The Denon AVR-S960H Receiver was fairly easy to set up with the provided mike. I set it up as a 5.1 system and when playing 5.1 material it sounds very good and lots of volume. Although when I switch to satellite programing the volume is a lot lower. The receiver doesn't get along well with my Samsung TV that has a separate smart hub where all the HDMI cables and other connections plug in before the hub connects to the tv. When playing the ROKU it forgets the source and the picture drops out. Not sure if is the receiver or the smart hub but it's the smart hub that suppose to keep track of switching to the right input.

Wonderful Home Theater Amp

I do love this A/V Home Theater amp. I picked this amp for a couple of reasons. The first was for the wattage and speaker support. The second reason for the WiFi network ability. The final reason was because it said it was Alexa compatible. Now, I didn’t realize that its not exactly Alexa or Google compatible. The built in HEOS is compatible. HEOS is a feature I never use as I already have Apple TV that does the same thing, and much better. HEOS is something like AirPlay. It can also stream internet radio and music streaming services that you subscribe to. It’s only within HEOS that Alexa can control the volume of the amp. HEOS also let’s you “cast” to other HEOS devices, just like AirPlay, for listening to music in multiple rooms. It doesn’t work with television broadcasts or video… where as AirPlay will “cast” video, but not television broadcast programming.
The setup was easy enough. The first screen that pops up helps you start configuring the networking WiFi settings, then does a check for firmware updates. Finally, it asks you about your speakers and how you are going to connect them. The instructions say to not connect them until the setup tells you when to connect them. I’d already had them connected as I’m pretty familiar with home theater systems and didn’t need the device to hold my hand and walk me thru the process. After the speakers are connected, it tests each speaker to verify it is connected properly. It’ll then ask you to connect the included mic so that it can configure the speaker setup for the best audio.
The included remote is pretty easy to understand and is straight forward. It’s not really programmable so if you have cable or Sat TV, chances are you’ll never use the amp remote unless you’re needing to change the amp settings. Or change the theater sound to a different mode.
You are able to set up a second zone and the amp has plenty of different theater modes to choose from. It is Atmos capable, though I still am confused as to what Atmos really does and why it needs speakers designed for it… when in truth you can save some cash and get another set of good speakers and get the same effect that sounds better.
With everything going “smart” it isn’t necessary that everything in your system be “smart”. You can get a “smart” tv and that’s it, unless you’re needing specific features that typically only come with “smart” devices. I was wanting to be able to control the volume with Alexa or Google, change the channels. Basic stuff. I have DirecTV and my service provider and while Alexa is able to turn the DirecTV on/off and pause… it seems it can’t change the volume. I have a smart Samsung tv and Alexa can’t connect to it. I thought maybe the amp, but Alexa is only compatible with HEOS and not the amp directly. So Alexa isn’t able to change the amp to TV, or Game, or the other inputs. It can’t change the volume (unless you’re actively using HEOS). She also can’t change the theater modes. Makes you wonder what she’s good for outside of lights. LoL!

Great all around receiver

This is my second Denon in 15 years, my last one was and still is a champ. It was the 3808CI and even though it can still blow me away in 7.1 setup it just doesn't have all the new codecs and capabilities this one has. So time for an upgrade but now that I have 4 kids a $2K receiver was still a bit more than I could sell the wife on.
I initially purchased an Onkyo TX-NR696 based on all the reviews even against my gut and better judgement telling me Denon are superior receivers. I tried to save a few hundred but apparently my Vizio 4K TV has a known glitch with that receiver and as experienced as I am I could not get it to work. After searching AV forums and Reddit I foudn that neither company, Onkyo or Vizio want to fix the issues they are both aware of so I returned it and bought this one as I should have in the first place.
Pros
*Has all the audio codecs for today's movies
*Auto switches between inputs seamless, not noticeable cliking like with the Onkyo I returned
*Great clear sound as you expect from Denon
*Comes with the calibration microphone to optimize your setup
*Plent of HDMI inputs as well as a few other inputs
*Smartphone App that is actually quite intuitive
*Built in Chromecast and HEOS features which is nice to quickly stream movies/music from your phone
Cons
*Not as heavy as my old Denon, usually something I would correlate to quality when purchasing receivers
*Not as many inputs as some other receivers
*My kids Oculus will not cast to the Chromecast for some reason but had no issues when my physical Chromecast was connected to the same TV
Overall for the price this receiver has all the current codecs to fully enjoy the latest movies and media content. I am glad I purchased this receiver and should have just bought this one to begin with...

The a denon 8k AVR is an outstanding product for the money. It provides me with an outstanding theatre surround sound system which is the next thing to actually being at the movie theater!
The hook up directions are printed for clear and easy steps to follow. This is the top of the line product for quality sound effects.

