SURGE PROTECTOR
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Appears to be a good buy so far....have not had any major power surges since the old Panamax bit the dust. However.... it was hard to believe that when I needed this there was only ONE SURGE PROTECTOR of any brand in ALL of Houston at the time. Time will tell on the performance aspect of this versus the Panamax which only lasted 3.5 years before sacrificing itself to the Texas power surges.

Watch home theater with a bright LED in your eyes!
||Posted . Owned for 2 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. It shines a bright LED light right into your eyes which makes it impossible to have anywhere near where you're sitting while using your home theater. The installers from Best Buy said that the bright LED light cannot be adjusted. So you have to plan on covering it up with something. What an oversight not to be able to dim it down to nothing if one wants.

Surge Protection is not the only danger
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. There are many surge protectors available, many smaller, many listing a much higher rating of Joules of Protection. But typically protecting against a rare big surge is all they do. A powerful surge can cause a sudden and dramatic failure, so it gets a lot of attention. But there are other very common power issues that break down your electrical devices subtly over time. The devices in a home typically see numerous voltage fluctuations throughout the day in the form of power sags, dips, swells, and surges in voltage. The power in a home is never steady. Sags and ;pmg periods of undervoltage are very common in the summer when demand is high from air conditioners and increased refrigerator draw. Lightning storms, even those miles away can affect the power in your home. These fluctuations can slowly wear down and damage your electronics by breaking down insulation, electronic components, and overexcitation of the power transformer. Ever notice the lights dim or flicker when an appliance turns on or changes to a higher power draw? e.g. A washing machine beginning a cycle, a toaster oven cycling on, or Microwave cycling on with that deep hum? It's pretty common. That flickering is caused by a voltage fluctuation, a dip in power due to a big draw pulling power from the circuit and away from other devices. The motors in appliances can also inject electrical noise back into the home's electrical system. The ProteK has some heft, it's not a skimpy mostly empty box. The ELAC ProteK is not only a Surge Protector, but a Power filter that will filter out electrical noise, providing the clean power that electronics need in order to continue performing their best. If the power exceeds 135 Volts or drops below 95 Volts, power to all outlets will be turned off until the incoming voltage returns to a safe level. You do not get this extra level of protection in a power strip surge protector. While some power strips have a higher Joule rating, the ProteK does not rely on dealing with that, it will disconnect the outlets if the voltage gets high. The ProteK comes with $500,000 of Equipment Insurance. That confidence from ELAC means more to me than a higher Joule rating. My new home office gets hot from running a few computers and other devices. I added a small room air conditioner to supplement the central AC in the summer. The first time I turned on the AC unit, the power backup alarm went off as it supplied power from its battery to my main PC. The LED status panel on the backup unit showed the line voltage went down to 86 volts. Another older PC I use for testing that was not on the UPS locked up for a minute, started to reboot, and then died. The power supply failed, burnt smelling smoke was coming from it. It had a big name surge protector strip on it, which did nothing on a power sag. Lessons learned. I mapped out every outlet and light in my house to each circuit so I never put electronics on with a heavy power drawing device again. I added True Sine Wave UPS's to my TV equipment rack and other computers. My stereo had a surge protector, but it needed protection from sags as well. Now it does. Both speaker amps are in the high current draw outlets and other components plug into the other outlets. There are also two USB outlets. The ProteK status LED's show my wall outlet is properly wired, grounded, and my stereo is protected, Thanks to the EMI/RFI Noise Filtering it should continue to provide my stereo clean AC power while protecting it from brownouts and surges. It's early spring. The power meters on the ProteK and my UPS units are pretty solid at 120 Volts, +/- 1 volt. Come summer days I'll see it down to 115 volts for long periods, some dips even lower. I feel better with the ProTek in place protecting my stereo.

