This was more of a completion purchase than anything else. The movie, much like The Cursed Child feels awkward and detached from the source material we’re given before it and almost feels like its trying to undue all the hard work it’s predecessors set up for it. A new unheard of dumbledore that didnt come out during the ministry and rita skeeters attempts to discredit Albus Dumbledore during all of Order of the Phoenix is absurd. So I like the steelbook and loved Fantastic Beasts but so much pressure has now been placed on the third movie that you have to think, alot of what was in this movie that was considered story set up felt wasted. They’ve made the error of promising without saying it aloud that they are giving us Albus Dumbledore and Grindelwalds epic battle, the most impressive duel between two wizards ever. I’d hate to think that we have to weave through these unneeded subplots to get to what we truly want 3 movies away from now. Its tough to also ask for the quality and freshness of Fantastic Beasts while incorporating Newt whom we all love and care about now and how his part helps shape the wizarding world we’ve come to love. Its honestly a waste of Jude Law as well. He was billed a key cast member, but took the backseat and his presence was felt throughout the movie more so than anything else. Hopefully the third movie will rectify that as well. I know Newt is central, but this movie has now almost made the story we’ve only heard about be more satisfying to crave. I always hoped a prequel showcasing Dumbledore and Grindelwalds relationship would emerge. There is still time to course correct for the future.

As a devoted fan to all things J.K. Rowling, I was delighted to see this further development and deepening of the characters associated with Harry Potter. And as her second foray into the world of screenwriting, I believe "The Crimes of Grindlewald" is an excellent effort. That said, from a dramaturgical perspective, I would have a couple of concerns. For a viewer coming to this film without any prior knowledge of the Harry Potter Universe, especially for those who have not read the books, much of the inner meaning might be somewhat lost. With regard to character development, I did wish that more depth was given to the motivations of the young Dumbledore, who is quite intriguing, but a bit enigmatic in this film. Also, the very endearing character of Queenie takes an inexplicable turn for the dark arts, and I would have liked to see this further explored. Perhaps both of these concerns will be addressed in a future film. Despite these concerns, I would still highly recommend this film for anyone who has come to love the world of Harry Potter, as I have. And I hope that Rowling continues to explore her prodigious abilities as a screenwriter.

The movie decently leaves you wondering what is going to happened next, adds to many new faces and has a few peaces that need to be explained. But it is an in between movie so honesty if you look at an other "build up movie" that is how they are. Critics and fans a like seem to love them less because of this. However for what it is, this movie is beautiful. Setting the stage is never an easy task, still this movie sets things up so that you have the chance to get a feel for the important people. Witch is where I feel a lot of others fail. It is honestly sad to see such low ratings for it. They seem to focus on the possible plot holes before waiting to see if they actually are. Witch we will see in the next movie. I think then the movie will "make more sence" and the reviews may be better. Yes, I am a manager Harry Potter fan, I love what J.K. has created however I do not like everything. The Cursed Child showed have never been made. I point this out just incase someone says I'm just giving a good review because it's from the story I love. I just ask that anyone looking at this movie keep in mind it is a middle movie and is supposed to leave a lot to question. If it didn't it would have to be the last movie.

Hooked by Harry--and Now Newt, Too

Okay, I admit it. I am hooked by the Harry Potter series, both books and films, and now their various spin-offs too, so if you are not a fan of the franchise, "The Crimes of Grindelwald" isn't for you. It is a direct sequel to the first "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them," taking up where the original installment left off. Eddie Redmayne is back as intrepid magical beast wrangler Newt Scamander as well as all the principals (Tina, Jacob, Queenie) of that earlier adventure (sans Colin Ferrell, unfortunately), battling the authoritarian dark arts wizard played by a menacing Johnny Depp, who is looking to start a war against all things Muggle. Like lots of previous second installments (this series is scheduled to go five rounds), "Crimes" is much darker and heavily plotted than "Beasts," but it has terrific effects and production values that makes the 3D version of this home video release worth the extra money. It also introduces Jude Law as a young Albus Dumbledore into the mix. If you're into this fantasy series, you'll want to add this to your collection.

If you loved Harry Potter, and his world you're going to love the adventures of Newt Scamander, creature whisperer of all magical creatures great and small. I would highly recommend watching the previous movie first. It's title was "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them". These movies have everything in them we loved in the Harry Potter world and stories. Newt is a wizard who has a special afinity with and love of magical creatures. These beasts are scary and dangerous but Newt teaches us that if you take the time to learn and understand them you can prevent them attacking you and build a respectful rapport, which is what he does with every creature he encounters. There is of course much more to the story, there are bad guys trying to take over the world and even though Newt would like to remain on the sidelines, he and all his friends, animal and wizard and muggle, alike get dragged into the fray. It's the eternal good vs. evil with a little love and romance and heartbreak thrown in. This is the second movie in a trilogy so we have to wait for the third movie to see how it all shakes out.

I didn't enjoy this entry as much as the original. I understand that its primary focus is supposed to be Grendalwald, which is all well and good but it seems to leave little else for the other characters to do. They never really seem to have a reason to be a part of the story. Johnny Depp does well enough as the titular villain but he contradicts himself trying to justify his motives and by the end of the film, it all doesn't make since. I also had a problem with some of the character progression, a lot of which comes outta nowhere and ends up feeling cheap. Either way it can still be an enjoyable romp, if you don't get caught up in the semantics. The effects are still incredible, especially in the opening act, and aside from a few, many of the characters remain loveable and endearing. Shouts out to Jude Law, who does an admirable job as Dumbledore. I would save this one for Red Box unless you're a collector.

