i recently bought a Lenovo IdeaCentre all in one and there is a DVD on it BUT the burner wasnt working as it should .. i have protection BUT i am disabled and couldnt easily get the computer back to the store because BB should have fixed it for free - I actually ordered an external DVD player from another company because i had a deal and it got here and didnt work so i returned it and purchased this from BB instead ... I received it today - plugged it in and it works perfectly .. I hope i can continue to say that a few months from now but i have protection on this little doohickey too which would be easy to return to the store it was worth it to me not to stress about BB keeping my computer for 3-5 days to install a new burner and be without a computer ... I would highly recommend this Dell burner its perfect and i cant believe lots of computer nowadays dont have DVD/CDs in them ... my friend bought a small tower a weird shape ... it was cute but there is no DVD/CD on it and so many laptops dont have them either ... so this is perfect for that reason

Long gone are the days when manufacturers put extra devices in laptops. There's no blame - most of the programs that are purchased are available online for download and installation. Every once in a great while, there's something that requires installation from DVD, and it appears that I have every object that requires computer control/interface that does not come with downloadable software. This works fine. It occasionally doesn't want to communicate with the computer, necessitating removal of the USB cable and reinsertion. It's loud, and it reminds me of an old 5 1/4 inch drive searching around for the software leprechaun. It seems a little slow, but that may be relative as we live in an era of SSD and internet connections that are in the hundreds of mbps. It's an OK drive. It does it's job, but there might be better ones out there.

Good DVD drive, no good DVD player

I purchased a new Dell Inspiron laptop with Windows 10, and as most new laptops it didn’t include a DVD drive. I purchased this external USB drive, plugged it in to a USP port and voila, the computer recognizes the DVD drive. Then I inserted the included DVD and installed its software, which just happens to include DVD player software. Installation went smoothly. Long story short... The external drive was able to read and run the included software DVD, but was unable to play a new out-of-the-box DVD movie. I was able to watch the movie on a Sony DVD player connected to a Sony TV; so the problem wasn’t the media. Who to blame? Maybe Windows 10, maybe the DVD drive.

I bought the Dell USB DVD drive because my laptop doesn't have a DVD drive AND this drive was on sale. This drive is small enough to fit in the carrying case of my laptop, and its weight is nearly negligible. The drive works as it should without any issues. The color is unobtrusive, and the build quality seems to be on par with most of Dell's products. The nice thing about this drive is that it doesn't need an external power supply. It draws power from the USB port. Having this USB DVD drive with me gives the flexibility of watching a movie on a DVD or recording data to a disc for use elsewhere. The fact that it weighs so little makes it easy to keep in the bag all the time.

    Not good for tablets

I purchased two Insignia tablets, one was an 8", the other 11.6". I needed to load data from a CD onto them for work so I purchased this device. The drive would show up in the list until I put a CD in it, then it would disappear from the list and the drive would sit there making a grinding sound and almost lock the tablet up. This was with both tablets. I then attached it to three laptops and 2 desktops and it worked perfectly with all of those. My conclusion is that the USB ports of the tablets cannot provide the power necessary for the drive to work. Since it can't work with the tablets I got, I returned this item. It would probably be great for a laptop or similar that doesn't have an optical reader, I think. But it doesn't appear to be good for tablets.

I'd purchased another brand of external drive from a different retailer. About a day later, I thought the price seemed high and checked Best Buy. They had two makes for three-quarters the price of the one I originally bought ... so back it went and I went to Best Buy. This one was not on the shelf, but some rummaging by an assistant in the back room found two of them. This Dell is in a much more robust case than the make I originally purchased, only uses one USB port for power and connection rather than two on the other, and I like the black color much better than the other one's "putty."

I know in this day and age no one uses optical drives anymore but I am a person who still uses CDs because it's another source of data back up because hard drives and ssd's can still fail when saving data so I decided to buy an external dvd burner to continue to copy data on to CDs. This drive works just like any other optical drive but keep in mind this external USB dvd burner uses 2.0 speeds so it's a tiny bit slower compare to a regular SATA optical drive but it works just fine as it does what I need to do. I should add here this drive doesn't need a power adapter as the USB 2.0 cord powers it on when you connect it to your laptop.

