This laptop is a beast. Excellent on games, excellent on any other program you want to run. The screen is great and the computer runs super fast. I guess the only criticisms I could give it is that fan can be a bit loud when gaming and the speakers are not super loud. The sound is nice from them, they're just not very loud. Other than that absolutely excellent system.

    Great Casual Gaming Laptop

Couple of things. I am a very casual gamer. I have a full size desktop that is downstairs that doesn't get used much because I'm a stay at home dad and the baby stays upstairs. I have been searching high and low for something portable, that can game. With the bulk I don't know if it checks that box for me yet. Couple of really cool things about it. It comes with a 512GB NVME SSD which fills up fast with modern titles. Not to worry it has a 2.5" empty hard drive slot and comes with the caddy. The speakers are decent enough to not warrant "having" to wear headphones The display is 60Hz but colors are fine. (nothing looks washed out). Good enough for sitting at the kitchen island. RAM is upgrade-able which you will want to do as it is shared with the secondary Intel HD Graphics. Fans do run but they do a good job of keeping the keyboard and palmrest cool. iphone DB Meter registers at about 55 when sitting away from it at a normal distance. (with Forza running) Stupid Stuff: I like to do a vanilla windows install on new pcs. For whatever reason the PC isn't able to boot a rufus created windows install usb. I resorted to burning a DVD of 1903 and the system booted from the disc just fine. However after some crashes from a driver (I think) I did the same with an 1803 ISO installed the needed drivers from Dell and then did the update assistant to get to 1903 and now its stable. Benchmarks: Forza Horizon 4: Locked at 60Hz details set to high saw about 50% graphics card utilization GTA 5: very high detail preset fxaa off saw about 40-50 jumping up to the 80s in its benchmark. Geek Bench: Single-Core 4900 Multi-Core 16915 Cinebench R20: 1373 BF4: Campaign- High Settings 140FPS Multiplayer- 170FPS

Great Value Gaming Laptop with Nice Hardware

For the price, the Dell G3 / i5 / 8GB / 1660 Ti / 512GB laptop is a great value. I was pleasantly surprised by the build - although nearly entirely plastic, it felt fairly robust and not cheap feeling. The laptop isn’t the lightest around at around 6lbs, but is still portable enough that you can take it places without any huge strain. The design is nice as well from the iridescent Dell logo to the light blue accents on the outside. Overall a very elegant looking machine. It has vents on the bottom as well as the sides to keep it cool and do a great job at doing so, but when this thing starts humming with higher loads you will definitely hear it if you aren’t wearing a headset. Ports are good for the most part - a good variety with power, (1) USB-C, HDMI, (1) USB 3, ethernet, and headphones on the left. On the right is an SD card slot along with (2), wait for it, USB 2.0 ports. [grimmace face]. Seems like a strange decision. For “just” being an HD display, it was MUCH better than what I was expecting. Being only 1920 x 1080 at 15.6”, the clarity was quite good. I also own a MacBook Pro with a Retina display and comparing it side by side, yes, there absolutely is a difference but the Dell display is darn, darn good. Brightness was decent at 250 nits, I found the colors to be nice and robust, and color accuracy was acceptable. Speakers were OK, but I think this is an area that could use improvement as they sounded a bit hollow with very little to no low end. However, I really liked the full size keyboard with number pad. Good keystroke feel - nice and positive, not super noisy, while also not being mushy (I tend to prefer quieter keyboards). I think they hit a good balance. Also neat is the fact that it has blue backlighting. Trackpad was also quite good - accurate and predictable however I wish it wasn’t quite so far to the left as it’s off center which means that if you’re using it with your left hand, your palm may not fit entirely on the computer. Alternatively, if you are using your right hand, it has to come across the center line of the entire laptop. Gaming performance was where this thing did a great job. I mostly play racing games and found the framerates to be quite good but just note that performance takes a dive when not plugged in. Make sure to have it plugged in if you can. Also really like the fact that there is an empty hard drive slot which is probably necessary since this particular unit only came with a 512GB HD, but both the hard drive and RAM are easily upgradeable. This Dell G3 spec is a great buy. Great design, great display, nice keyboard and trackpad, and good gaming performance. My two complaints would be the USB 2.0 ports rather than 3.0 (this is the main reason I only did 4 stars - wish I could do 4.5) as well as the speakers that could be better, but overall, this is a solid machine for the money.