Awesome Power Strip!!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Well, let me start off by saying that surge protectors have really come a long way! Enter the ELAC Proteck 8 Outlet surge protector. With today's high-tech appliances and electronic equipment being so sensitive and very expensive, it's nice to know that you can protect your investments from dangerous spikes and power surges. If your device is supplied with excess voltage which the item can't handle, a surge occurs. If the surge last more than 1-3 billionths of a second, it's a spike. I know this is technical, but for a layperson, just knowing that your expensive refrigerator, Flat Screen TV, stereo, can literally be fried and ruined in a blink of an eye. Your items can also be subjected to harmful spikes by powering them on or off. An electrical storm is yet another worry, therefore protecting your items should be paramount. The Elac Proteck surge protector provides an extra level of protection of your electronics by providing the over or under voltage protection, which essentially cuts off the incoming electrical voltage should certain parameters be met. Once everything returns to normal, power is reconnected to your devices when "normal" or safe voltage levels return. One feature that I love is the Status LED's. The LED lets you know that your plugged-in devices are grounded and are pulling the correct amount of voltage from your outlets. Personally, I am using my surge protector on my very expensive refrigerator. Living in south Florida we have some many electrical storms that I can't even begin to count them. Knowing that I have a device which is going to provide protection is a really nice feeling. Another nice feature of this surge protector is having dual USB charging ports. So, you have an extra way of charging your USB devices. This unit has LED indicators so you can easily see if your devices are fully protected. You can also see if the ground of the outlet is operational as well as reversed polarity. The surge protector plug rotates in any direction needed so that you can plug your strip into an electrical socket in any direction needed. In closing, this is a really nicely made surge protector. Having that piece of mind that my expensive refrigerator is fully protected. I plan on getting another one to protect my computer, monitor and flat screen TV. It's worth the investment.

Quality Power Conditioner and Surge Protector
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Unboxed the Elac 8 Outlet Component Surge Protector and Power Conditioner with Dual USB ports tonight. The box contained the unit and a couple of pages of user instructions. I’m not sure how to know exactly how this thing is supposed to work, but I’ll post my experience with it. I chose a spot below the TV and went about trying to plug it in. I have a large wall unit that takes a floor jack and a block of wood to move it away from the wall. There was just enough room to reach behind the TV and unplug a power strip with a standard-length plug. I figured since the Elac had a flat plug, it would be a snap. Nope! A few choice words and a trip to the garage to try and figure out how to get it to line up with the outlet holes was on the to-do list. If I was one of those guys that read the box and manual I would have been done already. But I had to learn the hard way that the engineers that designed this unit placed a nice 360-degree plug on the end of the cord. Tada! I turn the cord the way I need to behind the cabinet and then rotate the plug to match. I was able to get it to start into the outlet, but due to the limited space, I didn’t have the muscle to push it in. A few taps from my linesmen pliers and I was in business. I have been trying to remove the hiss from my turntable this week. I have it hooked up to a high-end amp and at volumes over thirty-five, I can hear a hiss or noise when the music stops. I replaced the RCA cables and the ground with new shielded ones, and it helped a bit. I’m not sure if the clean power helps, but now the noise is noticeable at volumes over 45-50. I plugged the amp into group 1 and the turntable into group 2. After seeing the rotating plug notice on the box, I took the time to read the guide. It said group 1 is for high current units like amplifiers. Another thing I saw and don’t know if this is from the surge protector is that the amplifier isn’t as hot as it usually is after playing a few LPs. I leave the glass door open for 10-15 minutes after using it to let the heat dissipate, but when I finished today, the top where it vents was warm, but not hot. Again, I don’t know if this is supposed to do that, but something did. As for the unit. Everything was functioning as it should be. The first two LEDs are on lit blue, and the 3rd and 4th are unlit. I see 119v to 120v when nothing is running and 118v when I had the amp and turntable on. I did dim the panel to the lowest setting. I wish it were able to fully turn off when viewing a movie, but for regular viewing, the lowest setting works. I’ll make a black cover to block it when I’m into a good flick. The front outlet and two USB/A ports will be handy for charging tablets, phones, and other items we all seem to have laying around. I guess I should post that I have the TV plugged into group 1 as well but will move it to group 2 if I have another high current unit to plug into my entertainment center. For now, that’s my experience with the unit. It’s nice to have a quality power source for my electronics. I’ll be honest and say I was using a 6-outlet power strip from Wallyworld, and I doubt it did much to reassure me that my investments were safe. Now I have a warm fuzzy feeling that they stand a chance should a power surge come down the line.

