Eden Lake is an overlooked entry in the foreign-made horror catalog, but word-of-mouth amongst genre fans should change that. This was a reasonably low budget British film that suffered a very limited theatrical run here in the States late last October and received surprisingly strong reviews from many well-known critics and web-sites. I say surprisingly only because the kind of heavy and prolonged brutality that the two protagonists face at the hands of some "local hoodies" in the latter half of the film is often labeled by these same critics as "gratuitous" or "unpleasant." Fortunately, said critics were able to see past Eden Lake's bloody and disturbing veneer and found the superior thriller that lay beneath.
If you enjoy films like Wolf Creek, Them(Ils), The Strangers, or The Hills Have Eyes, by all means give Eden Lake a shot.

If you're watching this as a survival horror/ slasher film, FORGET IT! This is the worst display of survival I've ever seen! Sorry to spoil it, but they don't survive! How can you call it a survival movie, if they don't survive?! They're an ignorant weak-minded city couple that allows themselves to be bullied and ultimately killed by a group of teenagers no older than 15! And don't give me that 'strength in numbers' nonsense, THEY'RE KIDS!!! Ignore the female for a moment, the guy in this was a complete wuss! There's a scene where one of the kids tries to stab him while thier rottweiler tries to attack him. He ends up pushing the blade into the dog, incidently killing it, then appologizes to the kids?! This, by the way, is after they stole his car, disrespected his wife, and tried to kill him! What are you appologizing for! IDIOT! The wife just stands around stupified while her husband gets killed! If you love your spouse, DO SOMETHING!!! I've never seen such a display of weakness in a film. We're not talking about Jason, Micheal Myers, or some serial killer, THEY'RE KIDS!!! I'm sorry, but my wife and I grew up hard in the south with a mix of country and city street smarts. If it were us in this position, the film wouldn't have made it past 20 minutes. End of story! We kept looking at one another through the whole movie laughing and saying, 'What are they doing?!' If you want to see a real film about survival, watch While She Was Out, with Kim Basinger. That's survival, and she does it by herself!