This laptop runs great since it has very recent revisions for its hardware specs. Only comes with 1 SSD though, so you need to keep on top of cleaning out Windows files to save space. With the Intel Turbo Boost on, you can almost double the speed of the processor, but it runs extremely hot when it is on, even when the extra speed is not even needed or really used. I turned it off and it runs much cooler. I would still recommend a 20-30 dollar cooling pad, even with the boost off, to extend the life of the machine as well. Not sure if its RAM can be expanded, but 8 GB seems to work fine for now.

So far, I have not any issues with the laptop. It is a little bit heavy, but so was my last gaming laptop. Nice upgrade from my 13 year old laptop. I like being able to cast to my TV with it. Games play well. Nice screen also. I would not have bought it for $999 but since it was on sale for close to $700, I thought it was a good deal.

    A Waste of $1,000

This laptop barely lasted a full calendar year before the hinge decided to break. My laptop stayed at my desk, open, for the majority of the time and one day I close it and it was misaligned and eventually just broke all together. This seems to be factory issue with this model but you would think this would be solved by now. Spending $1,000 on this was a waste. Don't get me started on the battery life, even if you're not gaming and on power save mode, at best, you get like 2 hours (that's being very generous). And the fans? Awful. This laptop will start burning up using Zoom so you can only imagine when I'm trying to play a game like Monster Hunter World. I don't recommend this to anyone. Go spend that $1,000 on anything else. Dell's customer service is awful and I'm left with a laptop that I spent $1000 on and will have to learn how to fix myself. Never again. This laptop is garbage.

Real cool computer. I don't have anything bad to say about it so far. Has a real sleek look, no issues with performance since I do a good amount of CADD Drafting, and being that it is my first gaming laptop/pc it is a really good startup at a decent price....

Got this G3 a year ago. My first Windows PC in years. Battery life is not good. It's a gaming laptop but I haven't gamed on it much. Materials feel somewhat low quality but quantity of hardware is great. Lots of ports which is what I needed. Super fast startup and nice display. Functions well for general needs. I wish the backlight of the keyboard would stay on longer though. Try to get this laptop if it's less than $900.

Got this laptop on sale for $700. Well worth that price on my opinion. So far it runs every game I have butter smooth with the most demanding being Doom 2016 and Fallout 4 both which I run on ultra settings at 60fps. Boot up and all load times are very fast with the solid state drive though the space may seem limited to someone with a large game library. I give this 4/5 stars for the price I got it but anything above $800 and I’d drop that rating to 3/5 stars.

This is a bang for your buck laptop. Temps can get high unless you fiddle with the timings and power using 3rd party software. But if you can get this for around $800 on sale as I did, you can't really beat the deal. For it's normal price - around $1100 - there are other options out there. Screen is only 60hz and is difficult to replace with other screens due to its measurements. Intel i5 9300h GTX 1660Ti Firestrike score - 11,500

