that it was well packaged and although it is advertised as slim, it wasn't necessarily slimmer than other sound bars. It was slightly smaller but not enough for me to call it slim.
Set up was kinda a pain, Google and I both had issues. Google home had an issue after the first update. It said "it took to long to update" and didn't register the soundbar. 30 minutes later, the issue cleared itself. Once I got past that, I had an issue getting the HDMI arc or even regular HDMI to work. After an hour of troubleshooting, I finally gave up and used the optical connection, which immediately worked. In the box was a phone number for free tech support however, at this price it should just be plug and play.
I then began to test the different audio sources.I tested the audio with Spotify, Youtube music videos, Netflix movies and Blueray movies. Music videos and spotify did sound good but movies were disappointing. Movies with music felt flat and action movies did not feel immersive.
With all that being said, I expected the performance to be premium and at most the performance was on par with any other standard soundbar on the market.

Smooth Looking and Awesome Sound

This is a product that is worth the higher price. For starters, the packaging is awesome and ensures the device will not be damaged in shipment. Often products arrive bouncing around in a box but not this one, so that was great.
You will notice that all the cables are provided so there is no need to rush out to get any type of cable such as the optical audio cable. I used an TV which did not have the HDMI ARC level port. This is found on newer smart TV’s so that the audio gets sent to the receiver/sound bar for an improvement in sound quality. HDMI ARC can allow for one remote to turn on everything in a system including your sound bar – that’s handy. So the manual will ask you to use an HDMI ARC port if there is one. However if you don’t have one an optical cable is included and I noticed this also turns on this sound bar – the sound over the optical cable is fantastic. You’ll notice little rubber dust shields where you connect the optical cable to your TV and also to the sound bar. The connector areas on the sound bar are slightly tilted which makes it easier to plug your connectors – a small detail but very important to ensure you can easily plug the connectors – good thinking by some engineer and just another indicator that this is a top level product all the way from the excellent sound to the little design points.
The install was easy. I noticed that the engineers and programmers for this device are a very smart crew – for example the bass woofer which is a separate box connects via Bluetooth to the main sound bar, so there is no cable needed. They also provide a handy light on the back of the woofer to show you it is connected – green if good, orange if not connected. The electronics does all the work for you, just set up your system and it will connect the woofer ‘automagically’.
Also the design is very ‘understated’ for example as you raise or lower the volumes little LED’s will show you the level. Each LED has multiple intensity levels to show the loudness which keeps the design clean.
The sound is wonderful. You do need to turn your TV speakers off. Don’t be tempted to leave them on when using a sound bar – it creates a muddled sound. Go to the TV’s menu and turn the TV audio off, it is not a good idea to just mute the TV audio as it gets cumbersome to keep turning it down or off.
The sound is so crisp and precise that you will not be tempted to use your TV speaker – just absolutely fabulous – which is the main reason you buy the product. The slim design blends in well and actually I often don’t even see the sound bar. The instructions say the woofer should be placed in a corner but I found no difference with just placing on the floor next to your TV stand. You do get a remote which handles main functions including how much bass and also it has a button to ‘center’ the audio – great thinking i.e. simple yet gives you all the adjustments you need.
You can also use Chromecast to send audio and video to this soundbar by using the Google Home app. I will tell you that using this soundbar to hear your Google Music casted from your cell phone will blow you away.
I highly recommend this product for it’s powerful and pure sound and also for the overall simple design where the electronics does the complicated stuff for you, which takes great programming and great hardware.

Great Sound. When it works.

Have had the sound bar for about a year and was very happy with it. Set up isn't just plug and play since you have to use Google Home to get it work. At first it would not pair with my Xfinity remote but it did with the TV remote. Eventually got that sorted out so the Xfinity remote worked.
Sound bar randomly stopped working about a month ago and gave me blinking lights of death. Google Home no longer could connect to it. Called DT's customer service and the first rep was very helpful. Explained the issue and he promptly sent me a new bar and it arrived in about a week.
Got the new bar hooked up and it lasted 2 days before it died in the same way the first one did. Last customer service reps were less helpful. First one just suggested the HDMI cable might be bad and I should switch to the optical cable. How does that help the connectivity issue to WiFi? Called again and got someone else who opened a service tag for it but hasn't committed to sending me a new bar yet.
Third time is the charm? Where's the "maybe" recommendation option?

