Doctor X will build a creature...

Actually the good Doctor doesn't actually build a creature but there's lots of pre-code fun to be had here with the great Lionel Atwill and a young Fay Wray. Director Michael Curtiz would go on to helm much more famous films (Casablanca, Mildred Pierce) but Doctor X has a certain charm that can't be denied. The film does suffer from corny slapstick and comic relief but there are solid moments here of mystery and horror. The main reason to get this disc is the the glorious restoration of the two-strip Technicolor that is a wonder to behold. It really is something to see. The film looks and sounds absolutely stunning. The amount of work that went into this restoration is miraculous and much thanks goes to the UCLA Film and Television Archive for their efforts. A black and white version was shot at the same time and that is also included on this must-own disc. Don't hesitate -- add this slice of legendary horror to your collection now!

    Early technicolor horror, gloriously restored

Historically, this is an amazing disc. The color version of the film was lost for DECADES and the Warner Archive did a miraculous job restoring it. Two versions are on here, the color version shot in two strip technicolor and the simultaneously produced black and white version shot with different cameras on different angles with entirely other takes. Tonally, there is some weirdness in one of the lead performances (comedic while the rest of the film is absolutely not) but there is a lot for a fan of older horror films to love. Highly recommended.

This was a great little gem of a film. Warner Archive does it time and time again with stellar transfers of older films. This set includes both the B&W version and the 3-strip color edition, which looks amazing in HD!
