Orally, this film is very intellectually academic. The actual historical players in the piece talk in complex contemplative sentences, reciting forth pretty much any ponderous reflections or musings they may be considering without social editing. And while this is going on, the screen fills with images of the most wild and creative visualizations you are ever likely to see. The overall effect transcends these separate elements, becoming a hypnotic fever dream of seductive fascination that faithful followers of Director Peter Greenaway have come to expect from him, an expectation he never fails to deliver. For the uninitiated, be warned. This is not Hollywood blockbuster entertainment. Instead, one must anticipate a non-linear assault of the senses, both thoughtfully considered and subversively erotic. Words fail.