A Great Product I Hope I Never Need!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The greatest thing I can actually say about the ELAC ProteK 8 Outet Component Surge Protector/Power Conditioner with Dual USB is that fortunately I have not needed the protection it provides yet. So I will have to approach this review from a different direction. First of all, it is a very sleek and very modern-looking piece of equipment. It is well made and has quite a substantial feel to it, which leads me to believe it is not simply a cheap, mass-produced product. Of course there are eight outlets, one on the front and 7 in the rear. There are also two USB charging ports on the front of the unit. An absolutely great feature is the 8-foot power cord that allows you a great deal of versatility in the placement of the unit. I need to point out that the unit does have a bit of a footprint, meaning it may need to be placed off your work space if you have limited desk room. I have two laptops, two monitors, and a couple other pieces of electronics that pretty well forced me to place the unit on a box next to my desk until I can come up with something a little more suitable. ELAC states it is rack mountable, which would make this the perfect addition to a music system, PA system, or what have you. One of the first things you will notice is the absolute lack of noise. I mean, not even the slightest hum. Another thing is the compact, well-thought-out design. With all the needed information displayed on the front, you will not have to move it around to see any additional input on the back of the unit. On the front you have the incoming voltage display. In the past I was playing around with my multimeter and measured the voltage in my electrical outlets. It measured at 123+/- volts...the ELAC measured the exact same voltage, so that reinforced my belief that it is indeed a high quality piece of equipment. There is a Protected/Clean Power indicator, a Ground OK indicator, a Reversed Polarity indicator, and an Unsafe Voltage indicator on the front. Again, a very concise and intuitive design. One thing I can attest to is that it does indeed filter out noise. I have an older set of computer speakers that are very good at picking up noise in the AC lines. When I plugged them into the ELAC unit, there was no noise at all in the speakers. When it is all said and done, one of the greatest statements of reliability comes when a company stands behind its product. ELAC offers up to $500,000 in connected equipment insurance. I think its obvious they stand behind their product. For that reason, I would heartily recommend the ELAC ProteK 8 Outlet Component Surge Protector/Power Conditioner with Dual USB as a vital addition to your electronics inventory.

Essential for protecting your high tech gear!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This power surge protector and conditioner is simple and built with high quality in mind! Setup is as easy as finding a spot for it on your rack/shelf and then plugging in the equipment in to the back. After plugging in my home theater and computer equipment I can actually say I feel confident that the the equipment that's plugged in is protected not only from spikes/sags but surges and changes/issues with polarity with the real-time LED's and voltage display. What's interesting is that it seems like my sound system actually sounds better at high volume with this on it than it did without which is likely a result of the EMF/line conditioner that removes interference from the lines. Not all modern power supplies are sensitive to this as some have their own built-in filters, but any true audiophile and some sensitive electronics can work without it but tend to operate much better with clean power. How much noise/interference it will filter out depends on many factors inside your home (what devices share the same circuits) and the quality of power your utility is providing. In terms of what I can tell in using it, it does seem like the audio quality out of my sound system is better at high volumes as you don't get as much of that background hiss/noise but more importantly I feel confident that this unit would protect the expensive equipment plugged in should there be a sudden event occur. Things I love about this particular unit are the 8-foot cord with the 360 plug on the end. I like that the display can be dimmed but in my case it's not seen in my setup so doesn't matter but is good to know for others. It has two groups of plugs one for low power/more sensitive equipment and one for high power equipment and it filters them separately. What's awesome is there's a plug on the front and USB ports which I would have been a lot happier to see a USB-C capable plug because a lot of newer tech uses that and uses higher power Quick Charge ports.. so that would be the only thing I could see as something that might be important to others. In my case, not a big deal as I don't have anything in the rack that uses anything but I could see a case down the road where I might want to plug in a phone or tablet to charge while it's displaying or playing content but there's a plug on the front so in reality it's not a huge deal. In short, this is a solid piece of equipment and one I'd recommend for any home theater/sound system setup. I'm going to get another one for my computer/HAM radio setup as well.
