Ergo Proxy takes place in a futuristic world where the government has ultimate control over people's everyday life. Romdo (the name of the city the main characters live in) seems like a place of perfection, when in reality it's a place of corruption where the people in power can do whatever they please to whomever they please, and no one is even allowed to question their authority without severe consequence. Re-l Mayer (the awesome-looking lady with the gun on the cover) works as a detective in the intelligence bureau and lives a comfortable life because of her grandfather's high rank in the government. After being attacked by a strange being (a proxy), she soon begins to realize that the world that she knew isn't anything like how she previously portrayed it. Her newfound curoisity takes her on an adventure into the unknown outside world where she begins to find out the truth about everything including her whole life. This anime has a very dark style (with a little bit of romance), and little spurts of comedy in just the right places. The animation itself is superb, and there are even some of those nonsense episodes where even though they're kind of crazy (in a good way) they are essential to showing the chaos of human emotions at their peak. Every time you finish watching an episode, you're left on the edge of your seat, and wondering what's going to happen in the next one. I couldn't recommend this DVD enough to anyone, and all I can really say is that it's well worth the money, and that the box is nice to have (since you'll probably buy the rest of the series anyway after seeing this).
