    Playing to their strengths

On their latest release, Egomaniac, South African band Kongos largely play to their strengths and build on what they've done previously. I found that the accordion plays more of a part in the foundation of these songs, and the vibe here is generally more uptempo, with less of the Coldplay-esque balladry of their previous release. The band has a very distinctive sound which is welcome in this day and age of formulaic music dominating the market, and is what you would hope for if you liked their earlier material. The band doesn't reinvent the wheel and it doesn't make a bid for spins on pop radio, but it does deliver what you would expect along with some maturity, a chemistry that can only come from a band of brothers, and enough surprises to keep you engaged.

Actually it could be their third... Bottom line is they are doubling up on the songwriting and sound and we're all the luckier for it!

Not nearly as good as Lunatic

I had high hopes for this new album. Lunatic was excellent all the way through and the band sounded great at Austin City Liimits Festival two years ago. Unfortunately, now that I've bought and listened to the album, I'm really not impressed. It's "okay", there's nothing terrible about it, but compared to Lunatic it's bland and uninspiring.

Good folk rock music. Strong drumming. Similar to Rusted Root.

    Third album a throwaway.

The first and last tracks are the only good things about this album, the only songs that have the energy from "Lunatic." This album is all over the place, with the overall feeling that the Kongos are going for that soccer-mom-cool-rock vibe that Imagine Dragons spews out. The songs are trying to be catchy and clever. Cute. Granted, this could be an effort by the Kongos to show their musical diversity, but it comes across as bland and boring. My mind wandered as I listened, and not in a good way.

The Kongos took the momentum from their first album and expanded on it. You get the same unique sound. The accordion, for me, is what gives them their sound. If you liked the first album, get this one.

Great follow up album for Kongos. I was looking forward to it and it is just as good if not better than the album before it.

    Great Album, but buyer beware...

This is an awesome album by a great band. However, the CD is edited. I bought the Parental Advisory version only to get home and hear that the disc was the clean version. I took it to the store and exchanged it, but the second copy was clean, too. I guess it must be a manufacturer error. Otherwise, great album. Let me know if anyone else is having this problem, please.

The Egomaniac CD is not quite as good as the Lunatic CD but, Lunatic is exceptional. Kongos stay true to their music style so, if you liked Lunatic, you should at least listen to Egomaniac. At the end of the day, if you are a Kongos fan, you should acquire Egomaniac.
