    Not a true 16x9 movie.

This review is only about the DVD itself, not the movie. It's not "Enhanced Widescreen for 16x9 TV" like it says in the listing. It's a 4x3 format with a 16x9 letterboxed movie. My DVD player and computer only recognize it as 4x3. It will not play fullscreen. Normal for 2000, before 16x9 screens were common. Not acceptable in 2021. Returned it for a refund.

This is actually a surprisingly decent movie from Pauly Shore, whose character shows a good heart and good intentions throughout, even in spite of Pauly Shore's usual goofy spaced out demeanor. Shore and a friend find the frozen body of a caveman in their swimming pool. The caveman thaws out and the hilarity ensues. Shore's friend wants to use the caveman as a ticket to popularity, while Shore begins to feel there is something not quite right about exploiting a real - and lost - human that way. Brendan Frasier gives a charming performance as the caveman, one the one hand hamming it up for laughs, and on the other provoking tenderness and empathy. Many reasons to enjoy this movie!

'Encino Man' is a great movie. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this non-anamorphic letterbox widescreen dvd, as it is missing audio in certain scenes, and I think possibly some footage too. (most noticeably missing is the audio in the scene where Brendan Fraser spins Pauly Shore on his shoulders and then throws him while they're watching wrestling. Shore's line, 'Oh! My pancreas' is missing). This movie deserves better dvd treatment.
