We were in the market for a pair of Wi-Fi speakers. Never had any before. Had a pair of hardware 90's-era Hi-Fi Pioneers—beauties. But, they got mad busted yo, so we picked these up.
We got these babies home, unwrapped and plugged them in. Pulled out a smartphone and the laptop, downloaded the app. Set up took about 1 minute. Within the time span of 5 minutes of walking in the door, we had streamed music, downloaded music and random internet-nal nonsense pumping through these muthas.
They sounded 100% fantastic. Reverb tails. Spatial distribution. Actual low-end you could both feel and hear. Warmth emitting like an electric blanket out of this tiny little box. It is loud as you ever need. If you need it louder, just take it with you.
I didn't trust a Wi-Fi speaker, I figured they'd be no gouda. I was wrong. I know nothing. These are simply incredible. We sat and cranked audio majestic-ness for two hours straight. I love this speaker. That's right one speaker. So loud. So good.

Great sound; poor wifi

Purchased 2 W7's and the W9. The Sound is fantastic, however, the wifi connection and app are unreliable. The reason I purchased was to have the ability to quickly send music to various combinations of speakers in the house. Problem 1: A speaker can only be in 1 group at a time. So, if I want different combinations, I have to delete and rebuild a group each time. Problem 2: Speakers dropped off the network every time I used them and required 2-5 minutes of opening, closing, and restarting the app. It was never the same speaker from problem-to-problem. The bottom line for me is that if I can't have music playing within 1 minute of opening the app, then I'm out. Didn't read about these problems on best buy review; however, I see it frequently on the DT app review. I returned them.

This device is poorly engineered. The sound is ok but the software and phone app is really junk, primitive in design and very user unfriendly. My internet signal is strong and steady, the router relatively new but no matter, the device often drops wifi. And now it won't even turn on. Support is useless. Try calling. For an audio company their support audio is pathetic. Don't buy this product. Do yourself a favor. Save your money.

Big Disappointment

I am a huge Def Tech fan and consumer. My home theater is built around Mythos ST-L, CS9080 center and surrounds, and dual SuperCube 6000s. Even our guest rooms have Mythos SSA-50s. I read the reviews out of curiosity, but I was already set on getting the W9 because I thought the sound would be similar to what I already own and love. I was wrong. The W9 lacks tremendously is the 4k-20k range. The guitar solos sounds muddled, the cymbal and high hat hits are almost none existent. I have listened to it now for about 6 hours hoping the speaker needed a burn in, but it didn't get better. After further investigation I noticed Def Tech doesn't list a frequency response on the W9 spect sheet. After listening to the W9, there is a reason for this. I gave it 2 stars because the Def Tech app I downloaded to set this up was easy and straightforward and the design of the W9 is nice. If the review was only about sound quality I would not hesitate on giving this a 1 star.

Definitive Technology Terrible Products/Terrible C

Purchased W9 for $600 in 2018. It no longer works at all. Called Definitive Tech customer service and received no help. I also noticed that there are many reviews that show their speakers die after only 2 years. No sure why Best Buy sells electronics from a company with such poor quality and customer service.

4 / 8 failed after 1 yr; Great Sound if They Work

Definitive Technology - W9 Dual 5-1/4" 180W 2-Way Wireless Speaker (Each) for Streaming Music makes Killer Sound! I bought 8 as they would eventually go on clearance at Best Buy. I bought each new, factory sealed in the manufacturer's box.
Now I know why they went on clearance. 4 out of my 8 failed after about 1 year; I did not play them loud; they were serving as background music for a whole house system.
Failures were primarily with the interface & one amplifier failed. Fortunately I had purchased Geek Squad Protection & Best Buy came through.
If you find any for sale, buy the Geek Squad Protection & Good Luck!
NOT RECOMMENDED.

The speaker died after 3 years. The manf has ignored my contacting them. The sound was excellent until it died. It was always plugged into a surge protector.

I bought a W9 in Dec. of 2016. Today the unit just quit. I called Definitive Technology and was met with "sorry, out of warranty". I purchased a 2 year extended warranty from Best Buy. So with the 1 year warranty from the manufacturer and 2 from BB I figured I had 3 years covered. Wrong. The BB warranty started the day It was purchased, or so I was told by Geek Squad. Bottom line, Sonos seems to have an out of warranty policy. Def Tech won't even repair their unit. Spend your $600 elsewhere.
