DO NOT BUY - DJI is Bricking its Drones!

I just got off the phone with DJI and I couldn't believe what I was hearing. A few months ago, I ignored the other reviews on the Mavic Air where people has issues with the drone crashing, DJI not standing behind their product, and warranty issues not being honored, and I STILL bought the Mavic Air. Loved it for the first 2 months but then something odd happened. After the firmware update, when I was flying it on a regular flight path I have been doing for months, I experienced signal interference (I was only 1500 ft from it) on my phone. I immediately raised it higher in the air (I was already at 165', well above the tree line) to see if it would be a better signal. As I started running toward it, the video feed went out. I figured it was just hovering there where it last received signal, however when I arrived I found it in pieces on the ground. On the flight playback, it showed the drone at the spot it lost signal and it just went straight down. DJI said that when it loses signal, its supposed to hover, UNTIL the battery runs down, then Return To Home. It did none of these. SO I went out and bought a second to verify the drone couldn't have hit any obstacle that would have caused it to drop straight down. Sure enough it was all good for a flight path. No obstacles. However, I also upgraded the second drone to the new firmware, and sure enough, at the same point as the first drone, the second also gave me notification that there is signal interference. Fortunately I was able to recover it before it had a chance to crash. Before the firmware update, I regularly flew twice the distance and without so much as a hiccup. So, back to my conversation with DJI. They said that even though the drone didn't do what it was supposed to do, they wouldn't replace it. I asked why the range is so severely limited (and why they don't use radio frequency vs wifi even though they know its a better transmission but he wouldn't respond to that) and he said that if I calibrate the compass, it should give me better range. I haven't tried that, but just knowing that they know its an issue, not doing anything about it or alerting customers, and with the latest firmware, it essentially is making every drone out there vulnerable to crashing, and not letting people know that they can avoid losing their $1000 investment, is the most immoral and unethical standard of practice. Basically, they want you to spend another $1000 for a new drone, and another $1000, and another $1000, and another $1000 UNTIL you realize that they can't be trusted. This company would not stand behind their product and admitted to me that they know its and issue and aren't telling people about it. One other issue I realized is that when the battery gets low, it enables a "Return To Home" function where its programmed to fly straight UP to an altitude to about 100 feet and fly back to a home spot. Note: there are no obstacle avoidance sensors on the top to protect the flight path up. And, there is not a manual override with the Joysticks to prevent this from happening. So I was flying back to the spot I was at and was only 10 yds away from it when this mode kicked in. Unfortunately, I was flying under a tree. As you might imagine my state of shock when it suddenly flew up into the branches of the tree, and I was powerless to control it manually with the joysticks. Honestly I would like to meet the "brains" who programmed that function - they probably go a raise from the company because of all the additional business it brought to DJI with people having to replace their broken drones. Needless to say, DJI, a Chinese company, DOES NOT care about their customers. THEY WANT YOUR MONEY. Do not trust them to make a quality product that is meant to last. As in my case with 2 drones, they both have been bricked to malfunction and DJI will blame you when it crashes. I will be returning both. DJI IS NOT A COMPANY I CAN TRUST ANYMORE!

      DJI Support

Hi PT33. We're really sorry to hear of your accident and frustrating experience. I'd like to take this opportunity to clarify a few things for other users that may be reading this.

      1) We use WiFi because it has a bandwidth large enough to transmit HD video with low latency, necessary for the use of our drones.

      2) You can adjust the RTH manually to ensure it doesn't go higher than you'd like. You can even disable it. When RTH is triggered via low-battery, stick inputs will be able to adjust the height of the aircraft if you are within control range.

      3) Compass calibrations should be done by every pilot at some point in time and the compass has nothing to do with the range of the aircraft.

      4) If the aircraft is within 65ft of the home point it is programmed not to ascend by default and within 10ft it is programmed to simply land where it is.

      5) For most people, VLOS is around 500ft - 1000ft. It's very important to always have your aircraft in visual line of sight for safety reasons.

      6) Firmware updates are always designed only to improve the stability of the aircraft as well is improve user experiences and add new functions.

      7) DJI cares greatly for its customers and we ensure as much as possible that if the drone of DJI GO 4 App is responsible for an accident it is replaced with a new or equally functional aircraft. Safety is one of our top priorities and solving any issue that affects the safety of the aircraft is always our top priority, though it happens very rarely.