Very happy with this receiver. It can handle all the 4K stuff that is available today. Got a PS5 plugged into it and it handles the HDMI signal just fine and also has full pass through capabilities for if I want to operate my PS5 without having sound through the receiver. Very easy to set up things with this receiver. If I ever decide to upgrade my 4K tv to an 8K tv, this receiver can handle that.

This receiver has exceeded my expectations. I had been a Yamaha receiver user for years and was a little nervous about switching brands and having to learn a new setup. I wish I had switched sooner. The initial setup was one of the easiest I've setup. The sound quality is excellent and the changing of sound programs is easy and intuitive. The HEOS feature is great and makes listening to our online streaming services easy and much more fun that before.

Bought to replace an old Harman Kardon receiver, and I am thoroughly impressed so far. Setup was easy, sounds amazing, and looks good. I was worried about power output, but unless you’re driving speakers in a movie theater or high school auditorium, it’s plenty for a 5.2 or 7.2 surround system in a home living room. Think this is the sweet spot in the lineup, and a great “bang for your buck” receiver. Very pleased.

Fantastic quality.
My old Denon was starting to play up (it was about 4 years old) so I decided to get this entry-level receiver and I must say, the sound quality is absolutely beautiful, especially in 5.1.2. Denon does Dolby (sounds like a 60's pron movie, lol) Atmos very well, and with the included calibration mic, setup was very easy.
Love Denon. The yogurt is good as well. Wait, that's Dennon. Oh well.

Average but not perfect. If all you want is sound then this is for you. If you were hoping for a full blow internet box with Google and Alexa you will be disappointed. The note I read said that is has the Amazon Alexa built into it but I can't figure out how to get it to work. Additionally I could not get ARC working with my LG tv, but it worked fine with my last non-Denon receiver. I called phone support and they thought maybe I could mail the receiver to them and have them take a look. Guess the support rep was unaware of the weight and size of the unit. Additionally they have an android app to control the receive on your phone but it is a very basic app and a bit of a let down. If you want to do internet music you also really need to use their specific app. Bluetooth seems ok. The whole interface to setup and and underlying config screens are very basic and can be confusing.
The stuff sounds good but not sure I'm impressed by any of the 'features'. they advertise Audyssey MultEQ XT, DTS Virtual:X, DTS:X, Dolby Atmos, Dolby Digital, Virtual Surround Sound but unless you know how to get access to all that stuff, forget about it, they are not in the manual and the onscreen display really sucks.

I love this product. I checked the few negative reviews listed before purchasing and i was pretty sure i knew where people who experienced fault errors had gone wrong and sure enough i had NO problems. I am very experienced at home AV and i did have to double check some speaker wiring, but the setup guided me through it. Sonically, this unit is amazing. And operationally, this is easy peasy.

Amazing receiver I've had it for a month now, It powers my Klipsch setup with no issues at all, sound quality is great, I spent a lot of time looking into receivers and landed on this one.
It also connects to Spotify seamlessly, I can control Spotify from my phone or PC.
The Denon mobile app makes adjusting the receiver convenient also.
If you're in this price range don't get the X1600H, either get the S960H or X2700H.

This is my first AVR and it doesn't disappoint. Have it set up with Sony surround speakers with atmos height speakers and SVS subwoofer. I used the built in audyssey calibration tool and it sounds amazing, only thing I had to adjust was the center channel for dialog. Set up and use is incredibly easy and quality is fantastic.
Definitely recommend this AVR

So, this is just the initial review. It will change when I receive the new HDMI dongle to correct the 4K/120Hz issue with the Xbox Series X. Item came in nice packaging. Easy to connect wires/cables. The setup was very user-friendly and fast. So far, I am rather impressed with this as an upgrade from my Sony STR-DN1080.

Avr S960 itself is top notch with all the power and features I need for my home theater. However, when it comes to connecting all the peripherals there's plenty of confusion. It doesn't come with an extensive manual like my older Denon avr. I need to call Denon tech services for a hook-up walk through. Really shouldn't have to reach out for help but I have no choice.

I am very happy with my new Denon receiver. I have a Bose speaker system which works a bit differently and yet it was real easy to install and setup this new Denon. This is my first Denon and I am pleased with the quality. Previously I have owned Onkyo. I thought I would try something new.

Receiver produces excellent sound that can be heard in each of the unique modes. Options allow for setup in every application and receiver gives the feel of a high end system. Setup is mostly easy and even helped us detect issues with currently installed speakers. System is a little pricey but you definitely feel like you’re getting your money’s worth once you set up
