A lot of laptop for the money

Have owned the Dell laptop for about a month now, so far so good! Really my only complaint is that the touch screen on a this laptop is a waste of money. I use a mouse, & the touch ability is unnecessary, for my use. Having a 2 in one, it may be wonderful but for me, not so much. The computer is fast and works well. The complaints as to picking up fingerprints on its case is valid, but they are easily wiped off - wtm071

Top level internals make this laptop fast & efficient. The display is excellent. Images appear sharp & colors are dry realistic. Because of the solid state drive, the laptop boots up very quickly. Some might feel the keys on the keyboard to be too shallow when pressed. However, the keyboard works for me. I love having the 10 key. My last laptop didn't have one and I enter lots of numbers. The laptop does not come with lots of bloat ware which I like. The only issue that I have had is that the ac modem seems to drop my internet connection all too often. However, I suspect it may not play well with my old DSL router. All in all, I am highly satisfied with this laptop and look forward to years of use!

Great Computer, Unsteady OS

Bought this computer after my previous Dell Inspiron decided to just stop booting Windows 10 one day. Figuring it was time for an upgrade anyway, I purchased this computer online over the Black Friday weekend and received it December 2nd. It is a beautiful and lighting fast computer, the 4k display is great, although not all software/programs are formatted for 4k UHD, and there were some tiny windows at times. My personal use was for my portable home recording studio and the 16 GB RAM, quad-core i7, and dual storage was ideal...... for the 9 days it lasted.
The computer unexpectedly froze for awhile during use one night, and after I let it do its thing, I restarted the computer to give it a fresh boot. It never went anywhere past the Dell boot-up logo after that (same death as my previous comp.). It kept saying it was trying to diagnose and auto repair the computer because "it seemed like Windows wasn't starting up". It would state there were no hardware problems and start the process over. After calling support, I was walked through doing a re-install of W10, only for it to continue not boot even after that, and I was told that "sometimes you don't get a clean copy of the OS on the initial installation", even though my previous computer had the same thing happen two weeks earlier after running W10 perfect for 1.5 years. Then, THE VERY NEXT DAY, my buddy calls ands asks if I can help him with his W10 based computer and what do you know? SAME THING...
The computer itself and its hardware are great. But Windows is failing right now and its not worth investing this kind of money into a sheer hope that your computer has a clean install of the OS. I strongly considered just having them replace it since it's a sweet computer, but I returned mine to BB and am finally considering the switch to Mac.

Not a real 4K 3840x2160 screen like the Dell XPS.

The specs of this laptop sound nice, however what I didn't know at first about it was that the display isn't actually a real 4K.
This display uses a dot pattern called "RG/BW Pentile", which is a deceptive trick manufacturers sometimes use to produce a cheaper less-sharp display that can still be sold as a particular resolution. It doesn't actually have 3840x2160 individual full pixels like the XPS 15's 4K screen, its "pixels" are more like stretched half-pixels. The screen might look compared to older laptop screens, but real 4K screens look much better, and you're not getting what you're being advertised.
If you want a 4K screen, buy the Dell XPS 15, Lenovo Y700 4K, or Lenovo Yoga 710 4K (available here at Best Buy). Don't buy this, because it's not what it says it is.

overall physical build is very solid, screen opens and closes with one hand on corner with very slight screen flexing, power cord connector very heavy duty, it wont break easy. surface is a flat matt black finish, does not leave finger prints,
performance- with that SSD drive it only take a couple seconds to be fully loaded to desktop. screen is actually too bright for indoor at night. you have to turn it down but its easy with the shortcut buttons.
Handles Fallout 4 with no problems, on lowest setting its instant with no lag, max settings its a bit choppy.
sound quality is great and very loud.
my previous 2 laptops were Sony VAIO, my last one still works and got it in 2009, used for 7 years and no problems.
the quality with this one is right on par with the sony VAIO.
I predict this laptop should last 5-7 years.

After lots of reviews, I determined this computer was by far the best computer for the money. I got it on sale for $999. Overall I love the computer, but I was quickly annoyed by the track-pad. It feels loose to the touch and when i'm in my office and it's quiet, just placing my finger on the pad makes a clicking noise. I ended up returning it in exchange for a new one of the same model. I have yet to receive the new one so I can't say yet whether it was a bad attachment or inherent to the model. All other things about the computer are fantastic. I'd highly recommend if you are going to use it with an attached mouse, and if not, just be aware of the potential track-pad annoyance. Speed, touchscreen, speakers, HD space with separate graphics card and i7 processor make this laptop an awesome buy.

Extremely happy with this Dell - Inspiron 15.6" 4K Ultra HD Touch-Screen Laptop - Intel Core i7 - 16GB - 128GB Solid State Drive + 1TB Hard Drive - Gray.
Note: Gray = almost black, in fact I would call it black. I went through several laptops before getting this one (ASUS, Samsung, Dell). Each one had problems, and ultimately had to be returned as defective (after many attempts to get the issues corrected with Geek Squad...nothing worked and GS advised returning the laptops). This one wasn't available originally, and I am really happy it was available when I returned my last laptop.
I do a lot of photo and video editing, and this laptop handles it with ease. It's extremely fast. Camera is very good. Keyboard is comfortable, and backlit. 10-key is perfect. 4K screen is beautiful!
Another note: Google Chrome works 100% better with this (I think Win 10) than Mozilla Firefox. I didn't want to make the switch, but once I did it made a huge difference.
I just remembered that I did have to return this exact same model due to warped bottom cover. Had to get a replacement, which took a while, but I've had the replacement for a month now and it's perfect.