If an accident occurs, it's important to work with our customer support staff and ensure flight logs are sent over for evaluation. DJISupport

I guess I’ve had this thing for about a month and it is impressive! Just having a new point of view on your world is extraordinary! It’s incredibly easy and intuitive to fly. The tracking modes or follow me are the real star. Sometimes they do lose you and stop following, however when it stops it just pauses and safely waits for you to tell it what to do next. The smart capture modes allow easy creation of epic selfies and shots that reveal a much larger scene than your intended point of focus resulting in epic cinematic results. Battery life seems to be as rated. I’ve never had the low battery warning come on and felt like, “That’s it?”. I definitely recommend the fly more combo. The bag is far better than what you get with the standard set up, the extra batteries are great (Total 3 rather than 1), I intend to buy a fourth battery eventually. The internal memory is great for the moments you forget to bring, or erase your memory card. But it is only 8 Gigs and is not a substitute for a micro-SD Card. Perhaps the best feature of this drone is it’s compact size. Folded it’s about the size of the Spark, but almost as capable as the MavicPro. You do have to fold the legs in order. To open it’s, “Rear, rear, front, front”... Don’t forget to flip down the legs as they are antennas that help increase transmission range to the remote control. To close it, fold down the legs, then reverse the sequence. “Front, front, rear, rear”. The main thing is to watch the orientation of the propellers. Once closed there are parts of the front legs and gimbal cover that interfere with the rotation of the blades. I’m not sure if this is intentional to keep them from sticking out in any direction at anytime, or an oversite and an annoyance. I can’t imagine with the thought and engineering that went into this product that anything was unintentional. In short, this drone is the Goldielocks Drone, right size, right in the middle of the price range and nearly full featured. I would recommend this product to anyone not just a friend!

Never really flew a drone before so I was really skeptical paying this much for a first drone. After reading a lot of good reviews I ended up buying one anyway and boy I did not regret it. After reading just a small bit of instructions and updating software it was ready to fly. And fly it did. So effortlessly and easy that you really have to try for it to crash. It’s unbelievable how stable it is even on a breezy day. The software is loaded with all kind of settings so it took me a couple days familiarizing to adjust what is best. This drone comes with front, back, and bottom sensors for peace of mind flying. It has sport mode(faster and fun) to turn off all sensors automatically once you become better. I have already made a drone video of our family at a beach and everyone was impressed of the quality from it. I was able to fly this pretty far at some point it was couple miles out. Make sure the mobile device is plugged in with the remote and not use WiFi as I found its range very limited. I went with DJI as they are well known to make quality drones and I’m very satisfy thus far. Pros- DJI Is A Proven Drone Company Good 4K Camera Decent Battery Life(21mins) High Quality Built Very Sharp Looking Very Easy To Fly Cons- Cost High For A First Drone Software Needs An Update

I bought the Mavic Air a week before heading out for two video and photo projects in Florida. I already carry a lot of camera gear, so wanted a lightweight, high-quality-images drone. At 1 pound and 4K video files, Mavic Air fit the bill. I'm not a techie, so I practiced five days in a row before leaving. There's no actual Owner's Manual, though there is a Quick Start guide included. Online DJI tutorials don't explain how to calibrate the system, yet the drone won't fly unless it IS calibrated. Fortunately, several Mavic Air users have filled in the gaps with their own how-to YouTube videos. How did we perform? Thanks to my operator error, I flew the drone right into an orange tree on the second flight. Had to climb up to retrieve it. Chipped off a piece of one propeller (I highly recommend 1) purchasing DJI Care for $89/year and 2) using the propeller guards, which prevented more damage) and I flew it again without replacing that one propeller. Buy the Fly More package -- several spare propellers included. On the fourth flight on a different day, I flew the drone right into a tall palm tree. A park ranger fished it out of the fronds with a long bamboo pole. The pole slipped and the droned crashed several feet onto the ground. No damage! Flew it again within a minute. This thing is a champ! And I'm very pleased with the video footage as well as the stills. Worth every penny. By the end of my assignment, I was much more comfortable with the Mavic Air. I think we bonded :)

    Amazing First Drone So Far!

This was my first drone purchase and I couldn’t be happier with the Mavic Air. Out of the box it was ready to fly but I would absolutely recommend the Fly More combo simply for the extra batteries. To go out to the park and fly the drone with one battery at about 18-21 minutes of flight time just isn’t enough. The fly more combo also comes with a nice carrying bag and the charging HUB which makes everything compact and portable. My main reason for choosing this drone was the portable size for travel combined with the 4k video and flight control functions. I’ve never used the Mavic pro but in all the comparisons I looked at, for the pricing and video quality, anything afforded by the extra price of the Pro felt like diminished returns. So far I’ve flown the drone twice and there is a learning curve. I keep watching YouTube videos on how to use functions and how to get the most out of my drone in the safest way. I’m giving this 5 stars because I absolutely love it and feel like DJI made a quality product for the amateur drone photographer. For anyone less tech savvy or unwilling to put in a little extra time to learn the Mavic Air’s features, I would recommend a more beginner level drone. I hope this helps!

