Due to the 4k display, it acts like it were to work four years ago. You can't even play the simplest games like minecraft at a decent fps. It would work at 10fps in minecraft with dedicated graphics.

A Great Laptop with minor flaws

Pros: 4K screen; sweet price; 12GB RAM Cons: No fatal flaw found so far. Thanks to the Best Buy people I got mine only one day after I put in my order. The 4k screen looks astonishing at the first glance. The color reproduction is quite good. As a 4k laptop at the lowest price so far in the market, the performance of the system is quite satisfiable. I have another two laptop equipped with I5-3317u and I7-4700HQ. The new i7-5500u is much faster compared to the old I5-3317u. Its single core performance is not too much worse than the quad-core I7-4700HQ. So for daily job this laptop is a very good choice, as long as you don't give the CPU some jobs which are way too tough for a ULV chip. The R7 M270 4GB discrete graphic card is quite enough for day-to-day uses. Its performance is close to that of Geforce 840M. You can play some light games with it, but definitely not at the 4k resolution. What the buyers should pay attention to is that the 4k IPS panel is from Samsung. I am sure it's better than what you can get from the current Lenovo Y50 4k models. But because the pixels on the panel share some subpixels, if you scale down the fonts to some extent you can see the sharpness of the letters drops significantly. Surprisingly, when I changed the resolution to 1920*1080, the sharpness still looked great. So if you want a super clear view no matter what the size of the font is and the best color reproduction, you should choose the pricier Sharp IGZO 4k panels (which you can find on Dell Precision, some Clevo Barebones, Toshiba P50T, P55T, and other more expensive models as well). The Samsung panels are the trade-off between price and performance. There is some noise coming from the speakers of the one I got. I am still trying to solve this problem. The noise is not that noticeable but might be a little annoying when it is quiet around. There is also some light bleeding at the bottom left of my screen. I am probably too picky but who doesn't want to buy a perfect product?

Excellent laptop for video and photo editors

I purchased this latop at the 5th ave in NYC in april and updated to 16gb of ram with geek squad. Once I came back to Argentina I swap the 1tb disc to a SSD 256 that I had with a clean reinstallation of all; Win 8.1 key was actomatically up with the Bios that it contains it, so I could have same windows 8.1 from factory. I use Lightroom for photoedition and Sony Vegas Pro 13 for video edition. The only thing and what all people argue aboutn 4k displays compability, is that if SW don't allow 4k interface, you must switch display resolution to 1080p and to 100% of scale and it's done; you can you old SW without any problem. I must do this for Sony Vegas and Photoshop; not Lightroom. If you can add a SSD and upgrade to 16gb ram, this will boot in just 2 or 3 seconds... AWESOME!!! (i did not have any wifi problems as I read somewhere) I highly recomend it but upgrade to 16gb of Ram and a SSD. (it came with 2 slots of Ram, 4gb + 8gb, Just buy ONLY 1 of 8gb) I purchased a blister with 2 of 8gb and I have the 4gb and the other 8gb for other home laptop..or just for sell). you won't regret with this one

    Almost Pefect

I will start with the positives. Screen: Incredible screen. Crisp, bright, great color. The computer is very lightweight and fast. Battery life is roughly 5 hours, but if depends what you are doing with the computer. For those that are browsing the net, watching videos, word processing, or similar in nature, the battery will last at least five hours. If you are doing video editing, which is what I do, rendering video takes its toll on the batter, cuts it down to about 4 hours or so. (Adobe Premiere and AE CS4) The good: Keyboard layout should be wider. It takes a little effort to get used the the narrow keyboard, but the keys are responsive and well backlite, and they feel solid. For the most part the computer runs quietly, but the fan does come on often and it does make some noise, not much, but some. The not-so-good: I am not calling it bad, but irritating at first. The "intelligent" screen brightness, keeps adjusting the screen brightness on me. I have tried several things to fix this problem, but it seems that there is no "real" way to turn it off. The adjustments are subtle, but you do notice them. The touch-pad. There is no control over the touch-pad. No Synaptic manager. Two finger scrolling works well if your fingers are in the middle of the touch-pad and you press firmly. I have had no problem with my palm striking the touch-pad and creating problems. Overall this is a great laptop with two minor problems that I can overlook. You might want to take a hard look at this laptop with its 5th Generation i7, 12GB ram, 4GB video card, 4K screen and for this price, its a great deal.

Awesome as I would expect from Dell!

I have always been a Dell user. My last one was a Studio XPS I bought in 2009. It was starting to wear out, so I purchased a Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro after hearing all the rave. I will say it is definitely a snazzy little thing and I enjoyed it very much. But I found myself using it for light work and going back to my old XPS for more intense work, graphics, and editing. I realized it just wasn't going to work for me as much as I wanted it to. I researched and found this one and it looked like the perfect combination of cool and functionality. I returned my Yoga 2, got this one, and was impressed from the minute I turned it on. Nothing less than what I expect from Dell. This one will definitely do the job. Incredible graphics, speed is great (although I have to admit not as awesome as the solid state drive in the Yoga 2), but it has the best of both worlds when it comes to what I was hoping to find. The sound/speakers are amazing!! Love the positioning of the keyboard and the extra large touch pad. Already much more satisfied with this one and so glad I returned the Yoga 2 for it.

Almost get the ASUS 2-in-1 laptop, but found this one with much better resolution and more ram for the same price. It is also lighter to carry. Will see how good it is once windows 10 as out. maybe, it is time to switch from Apple product to window product again.

