DROBO (Data Robotics) is a network attached storage device. I just purchased my fourth device from Drobo's product line. If you have critical data that you just can't afford to lose, and a lot of it, Drobo is just the ticket. It flawlessly protects your data by self backing it up. Unless the device fails, your hard drives are protected. I have had Drobo's continuously running for 5 years without a device failing. Hard drives have failed with zero loss of data. The device allows you to partition off private shares, so users have eyes only safety with protected data. Great product!

    Solid NAS w Redundant Data

I have had the Drobo 5N for years & am happy w it. The main reason to get this drive is if you need a NAS that has Redundant data in case of disk failure. The Drobo 5n also has a feature called duel disk redundancy. If you enable this option you will not loose any data even if 2 drives fail simultaneously! The down side is that you have much less usable disk space since alot of it is reserved to protect the data. This is made worse by the current 16TB limit on the total disk space that a Drobo 5N can see. The Drobo 5d is a similar product except it is not a NAS & can only be connected to one pc at a time. The 5d has a max size of 32TB. Another negative is that it has an email alert feature, but gmail will not work with it stating the method employed by the Drobo Dashboard software is old/unsecure. On the plus side, you can start off with two 3.5" HDDs or SDs & when you run out of space you can simply insert another HDD/SD into one of the slots & the Drobo will take care of everything else. You can repeat this until you either fill up the 5 available slots OR you reach the 16TB limit. What is nice about Drobo as opposed to the Synology & other RAID devices is that you can mismatch drives. RAID devices typically mandate the use of drives of the exact same capacity & sometimes even the same manufacturer. The 5N will also alert you if one of your drives is failing with a red light so you can replace it. If you are running low on space it will alert you as well. In addition to the 5 HDD/SD slots, the 5N has an mSATA slot to accommodate an mSATA SSD. This is not used for main disk storage but rather as an accelerator port to speed up data transfer. I have installed an mSATA drive but did not notice any performance improvement & would not recommend installing one.

This NAS works very well. The setup was a little bit challenging, but no real problems, It was money well spent. The drives are "hot swappable." which is a real good advantage