I was very excited to purchase the Mavic Air Fly More Combo. I carefully unboxed the product, read the instructions, and began charging the batteries. I was impressed with the quality of the product until I discovered that the remote was not charging. I unplugged the cable and plugged it back in with no success. I checked and double checked to make sure that the cable was facing the proper direction. Everything was as it should be, but it would not charge. The port has an awkwardly shaped rectangular crevice that accommodates the proprietary smart phone cables nicely, but leaves too much room for the v-shaped micro USB charging cable. If it were USB-C there probably wouldn't be an issue. Without having a chance to fly the Mavic Air, I returned it. The store didn't have a replacement in the same color. I am debating whether or not I will purchase another one. If I do, I will leave the smart phone cable plugged into in the charging port and use adaptors to make that cable work for charging. The proprietary smart phone cables fill the entire rectangle space in the charging port unlike the micro USB v-shaped connector. That way the cable will never be unplugged from the remote. It should prologue the life of the port and keep the dust out. As of 4/14/18 DJI doesn't offer Mavic Air remote controls.

This is my second Drone. I bought my first Drone a few years back when they first came out, and basically all it had was GPS and I had to get really good at guessing. Lots of fly always, but luckily I was able to find it. Ready for an upgrade I did a ton of research and found the DJI Mavic Air to be the right Drone for me. Wow, I am so glad I made this purchase. What a piece of technology. Using my cell phone and attaching it to the controller, I no longer have to guess. I can see the airspace limitations following FAA rules. I can also se my altitude, speed, direction and best of all, exactly the view from the 4K camera to film video and pictures. The return home feature works perfectly. I can not say enough about this Drone. Having 3 batteries is a definite plus! Flight time is about 20 minutes.

I bought this drone about a month ago for casual picture and video taking around Eastern North Carolina. The video quality is very good as are the pictures. After the initial set up an update to the firmware in the Maps day-to-day use of the drone is very easy and has a quick deployment time. The batteries have hey close to advertised flight time, with the colder weather I’m getting about 18 to 20 minutes per battery in normal mode and about 15 to 18 minutes in sport mode. The DJI Mavic Air is a well-built very good flying drone. The DJI controller feels sturdy in the hand and not cheaply made. Cell phone integration is simple and comes with a variety of connectors for a variety of different phones. I would recommend this drone for a casual user or a professional user who needs a more compact easy to bring with you drone :)

I am a professional magazine photographer who now has to make various social media posts and I bought this to help my video game. It works great, is easy to fly, and the video stands on its own or is easily edited in with other footage (for example my iPhone X and Nikon d850 video clips). The video quality is okay. It’s great for Facebook/instagram (shoot in 4K and downsize last). Photo quality is iffy, but usable. The panoramic mode works well, but really needs to be stitched together using photoshop (or similar) to fix exposure irregularities (even in manual). The biggest complaint is that the actual packaging contains very little instructional information and the online resources are almost as bad. You have to watch stupid you tube video after video to get all the info you need to get all you can from your drone.

The Mavic Air is a great drone for flying in small spaces. It’s easy to transport and the small size does not intimidate “Non drone people”. Most people think it is a toy and do not realize it has a camera on it. That is a good thing. I only had one neighbor come into my yard to see it because he heard it and thought it was a bunch of hornets. Incidentally a couple of days later I was stung ten times by hornets in my yard but that is a different story. The drone practically flies itself using ground sensors and GPS. I’m used to flying cheap squirrelly drones that drift all over the place. The Mavic Air just sits where you leave it. The 4K video is very sharp and can be configured to your taste. This is a great drone for having fun. Watch the YouTube videos and decide for yourself. I bought the Fly More package which I recommend but if you want to save $200 you can purchase the standard package.

I’ve only had the opportunity to fly this “Quadcopter” drone once, but with the fly more kit that was 45-50 minutes of flying and learning. Charge all batteries and the remote when you get it, and you’ll be able to have lots of fun. The drone is very small, and fits in a supplied zipper pouch that you can toss in a back pack to take anywhere. I flew with a friend that has the Mavic Pro (also a great drone) and while I had just a bit more interference (though we were flying near power lines), I never lost connection/video reception with the drone. The footage it takes looks incredible, and you can find more than a dozen YouTube videos showing you how to best optimize the video settings if you play to take it into Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro or any other editor. Overall, lots of fun and so far a great product.

