Bravo to Best Buy for carrying the release/re-release of the original Doctor Who series on DVD. While they may not sell as many as the current incarnation of the series, replacing bootlegs of 70s/80s PBS reruns means a lot to a guy who grew up with the Doctor and wants to pass on 50+ years of history (and history lessons) on to his own kids someday! Not a lot to say about the product itself - barebones packaging is to be expected given the pure volume of content they're releasing. As is the case with many transfers of early scifi to DVD, there's the occasional jump-cut, "weak" special effect or slightly off-kilter soundtrack moments - but that's part of the fun of rewatching something that enthralled you decades ago! I will say that Troughton is probably amongst the least-heralded and most important actors to take on the character. If it weren't for his successful portrayal as the second incarnation (and first regeneration) of the Doctor, a second generation of Whovians wouldn't exist today.

Classic Troughton and the intro of the Bridadier

Patrick Troughton is arguably the best Doctor, the one others pattern the role after. Imagine how hard it must have been to be the first to go through regeneration and make the audience believe that while its a new actor, that this person is still the Doctor. It had never been done before. The whole series could have failed had Troughton not pulled it off. Web of Fear presents the best features of the second Doctor. He's witty, friendly, is able to lull the enemy in by acting the buffoon and capture them with his genius. The Yeti is a classic enemy who was brought back briefly for the 20th anniversary special, The Five Doctors. The episode also featured the Great Intelligence which has been brought back in some recent Matt Smith episodes.

I first read the novelization of this story when I was in High School and it was frightening. When I learned it was one of the lost stories the BBC burned, I was extremely bummed. But now that I have ween it, I realize how great the writing was and how the cheesy special effects make the story come to life. If only "The Abominable Snowman" was complete. It would be great to be able to enjoy both Yeti stories. I am eager for more "lost" stories from this era to be found.

One of the more complete serials in the @nd Doctor's collection. Only episode 3 had to be recreated. This one marks the return of the Yeti & the first appearence of Commander Stewert from UNIT.

An oldie but a goodie. Dr Who fans will enjoy watching one of the earlier episodes complete with characteristic DW plot and cheesy low-tech props. A classic!
