Not nearly as good as the book

The acting was fine, but it just flat out irks me that the whole undercurrent of incest and severe family disfunction was excised or glossed over, other than the one scene where Vivi's mother tells her something to the effect of a father shouldn't be buying his daughter expensive jewelry. The tug of war between Old South Baptist of Northern Louisiana and French Catholic New Orleans was also absent. Nonetheless, having been raised in a powerful matriarchy, the movie has enough meat to make me squirm. But it's not nohow in the same league as the grand dame of chick flicks, Steel Magnolias. Read the book by Rebecca Wells, and watch Steel Magnolias again instead.

I have read the book written by Rebecca Wells, and this movie is disappointing in comparison with the book and the real stories that should have been displayed in the movie. It does not show the true girl friendship that the Ya-Ya's shared. The acting is decent and the actresses embody the characters of Vivi, Necie, Caro, and Teensy, but the viewers do not get the full story. It was a mediocre movie, and I enjoyed the movie much more.