So I have been flying an autel x star premium for about 2 years without a problem it has a carrying case that felt like I was taking a carryon on a plane With that being said I now own this fine machine thanks to my wife for giving me the green light. I have only flown it once since I got it on 1-26-19. From just one flight and how much I flew my other drone I can say that this little compact drone is a monster. No joke. I like the fact that it has 3 batteries 3 sets of blades a carrying case that is small and other gear that make this combo pack a killer deal. I noticed that the multi battery charging dock only charges one battery at a time but it’s not a big deal to me. It just keep that in mind I will update after 3 more months of flying

So, i had 2 options 1 DJI Air and second Mavic Pro. But i decided to go with the air since its the latest drone from DJI. I wanted the Asteroid shot, looked cool. I bought the fly more combo, loved how the drone is so small easy to just carry around. Enough said, bought the drone, brought it home charged all 3 batteries. Excited to fly, performed all the updates requirement, confirmed everything was updated. Took it to an open field, tried to fly it as far as possible, it kept losing signal between 20-30 meters. figured it was a setting. checked everything, seemed ok. Tried again, still maximum flight was between 20-30 meters. and it was never returned home when it lost signal. I had to wait until the battery on the drone ran out, then it was landed at where it was. never returned to home. Had it for about 2 weeks. Returned it back to bestbuy. :(

So this supposed to be the best small 4K drone and much more quiet than the Pro morel, but unfortunately not entirely. The footage quality is great, and I shot on auto and on s-log everything looks nice so I am super happy with that. The sound on the other hand is obnoxious. It may be quieter but because it has different pitch you can hear this drone for forever, and thats just annoying as pro model sound would disparate quite quickly when you go up. with this one I went to max altitude allowed and I still could hear it. So I hope they are going to release new silent propellers soon. Besides the fact that my drone came with a defected GPS unit I think this drone still worth the money and accessories in the Fly More combo are great. I would still recommend it just keep in mind its not as quite as you expect.

My 2nd quadcopter. My family purchased a cheap (~$140) one for me that didn't last 2 days. It was unstable, impossible to control and after my son crashed into a fence, it was toast, and no parts available to repair. This Mavic on the other hand is rock stable, easy to control, stays put while you think about what you're going to do next. The videos it produces are stunningly sharp and steady. There is a bit of a learning curve with all the features it offers, but you can start out in beginner mode for a quick start and then check out youtube tutorials to learn more later. Great fun and highly recommended.

I'm not a professional drone pilot. I'm just out having fun, enjoying the flight experience and taking occasional scenic videos. I've bought the toys and fun with them. I did a ton of drone research. Focused on DJI. Found the Mavic Air was the best pre-professional drone for me. More than the Spark, less (but more) than the Mavic Pro/Platinum. In my opinion, for the type of drone consumer I am, the Air takes it! Easy to fly, fast, great features and very quite (regardless of what the Platinum pilots say:). Sooo much fun and it takes GREAT 4K video shots, no fuss, no muss. Price point on Fly More package is excellent. I highly recommend if you are a casual drone consumer looking for fun with great features and video quality!

I love the Mavic Air! It an amazing little piece of technology. I only wish the folks at BestBuy had been a bit more knowledgeable about FAA drone regulations. Keep in mind that you have to register your drone with the FAA and you can’t fly within 5miles of an airport or helipad without calling the control tower. Unless you are in the middle of nowhere, it’s next to impossible to find areas to “legally” fly your drone. It’s a bit of a headache to be honest. Because of thid, I have not been able go enjoy my drone nearly as freely as I expected. Since you can’t return your drone withoutpaying a 15% restocking fee, Best Buy employees should warn you about the regulations. For those new to drones: Please do your research about drone regulations before you purchase a drone.

I like that the Mavic Air is so small and compact. The drawback is that you need to carry additional batteries because each battery gets you a good 15 minutes or so of flying time. Make sure to update the firmware and charge up your batteries the night before you plan on flying it. Unless you have good cellular service where you are going to fly, it would be best to update the firmware while connected to a strong WiFi signal. Or else, you might not be able to fly it at all. One annoying thing about the Mavic Air is that you have to calibrate it almost every time you turn it on after a long time of non usage. BUY EXTRA BATTERIES!!!!

Really debated on the Air or Spark or Pro. Spark seemed a little limited and the Pro a little more than I wanted to spend so settled on the Air and am very pleased. Flight control is great and stable, the bag while small is perfectly sized for everything you get in the fly more combo and the extra batteries are great to keep the fun going. Has been cold every time I’ve flown and I’ve been pretty conservative bringing it home when it battery gets low so have averaged around 16 minutes a flight. Still learning all the different features and my kids like piloting it as well. Overall this is a great little drone - no regrets on the purchase.

In terms of function, this drone does a lot, and does it very well. Hover is rock solid, unless you’re trying to fly in very gusty winds. Video at 4K is nothing short of jaw-dropping, but the file does get very big. On the negative side, I strongly recommend getting a set of landing gear extensions - without them, the camera is far too close to the ground. As to the FMC (vs. the base package), I’m glad I got it. Having the extra batteries is much more convenient than having to charge between flights, and another set of props is always a good thing to have. This already gets you to the break even point, so the charging bank, and shoulder bag are essentially bonuses. I have recommended to a friend, who also is very satisfied.