This computer is very nice having seeing it in person gives it is true value. The computer has 3 usb 3.0 on the sides. Its is 4K not cinema 4K. Decent ini size not too heavy and also had a big keyboard. Does not have numbers on the sides. Also this computer does not do 2 in 1 but thats ok. This has a 5 generation Inel core I7 which is needed. I would like to run heavy intense games on this PC. it has 12 GB of ram on it so yeah its really good. All of the features are upgradable so its a great buy if you really ask me. I think Dell outdid them selves on this one. Making a affordable computer under 1K. I tip my hats to them.

    Dell w/4K Investment

Excellent features with I7 5th gen, only 5400rpm drive but can be overcome with hybrid drive+1TB capacity, as specs more than enough flow to make this a quality machine. Wish it had the DVD included but its sacrificed for the weight factor. Some noted problem with charging and I observed that this would occur if the connector had twists in the cord before insertion to unit. 4K feature is nice for its initial outlay but not much software can take advantage. Just reset the resolution and you will achieve more clarify in the 4K realm. BTW that video card plus discrete on board is working well to produce a sharp image. Worth the investment, will get hot if no air flow so a chill pad is recommended. Upgraded to Windows10, no problem. In fact 4K performed better on image sharpness, possible due to drivers.

powerful machine, but poor battery life

i just recently bought this one and so far good. i really want to give this a 5 star, but there is one drawback. This Laptop delivers high resolution, excellent audio speaker, responsive touchscreen and touchpad, powerful machine - see specs- , BUT the laptop's battery life is poor - about 2 hours - downloading (new apps like web security, video player, etc .. drained battery on full charged. if you want to treat this laptop like a desktop and not really a concerned on the battery life, i think this laptop would be an excellent laptop. also, i didnt like where the fan vent are. it's on the buttom as oppose to being in the sides like my old laptop. the keyboard seems to be very small, but not hard to type.

Best screen in almost any cpu or laptop

I only really purchased this for viewing photos or videos online. For 1k, its just not that much more than other laptops with lower resolution screens. I was at first leery of the keyboard as its smaller but after about 15 mins or so I got comfortable with it. The screen is the best feature, so bright, crisp, makes photos and images look better than real life. As for 4k, my internet at home is rather slow and can't really take advantage of this feature but at least I think I am future proofed this way by having 4k ready. In the store this laptop will look less impressive as its really kind of abused, people with dirty hands touch it daily and pick it up and let it down without much care. Once you open yours at home its really more impressive than store ones.

fast computer perfect for everyday needs. One thing to note with the beautiful 4k display is that the system uses adaptive graphics, meaning that it mainly uses the integrated intel i7 graphics and switches to the AMD dedicated graphics when needed. While this sounds great, there are many programs that are locked into the intel graphics, including google chrome and internet explorer. This means that you will have to use the new microsoft edge browser and configure it to the AMD graphics if you plan on streaming 4k youtube or netflix content.

Bought this from Best Buy a little over one month ago and at day 27 the hard drive crashed. After a day of attempting to recover/restore the software, broke down and called Dell Customer Support. After another 90 minutes of troubleshooting with Dell, they decided to send me a USB drive with the operating system on it. When it arrived, 4 days later, it didn't work. On the phone again with Dell, another 45 minutes of troubleshooting, they finally decided that the hard drive was fried. After another 3 days I received a new hard drive in the mail. I installed it and after another 3 hours, I was up and running. After another few days I had reinstalled all of my "major" software. I did lose some pictures, music and movies, but I will survive. Oh, replacement hard drive didn't have everything on it that the initial hard drive had...still working on that. Now, as Paul Harvey would say, "and now for the rest of the story." GREAT monitor, good RAM and good "size" hard drive. Adequate ports, keyboard a little smaller than I think they should have installed. Thin and light weight. I've found the battery lif to be less then expected...lasts about 3.5hrs to 4hrs with normal use. Seems to get a little "warm." Slightly concerning to me. All in all, a good product with a great monitor, but everything else in total makes it a less than satisfactory buy for me. Actually, I'm torn between 2 and 3 stars, but all things considered, I believe 2 stars best reflects my experience.

    Brilliant Screen, Very Slow

I bought this laptop for the fair amount of video editing I do. The screen is absolutely crisp, clear, and beautiful. I loved it. However, I haven't seen a computer this slow since the 90s. Considering it has so much RAM, an incredible processor, and an impressive graphics card, it should be lightening fast. (But it's so bad that I'm writing this review from my half-broken laptop and this much older machine is way faster.) Before you fall in love with the screen, make sure to open up a few tabs on your browser and you'll see a marked difference in performance. This laptop should be able to handle this kind of thing easily. I only gave it two stars because of the screen, otherwise, this is not worth the money. I'm returning it today.

The specs speak for themselves...Wait to you get this baby home and set up! It flies! I can play GTA V at 1080p no problem! This is a desktop replacement. Well built, excellent backlit keyboard and trackpad. For under $1000, I could not find anything better than this Dell. I tried for months. The color balance is accurate too, something hard to get today I found. Down the road, after Win 10 gets released, I will upgrade to a SSD. But I'm telling ya, this machine does not need one! Just close any programs (processes) you are not using. 12GB DDR3 RAM and a 4GB dedicated AMD GPU are blazing. Only thing is, it does not boot up as fast as a pc with a SSD drive. But I can wait! I love this laptop, you will too!