I was discouraged to find out that 4k streaming from netflix is only supported on 7th gen intel processors. Which was the primary reason for selecting a 4k laptop. I should have dug a little deeper when researching. Otherwise, its a great lap top. The 4K display is great for games. Unfortunately I cannot stream in 4k. I could have saved a few hundred dollars by just buying a laptop with a highend HD display and gotten the same level of performance.

Love everything about this laptop ,however dell needs to improve speakers used. The speakers will occasionally crackle static..and a slight vibration rattle noise..

BE WARNED

Fair warning: this is going to be lengthy.
I have been building computers, installing operating systems (DOS, every flavor or Windows since 3.0, OS/X, and multiple flavors of Linux), and programming computers for the last thirty-five years. Before purchasing this laptop, I researched the heck out of other user's experience both on the Best Buy website and Dell's website, and any other sites I could find on Google. None of that research prepared me for the month of lost time, lost files, and lost productivity I would face when I finally received the laptop.
For the first two weeks, all was well. Then, the second hard drive (the 1 GB non-SSD drive), failed without warning. No noises, no disappearing in Windows and then reappearing -- the drive just stopped showing up in Windows and in the BIOS. I took it in to the local Geek Squad and they diagnosed the drive as having failed and replaced it at no charge. Drives fail, I understand that, and because the laptop was so new, there was some file loss, but it was minimal. Fine, this kind of thing does happen.
A week later, I noticed before going to work that the laptop had completely locked up. Keyboard wasn't responding, trackpad wasn't responding -- everything had locked. I did a hard reboot via the power button. The laptop shut down, came back up, and seemed fine for about a minute or two and suddenly it locked up again. Having been in this situation before, I realized that the issue was probably either a bad driver, bad memory, or something I had installed (although I hadn't installed anything new on the laptop since the hard drive had been replaced).
I ran Memtest on it and the RAM seemed okay. I ran the Dell diagnostics built into the BIOS and it checked out okay as well. Long story short, I spent the next four or five days attempting to figure out and repair the issue myself via Windows Updates or direct driver updates via the software already installed on the computer (such as the nVidia pre-installed software suite), and nothing worked. I could never successfully run a Windows Update because the computer would crash in the middle of the update. I did manage to once successfully update the nVidia driver through the nVidia software, but the computer continued to lock up. It wasn't "if" the computer would crash, it was "when". Sometimes it happened even before I had a chance to log in, sometimes right after, sometimes not for a few minutes after that.
I took it back to Geek Squad and they ran their own hardware diagnostic on it -- they told me it definitely wasn't a hardware issue. Therefore, they claimed, it was a software issue and for a mere $150, I could purchase a one-off troubleshooting for them to look at it. By this point, the laptop was less than one month old. They wouldn't concede that it was a lemon (and ship me a new one) and they also wouldn't take it back as a return, since it was past the 14 day return policy.
Realizing I was getting nowhere and unwilling for pay $150 to fix a BRAND NEW COMPUTER, I declined the offer. I figured I would just bring the laptop home, do a factory reset (since the computer didn't lock up for the first three weeks I owned it) and just start from scratch. It was a good idea in theory, except that the factory reset image present on the hard drive contained the exact same buggy driver. So, while the factory reset succeeded, it also locked up once I rebooted. Windows Update also failed because it could never complete before the system crashed.
I then went to Dell's website and downloaded and burned the Recovery Disk. This proved to be futile as the Recovery Disk ALSO had the bad driver on it (it would crash every single time at 70% restored -- I'm assuming this was when the bad driver was loaded into memory).
The solution was that I had to get a "clean" version of Windows 10 -- one that wasn't specifically bundled with the drivers specific to my laptop -- installed first, disable the nVidia driver from within Windows, run a Windows Update successfully for the first time, install the Dell Update application, which then finally installed a functional version of the nVidia driver.
I have to say that this experience has left me angry that Best Buy/Geek Squad did not stand behind the product which they sold to me and as someone who has spent tens of thousands of dollars at Best Buy over my lifetime, reluctant to ever make another purchase from Best Buy again. In fact, once I've paid off the balance of my BB credit card, I will be canceling the account and plan to not step foot into any of their stores again.
My one star rating is not of the hardware itself. In fact, now that it appears to be stable, it fits many of the criteria that made me purchase it in the first place. However, between the buggy drivers present in the Dell Image and the lack of resolution from BB/Geek Squad, I would seriously warn potential buyers to carefully consider this purchase. I have decades of computer experience that helped me ultimately solve the issues I faced ... imagine if I had been less hardware/operating system literate?
