An Awesome Release of an ‘80s Classic

88 Films is a UK-based distributor making densely content-loaded releases of old films in Region B (aka not the US). As a US-based person, this is sad (it’s not impossible to get a multi-region player, but still). Recently they’ve announced a number of martial arts releases to the US (thank you), so I’ve pre-ordered a few, and we’ve started the year with Dragons Forever (1988).
First off, it actually turned out to be the limited edition version, which has an outer cardboard case to hold the plastic disc case as well as a booklet and poster! I’m not sure if this is on offer indefinitely or if I just lucked out by pre-ordering, but obviously it was a welcome surprise.
As for the contents of the discs (one 4k and one standard blu-ray), I’ve attached a pic of the back of the case to see for yourself, but suffice it to say there’s a lot. Three different cuts of the film; a few mixes of Cantonese as well as two different English dubs; two different commentaries from industry experts/enthusiasts; and a slew of interviews. Absolutely the kind of product made for fans. While not the cheapest home video purchase you could make, it’s actually on par with a lot of new releases from major studios and given the incredible amount of content, it feels more than reasonable!
I mainly wanted to review this release, but to say a bit about the film itself, it’s an absolute classic. Notable as (sadly) the last in a string of films to feature three opera school brothers Sammo Hung, Jackie Chan, and Yuen Biao together on-screen (this film also includes brother Yuen Wah as the hilarious and impeccably dressed Main Bad Guy). It showcases a wide variety of their skills, both action and physical comedy. Yuen Biao’s portrayal of a… neurodivergent man plagued with existential questions is particularly entertaining. And if you like movies with martial arts brawls, this stuff is top tier.
I guess if I had to make a criticism/warning, I’ve tended to find that HK action comedies of the ‘80s/’90s can be particularly polarized in content (i.e. spread from extremely whacky to very dark or violent), so parts of this may feel surprisingly dark for an “action comedy”. Late in the movie, for example, there’s an absurd courtroom scene straight out of a romcom that’s interspersed with depictions of a character having drugs forced on him as a sort of torture/punishment. I could understand the big mood shifts being off-putting, but I just think it’s a great ride. Or maybe if you don’t find physical comedy entertaining… I don’t know, check other review sources if you’re still unsure – but if you’re into martial arts comedies I doubt you’ll regret it!
I’m not knowledgeable about licensing or what exactly we can expect in the future, but as it stands there are four other 88 Films releases (totalling seven movies) currently for pre-order through Best Buy. And while there are no guarantees, they seem to always aim for this content-packed type of release, so I’m certainly excited.
(if you have trouble searching, those releases are: Police Story 3: Supercop (also in 4k), Gorgeous, Magnificent Warriors, and In the Line of Duty I–IV)

10/10 packaging, quick delivery, AMAZING transfer of this Jackie Chan/Sammo Hung classic. I hope 88 Films gets the rights to maybe Armor of God or Project A or maybe even Legend of Drunken Master!
