What an upgrade from a Mavic Air
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I've had a Mavic Air I've used since 2019. Loved it, and still runs great. That was my first drone, and my first experience with drones. I've flown RC aircraft and helicopters for decades and flying the drone for the first time was like magic. After so many years of helicopters, having something just stay in PLACE like that, as if some supreme being was holding it in the air, was amazing. The camera was outstanding, and it was very responsive. It's also three- or four-year-old technology. So when I saw this, I knew it was going to be worth getting. I have no need of the telephoto lens they removed from this to make it a "classic" versus the standard DJI Mavic 3. A bit of a cost savings was not going to hurt me or my use. The first thing I noted while unpacking everything was the controller. When I first placed the order for this, I did not realize it was coming with the better controller. I almost bought one off of an online retailer before this arrived because I knew I didn't want to have to use my phone or a tablet anymore. When I saw in the details that this came with the DJI RC controller, I was happy. And it did not disappoint. Pulling it out of the box, finding the sticks and screwing them in, and just holding it and feeling it, I knew I would be in love. It has some texture underneath for a good grip and feels great in the hands. Everything unpacked with minimal fuss. I hooked up the battery and the controller to charge, both came with about 20% charge. Once they were finished, I ran through the initial setup. This was my first bit of disappointment with the controller. Because of the setup routine. It was a bit picky about the keyboard sometimes, and I was getting tired of having to dismiss the keyboard to get at the "NEXT" button underneath. Would have been easier had the return button on the keyboard done the same thing. The setup went fine, got it on my home wireless, and it immediately found updates for the controller and drone. About 1.5 GB or so in size, so it didn't take too long. Once that was finished, and everything rebooted and was current, it offered me the chance to sign up right from this screen for the DJI Refresh program. I'm a fan of that since while I did not have to use it for my Mavic Air, to me it's cheap insurance. Especially for something more expensive than the Mavic Air was. But the purchase was absolutely impossible on the controller. It had no problems with me logging into the DJI store with my account, it automatically added the serial number of the drone, but when it came time to enter my name, email address, and phone number, it refused to take ANYTHING on the top line for name. I tried first name last name (which was what I ultimately put in that line when I had to go onto my laptop and purchase it via a web browser when this kept failing) but the space bar refused to work on that page. I could put nothing that it accepted. I finally backed up and told it not to do that and got past it to the actual drone controller software. So that was my initial disappointment with the controller. I tried to spend 250 dollars and it wouldn't LET me... First world problems, and if that's the worst thing I come across on it, I'll be thrilled. I knew I wanted to really test this thing out. I live near a small airport, so around my house I'm limited in scope of what I can do. But our family has a TON of land in the upper peninsula of Michigan, all ours, nobody else around. So that was the perfect place to give this a try. I gathered up the Mavic Air as well and spent 3 1/2 hours in my Wrangler driving up the interstate. I only had one good day of weather coming up in the next week or so. The area I was flying in has a few houses, a pond, an old rockpile where people used to shoot, plenty of fields, and an absolute TON of forest. With nobody nearby I knew I could really stretch this thing's wings out and see what it could do. I knew I was too late for the beautiful colors of fall, being the very beginning of November, but it would still let me get some really nice footage. And it would be nice to plan out my flight path and do it on both the Mavic Air as well as the Mavic 3 Classic, so I could do some direct comparisons between the older technology and their newest addition to the family. Spent several hours flying there, doing the same things with both drones. And there's no doubt, the Mavic 3 Classic outperformed the one I'm used to in every possible way. First of all, it took me about 5 minutes of doing the annoying calibration dance with the Mavic Air, spinning it in different orientations until it FINALLY accepted the calibration and would let me fly that first time. Mavic 3? NO delay. Powered it on, powered on the controller, set it down, and I was off. No muss, no fuss. With the Mavic Air I was getting quite a bit of warnings about interference when I hit 100M altitude. It warned me about the problems with the signal, and I could see the jumpy video on my iPhone as it struggled with the signal. This hasn't happened before with this drone for me, so there may be something specific in this area. Exact same place, same height, and the Mavic 3 had no signal issue at all. I have to do more playing and learning about the avoidance system. It works well, but I know that there will be times I'm going to want to override it to get the shots I want. From what I've seen in some forum posts, the options for that are limited. So this could be a constraint in some circumstances. But I was glad I had it a few times when I was misjudging the distance from the trees from a few hundred yards away and it kicked in. The video is notably better than the Mavic Air. And while I love the videos, I really like getting photos. This has a two-stage shutter button, partial press kicks in the auto focus, and you can specify on the screen what to focus on. Then pulling it totally in actually takes the shot. MUCH nicer than the system I had on the Mavic Air. The DJI RC controller has a very good screen, so easy to see, with all the data you could need. I'm still learning all that can be done with this. All the controls are easily accessible without having to reach. And the two programmable buttons on the bottom are a nice touch, reminiscent of my Xbox Elite controllers. It is great to have buttons that can change either as you learn new tricks, or just mapping functions for different kinds of drone use. Battery life definitely is up there. With only the single battery on my first flights I couldn't really stretch the controller out. But two flights taking the battery from 100 to about 30% and the controller still hasn't dropped an LED for the battery level. The onboard storage can be accessed simply by plugging the drone into a computer and turning it on. Quick and easy to pull things off of the built in 8 GB. Granted, the 1 TB from the Cine model would've been much more usable - 8 GB just doesn't give you a lot of recording space. But it supports large Micro SD Cards and those are pretty cheap now even for the newer faster type this wants. It has a strap system reminiscent of Bane from Batman to hold the props in place for transport and storage. My Air had 2 modes, normal and sport. This has those as well as the Cine mode, which is really great for getting smooth, sweeping shots. It really reduces input, so things are gentle and graceful as you move and turn for some great quality video footage. Sport mode really is fun though, this thing scoots when you want it to. Much like the Air, this is surprisingly stable in the breeze. I have video shots showing plants and grasses blowing as it stands still and doesn't show any buffeting or bouncing while it holds its position. Sure, this won't be the same in serious winds, but it is so forgiving in slower winds. I already had purchased a waterproof case for this, and it fits well. Next purchase will be a couple batteries and a better charging system. I got used to the multi battery charger I have with my Mavic Air, so charging a single battery at a time feels a bit slow now. But I do like that out of the box you charge the battery right in the drone rather than having to use a separate kind of plug. The charger has two outputs, one for the controller, one for the drone. Noise level wasn't really any more noticeable than my Mavic Air was with the supposedly quiet props on it. I expected the larger one to make more noise, but it was very comparable. I ride a Vespa and belong to a few Vespa groups, so I'm looking forward to spring when we're out riding again, and I can get some really good shots of group events and using the drone to follow riders for some great action shots. Not something I can do at this point in November though in Wisconsin... I've already lined up someone to purchase the Mavic Air since I'm SO pleased with this one. It has exceeded my expectations in every respect.

||Posted . Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. Was a little hesitant about buying from Best Buy. But they had just about the best price plus their protection plan, you could not beat it. If you crash the drone, break it, they give you a new one right on the spot in the store. No questions asked 5 out of five, no-brainer to me. D j's eyeplane you had to send a drone in.
