Big sound in a tiny package
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I have started playing bass again after many years away from it, and was looking for a decent practice amp that could also do a bit more. As I explored what was available out there I figured out what I valued most. First and foremost, it had to sound great, not just adequate. It should be compact enough to fit into a small room and be easy to transport. It should have enough power for jams and gigs in larger rooms, and have DI to connect to a mixer for bigger sound or for recording. It should have a headphone jack for late night practice, a FX send-return loop, have AUX in, and be able to accommodate a tuner. It should be expandable, should I need more speakers, and have a consistent upgrade path should I need more power with the same great sound. And it should not have anything I do not need or want to deal with, such as complex controls, built-in effects, emulation of other things, etc. First and foremost, it has to sound great by itself. Then size, power, flexibility, and features. The Eden Gig Ready kit delivers on all this, with everything I need and nothing I do not. This is a high quality professional grade bass amp head + cabinet kit you can grow into, not a limited entry level system you will outgrow. The WTX-264 is the junior sibling of the Eden World Traveler line, has all the tonal and connection features of its big brothers, and kicks out 260-300W of fat bass power to a 4 ohm speaker load. The tiny little cabinet can take it and puts out amazing sound. The Gig Ready kit listed in the Best Buy catalog is the EGRW264, which comes with the EX110 10-inch speaker cabinet. I paid $50 more to special order the EGRW1264 kit with the EX112 12-inch cabinet, still tiny at roughly 15x15x15 dimensions and perfect for my small space. I have heard of some people ordering a pair of the 8 ohm versions of these cabs (the ones in the Gig Ready kits are 4 ohms for max sound in the smallest package) to build their own mini-stacks. Eden offers (and Best Buy sells) a very robust line of bass speaker cabinets, so there is a fine upgrade path when you need to move more air. Eden amps have amazing sound with simple but effective EQ tone controls, if you even need them. The Enhance control really is a "magic knob" and is pretty much all I use. They say it simultaneously boosts the very low bass, upper mids, and high frequencies. It is simple to use and sounds great. A little bit goes a long way. Another thing I like is the bass boost that kicks in when you pull out the Bass tone control. This lets you get those sweet rich lows when playing at low volume. I usually leave all the other EQ flat. The Eden Gig Ready package is not cheap when compared to 50W combo amps or most of the combo and mini-stack offerings from other bass amp makers, so I ended up spending a couple hundred dollars more than I thought I would because I had rather ambitious requirements (see above) and was not willing to settle for less. The Eden slogan is "Never Compromise". I did not. The Gig Ready kits deliver great value, and are actually a real sweet package deal when compared with buying the same or similar components individually. I was a little surprised to find Eden bass amps at Best Buy, and even more surprised when I walked into the musical instruments shop at the BB store in Reston VA and found a Gig Ready kit prominently displayed, sitting on a counter with recording gear rather than lost in the crowd with all the bigger but lesser amps down the aisle. I tried it out with a Jazz bass in the store and had to look no more. And even though the special order process looked like it might take 6 weeks to get my gear, I had it in about 10 days. I am very happy with my Eden Gig Ready kit, and with the support from the friendly folks at the Best Buy musical instruments store in Reston VA. I would recommend Eden bass amps to anyone serious about great bass sound, and would recommend this specific kit to anyone who who wants that great bass sound in a tiny package. You get what you pay for.