Do Not Buy. Won’t last. Terrible customer service

We bought this (studio micro — previous version) and the speaker stopped working within two years. After a few calls to customer service, they replaced it free of charge. Then about a year and a half later, the replacement stopped working. So for $800, I had a great sound system (yes, it does sound great) for less than 4 years. Definitive Technology now outsources its customer service to a company that is undertrained and overwhelmed. They repeatedly emailed us updates to try, apps to download (and later tell us to delete), etc. They even told me I needed a stronger modem/router, so I purchased a Nighthawk and it didn’t help. I spent hours waiting on hold, only to be told they would call me back, but then the callbacks never came. I finally took it to a local service place, and they told me the amp was blown. Not fixable. We’re middle aged and have young kids. We don’t turn the volume up very high.
If you want a unit that sounds great, but won’t last 4 years, this is your product. Otherwise, steer clear. Sad to see a great company falling due to customer service and not caring about their customers.

Good TV soundbar; Terrible chromecast speaker
Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
I bought this for 2 reasons: better sound for my TV & use as part of my whole-house chromecast speaker system.
This checks the boxes I have for TV soundbar:
+ wireless subwoofer
+ no satellites (I don’t have a spouse-approved place for them)
+ no Dolby Atmos (I have a vaulted ceiling)
+ HDMI ARC
+ great improvement in sound quality beyond TV’s speakers
As a chromecast speaker, it fails badly. Google Home, YouTube music, etc only “see” the soundbar right after rebooting the speaker. Not that rebooting is that great and convenient work around in general, unplugging the soundbar isn’t especially easy on top of that. Further, the soundbar will not reliably work in Google Home “speaker groups” to play with other Home speakers.
Side note on quality and BestBuy customer service: I was able to quickly and easily exchange my soundbar after my first one would not work with HDMI ARC. The second one’s HDMI ARC works great.

Complicated connections and bad audio lag

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
My salesman upgraded me to this sound bar because of a delivery issue. While I appreciated his kindness, it was not the best gift. It took several visits from geek squad to get the speaker to work with my Sony Bravia. Even then, the subwoofer barely worked. Now there’s this really annoying audio lag, even when using the HDMI cable. Watching TV using the sound bar is like watching a foreign language movie that has been dubbed into English. Definitive Technologies support is non-existent and its website has no useful information to correct the audio lag issue. I am very glad I didn’t pay full price for this speaker. I’m probably going to give it away for a tax deduction and buy something else.

Great Sound, When it Works
Posted .

I hate this thing. The only reason it's getting two stars is because when it stays powered-on and playing, it actually sounds really good. The rest of the time, it's busy losing its connection to the wireless network and resetting each time it does so. If you try to pair it with the Definitive W7s (good luck with that, btw), there's a really good chance you'll screw something up in the soundbar itself causing it to reboot intermittently even when disconnected from wireless and operating independently. Definitive sent a replacement for my original unit and I still can't get this one to work consistently. Avoid this, and spend a little extra to buy Sonos or something.

DO NOT BUY
Subwoofer would sometimes lose connections to the sound bar and then 11 months after purchase the Sub just bricked itself. It won't turn on. I've submitted service tickets and tried to call many times. They are not responding nor answering the phones. When it worked, it sounded great. But I can't recommend a product that seemingly has no service, even when it WAS under warranty. Look elsewhere.

I've had it for 3 weeks. Was working great until I used it to listen to music from my phone through Bluetooth. Now when I watch tv, the background music and noises are much louder than voices. No adjustments, unplugging, resetting, do anything. Contacting customer service is impossible. It's headed to the dump.

Like a few others, our soundbar lasted a little over a year before crapping out. When I went into Best Buy, I purchased this sound bar along with a brand new TV, Apple TV, etc. We asked for extended warranty on all of our items. Of course, when we showed up with our broken sound bar we found out that they didn't give us the extended warranty. My fault for not double checking the receipt but it still doesn't excuse the fact that this expensive stuff only lasts a year. Best Buy & DT have been completely unhelpful with trying to get our items repaired... so looks like I am stuck with a $1300 piece of garbage. Save your money people!!