I needed an external dvd/cd drive to load software I own onto my Surface Pro 4. After reviewing the info on available drives, I chose this one as a reasonably priced option for what I needed. It is lightweight & feels somewhat flimsy. However, despite being a little noisy and apparently freezing during one of my first attempts, the drive settled down & did it's job. It doesn't feel like a high end product but then it doesn't have a high end cost either. All in all, it did what I needed it to do without too much coaxing. A safe bet for moving already owned software to new systems that don't have a dvd/cd drive built in.

I was very hopeful that this Dell DVD player would be as outstanding as my Dell Inspiron 15 7000 laptap is, especially since the first external DVD player I purchased (Ultra Slim USB 3.0) proved to be defective and had to be returned. Sadly, the Dell DW316 External USB Slim DVD had the same problem -- a scratching noise every 1.2 seconds both when playing CD's and DVD's and on the copies of CD's that I burned. I wonder if they are manufactured by the same Chinese company? I have returned this item and will look for another external DVD unit .

This was a perfect purchase for a computer we were told did not have the drive to read disks. It was very quiet, created less sound and fewer vibrations than a previous reader and an internal laptop drive. Turns out our computer did have a disk drive but it was verticle and hidden. Using this on a computer or laptop that already has a drive caused no errors or miscommunication for us. I did not try running disks in both internal and external drives at the same time though. Saving this in the box for when I build my next computer.

This is an absolute essential. I purchased a new 2017 Dell Precision 5520 and it did not have a built-in optical drive. I however had a lot of content (including software) on DVD's and wanted to use/install them. This external drive is perfect and does what it says. I am very happy with this optical drive. It is slim enough to carry in my laptop bag and looks good too...

This unit was a temporary replacement for an internal optical drive that went bad while still under warranty. HP kept sending the wrong part so I needed a DVD drive in the interim. This Dell met my needs perfectly: USB, available immediately, inexpensive & functional. Plug & play out of the box, it was up and running in seconds and allowed me to keep working while I continued to be frustrated by HP. The Dell is a bit flimsy and a little awkward to open/close but otherwise is a great value. I am now happy to have both internal and external drives.

We had to buy this player to replace the internal DVD drive on our laptop after it completely broke down. Since most laptops do not come with the drives internally anymore, we figured we'd buy this one. It was relatively easy to set up, but I did find that I had to install the updated software from the disk that came with it to get it to work properly on our laptop. My wife has several DVDs from other regions that we were very happy to find that this drive would play without an issue!

I bought this instead of a really cheap version from a foreign company, and I'm glad I did. This disc drive is fragile enough as it is, and recoils a lot when opening the tray, so I can only imagine how bad the cheaper one would be. Thankfully everything runs fine. I've tried DVD's and CD's, as well as game discs and all have worked fine. It comes with a media installation disc so you needn't have to worry about not playing movies or anything like that. A bit expensive but if you really want to save internal computer space for other things, yet need CD's/DVD's badly, this is a great purchase.

I read the reviews of the various DVD external drives, and I selected this one because it was cheap. It works fine, once I get it up and running, but it doesn't automatically start, and I've had some problems in finding it on my computer after plugging it in. The video I watched was for children about multiplication, and I will say that we left off and started again another day and it picked up where we'd left off. It was slow in installing, and I have an i7 computer, so I don't think it was my computer. Otherwise, it'll be adequate for my needs.

I recently installed two new Dell computers at a friends place. They did not come with optical drives. They prefer Dell brand products. I purchased this so they could play videos on their desktop. This is a USB 2.0 device so I expect it to burn disks slower than a USB 3.x optical drive. Using the drive it does the job but feels a bit flimsy compared to the ASUS external optical drives I have purchased in the past at a similar price.

The DVD drive was very easy to use. I plugged it into the USB port and was able to rip some old CDs that I had so that I could place them on a USB for my car. I had been meaning to do this for awhile but I never really got around to it and the Dell that I have doesn't have a CD drive so this one worked out perfect to play and rip. I assume I could burn as well, but like I previously, mentioned, my car doesn't have a CD player.
