Functionally the sound and access to this are good to very good. Setup could be worlds better. Instructions were an utter waste, and online forums insufficient.

This is my second Denon receiver gone bad due to protection light turning on due to some internal damage caused if you’re using very low impedance loudspeakers at high volume for an extended length of time. The volume was not that high and it was being used for just under an hour. Maybe Denon is not capable to handle the sound and volume traffic . Very disappointing !!

First off, the set up of any receiver with room correction and multiple connections is going to take some time. As you start moving up the home theater receiver food chain, a little knowledge and planning goes a long way. My set up from unboxing to sampling my first movie took about 30 minutes. A few things I noticed right out of the box. The unit has some heft to it. It comes with the remote, bluetooth antennas, minimal documentation, an Audyssey mic, and a cardboard stand to place the mic at various places in your media room to set up the Audyssey room correction. The manual needs to be downloaded from the internet. I actually prefer this method because I have misplaced every manual for every amp I have ever owned. Second, you are going to have to place the Audyssey mic at eight different locations in your room. I found during the room correction setup the on screen prompts made it very easy. The screen menus provide pictures for the technically challenged. There is no way to make a mistake. Also with Audyssey MultiEq32 there is a menu to set the volume for your sub (Or subs) before the calibration. Very useful tool not found on lower versions of Audyssey. The on screen menus ask you about your speakers, walk you through connecting each one, and after all that is said and done, asks you to identify your media sources. For example, I connected my AppleTV using an HDMI connection and plugged it into the media player HDMI port in the receiver. The screen menu asks you which HDMI port you are using, asks you to turn on the device you are connecting, and then identifies the device. You repeat the process for your other connections and move on. Very easy. Another FYI, make sure you give the receiver enough room to breathe. Every receiver I have ever owned gets warm and some get very hot. Add an external fan if your space is limited. The bluetooth antennas stick up in the back about three inches over the top of the amp. If you don't have enough room for the antennas to extend, I would say you are not giving the receiver enough room to breathe. After set up was complete I sampled some movies and music. I made a few adjustments to the Audyssey EQ to suit my tastes. I then sat down with my wife to enjoy a movie. To me the clarity and separation was very impressive. This receiver had no problem driving my 5.1 speaker set up. This version of Audyssey is a step up from my old system. It's only been a few days but so far I am very impressed. As a side note I first purchased the Denon AVRX2500H. It was not as impressive as this receiver. It had a lower version of Audyssey, seemed a bit flat and did not have as much power. I was told Martin Logans speakers are power hungry and I now tend to agree. Get the 3500 you will not be disappointed.

It had an intermittent problem with sound. The audio would drop to less than half and sound noisy. I returned it. I think I would have been pleased with the unit if not for the failure.

Poor documentation , rear panel layout overcrowded

My friend wanted to upgrade the old dated home theater system of her deceased husband, so I brought her to the Frederick store hoping to audition in the Magnolia showroom only to find it was "closed" due to wiring issues. So we had to make some blind decisions. I had suggested multiplet brands in a price range. To my surprise, she made an upscaled purchase of this Denon unit after sales rep suggested it. Trying to set up the AVR was an ongoing hair pulling process. Apart from a mostly useless Quick Start guide. there's no documentation except for a QR code to the User Manual PDF file in the "cloud". Finally got it downloaded to tablet, all 300 pages of it. Dear Denon, too cheap to enclose a CD?. Back panel is dense with connections that less than user friendly. The antennae for Bluetooth and WiFi are in the top rear corners of the chassis and require at least an additional 3" of vertical clearance to point straight up. Default speakersetup both manual and Audyssey is for 7.1 and you need to dig around in the 300 pages of the Owners' Manual to change configuration for 5.1 . I've been at this A/V game for quite at awhile and have never seen speaker terminal that didn't have a hole in the center of the binding post for bare wire connections. Be sure you buy those banana plugs before you leave the store or you'll be making a second trip. Thanks Denon for me and my friend having to spend more time setting up the new home theater system than listening /watching.