Great laptop, gets warm, plug it in

So I'm kind of in love with this laptop. I'm not big on gaming on the go, but I figured it would be nice to have the ability to do so in a relatively portable package. This computer offers surprisingly great performance at a very affordable price. The laptop body is made entirely out of plastic, but it's a very high quality plastic if you follow. It doesn't flex or bend, even when it gets warm. Feels very sturdy. The display is pretty good, but it's not the best. There's a sweet spot for viewing angles and anything outside of that is washed out and pale. Still it's great to have full 1080p in such a small size and the matte finish does prevent reflections, even in direct lighting. Color accuracy is pretty good but I wouldn't rely on this as a mobile editing system if you're doing anything that requires serious color work. Overall a good display that gets plenty bright. of note - windows scaling is set to 125% by default, changing it to 100% makes everything on this laptop tiny. I'd recommend leaving it where it is. The keyboard is nice and responsive, as is the trackpad. I'm not a fan of laptop keyboards, especially gaming on one, but this one isn't half bad. It takes some adjustment coming from a full-sized mechanical keyboard, but it's plenty comfortable for long typing sessions and yes even gaming. The trackpad is ... a trackpad. It's adequate, as is every other trackpad I've ever used. Get yourself a cheap wireless mouse and use that instead. Trackpads are fine in a pinch, or if you're really trying to save on space, but I'm just not a fan. Still, this one is accurate and easy to use, so there's that. The guts! There are a decent amount of IO ports on this, but nothing extraordinary. Enough to charge a device while using a few attached ones. I was impressed to see a gtx1660ti MAX-Q in this thing, that's a good amount of horsepower for a laptop. I was less thrilled to see only 8gb of ram installed. My plan was to buy a 16 or 32gb kit immediately, but after using this thing for a week I don't think I'll be doing that any time soon. Everything loads and runs very quickly, even with multiple applications running in the background and at startup. I'm impressed. Windows is kind of notorious for ram usage but this thing works like a charm. But what about gaming you ask?? Not an issue. The first games I installed were League of Legends, Overwatch, and CSG. They all run perfectly at max settings. LoL hits well over 100fps, as does CSG. Overwatch is in the 70s on ultra, but I think resolution scaling was on as well as the ultra preset so I'm not fussed since it's a 60hz display. There's no hitching, no dropped frames, no noticeable lag of any kind. It's great. More demanding titles like Jedi Fallen Order run very well too. This laptop easily hits a stable 60fps at ultra settings. So I'm happy. I'm not too bothered about any other titles at the moment. This laptop packs a surprising punch. Oh but you'll definitely want to plug this thing in. Because the battery suuuuuucks! I mean sacrifices have to be made to pack this much stuff (8 thread cpu, 1660ti max-q) into such a small package. Battery time is pretty much trash on this thing using it in it's default power profile. Just doing some basic web browsing, watching the occasional video, and typing I burned about 50% battery in a little over 90 minutes. I didn't even bother with gaming because come on. Your cpu and gpu boost clocks are going to be attempting to hit their max when a game calls for it, and even a modest esports title like LoL will tax the system a little bit. Once the hardware really starts working kiss your battery goodbye. Just plug it in. The alienware software lets you set custom power profiles, but so does windows so you have a few options on how you want your system to perform on battery. You can dial back brightness, boostclocks, and even voltages if you know what you're doing, but I'd rather just plug it in. If I'm going to a friends for some gaming I'm always going to plug this thing in. If you're sitting in a lecture the battery will get you through it but you're going to have to charge up a few times to get through a full day. Speaking of the dell software ... ... you're really going to want to use it to set your own fan curves because this thing gets hot. Playing a game taxes this system the most and when that happens fan speeds increase. This thing sounds like a jet engine, but again it's the price you pay for stuffing so much power into a tiny chassis. Even at the default alienware settings the fan curve is not enough to dissipate heat. At the default curve CPU temps in LoL immediately hit 90C and stayed there. At that temp thermal throttling of the CPU definitely happens, but fortunately it doesn't affect performance. Going into the alienware command center I created a custom curve that ramps fans all the way up to 100% as the CPU approaches 90C (the upper operating temp of this generation). I am not comfortable running my pc 90C during long gaming sessions, fortunately the new fan curve brings temps back down to the 70s, which to be fair isn't that bad. This thing already sounds like a jet engine when the fans ramp up, so the slight increase in noise over the default curve isn't really noticeable, and is certainly worth the 20C cooler temps. Do yourself a favor, buy some nice headphones, crank up the fan speed, and prolong the lifespan of your laptop. You'll want your GPU fans ramped up as well, the GPU is plenty happy around 80C, but it doesn't need to be maxed all the time. With the new fan curve thermal throttling never happened again. So good job. Overall I have to admit, and repeat myself, I'm very impressed with this laptop. There's nothing about it that I would say is "perfect", but it's a laptop. It's not a desktop gaming rig. Laptops by their nature are compromise devices, and the compromises made here to get all of this performance in this form factor are absolutely worth it. If you're in the market for a windows laptop, and interested at all in gaming, get this one. The price is right, the build quality is stellar, and the performance is amazing. Just be sure to set that custom fan curve to keep things cool and you're good to go. And plug in, or bring a ton of battery banks. Your call.