Second Installment As Good As the First

This movie has been nominated for multiple awards and I can see why, this second installment into the prequel series that leads into Harry Potter is amazing! At the end of the first film, the powerful Dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald was captured by the Magical Congress of the United States of America, with the help of Newt Scamander. At the beginning of this movie, Grindelwald escaped custody and has set about gathering followers. In an effort to thwart Grindelwald's plans, Albus Dumbledore asks his former student Newt Scamander, to help, unaware of the dangers that lie ahead. Lines are drawn as a divide appears to grow in the wizarding world. This movie keeps your attention throughout and frustrates you in the end because there clearly will be at least a third installment. Looking forward to the next movie in this series!

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016) is one of my favorite films. The filmakers (for FBWFT) were able to capture the same Harry Potter magic we know and love and incorporate it into a whole new story full of sinster plots, new settings, wonderful creatures, and an extremely amazing cast. Sadly, the Crimes of Grindlewald did not meet my expectations of a sequel. Creating a setting one year apart from the first film, the filmakers struggled to rekindle the same flame that once fueled the bond between the main characters, as well as strained to piece together all the events that conspired in a fashion that flows and keeps the moviegoer intrigued with the plot. As for the next line of movies to come from this saga, I hope the time is taken to consider what can be done better. I recommend to watch this to build your own opinion.

There is a lot going on in this imaginative film. The plot and characters are still being developed, even though this is the 2nd movie. It's no less interesting, and the story still draws you in, especially if you are the typical J.K .Rowling fan. Non-fans, or those who are simply looking for some magic, an array of new creatures, along with curious activities might also be interested. However, this film, unlike the first of this series, is simply not watchable as a stand alone. Video Quality (3D and Blu-ray: Video is relentlessly dark. Very dark in both 3D and the Blu-ray. And then there are the darker scenes. Good grief. The 3D effects are special in a few places and adds to the overall film most of the time. But, it's all very dark, in case you missed my earlier comments.

This is the second installment of the "Fantastic Beasts" series. I really liked the 1st installment but this movie just didn't really do the trick for me. There was absolutely nothing to complain about visually - the movie was even more stunning than the first one. The problem this movie had for me was its plot, or rather, its almost non-existing plot. This movie just seemed to serve as background information for the upcoming movies in this series, like a setup for things to come. It introduced many new characters and revealed certain things about already known characters. This movie is definitely not a waste of money and is worth a look for the secrets revealed.

For someone who loves the Harry Potter story so much, I am really glad that J.K. Rowling has written some more of her amazing adventures. In Fantastic Beasts, we get to take an exciting ride alongside Newt Scamander, played so sweetly by Eddie Redmayne, and all his fantastic beasts. Bringing a younger Dumbledore and Grindelwald to the 2nd part of the prequel story was a great addition. With the always wonderful Johnny Depp, playing the psychopath, Grindelwald, and Jude Law as the beloved Dumbledore, one of our favorite literary wizards, adds to the depth of the story. I highly recommend this film to those who love an exciting and magical ride. I look forward to the 3rd film in the series!!!

While not as good as the first Fantastic Beasts movie, Crimes of Grindelwald is still a good folow-up. Once again, the primary cast is fine and Johnny Depp as Grindelwald stands out. He goes from raw power to subtle persuasion without missing a beat. Oddly, when I saw this in the theater, I felt that the story lines were a bit too muddled but watching it a home was more satisfying experience. The plots played out in a more cohesive way. The Dolby Vision picture was tack sharp and the Atmos soundtrack got the job done. All in all, Crimes turned out to be more of an engaging movie on second viewing and one that should hold up on further viewings.

While the slipcover banner does advertise an "Extended Cut", said cut is actually just a bonus feature for the digital version. This means that it cannot be watched offline on several vendors, such as iTunes, Vudu, or Amazon. I ended up downloading the Extended Cut onto my computer via Microsoft Movies and TV, but I was limited to 720p. Fortunately the digital code uses the lenient Movies Anywhere service, but the value of this product will be significantly reduced a year from now when the codes expire. Outside of this one setback, the product's quality and value is comparable to other Warner Bros. AAA releases.

The Blu Ray Movie in question was part of an order of a number of Blu Ray movie I purchased an had shipped to me via Best Buy. Overall the movie and service were very good. Fantastic Beasts did not disappoint as there were plenty action and plot twists to be had.The visuals were stunning, one might even say epic at some points, especially if you have a larger screen television. I did purchase the 3D combo version, but will not comment on it as I only watched the stand alone Blu-ray version. Overall, believe that this was a good purchase and recommend it to those who enjoyed the Harry Potter series. KPW

As a middle film in a trilogy, there is always going to be a lot of content to work through in order to set the stage for what is to come. Here all of the relationships are being stretched and broken and sides are being chosen, but we are starting to get a glimpse of how far reaching the impacts will be leading up to the eventual confrontation with Grindelwald. The characters continue to develop, and the CGI creatures continue to steal the show for the lighter moments. Overall, it was an enjoyable film and we are looking forward to the final installment.

The movie looks and sounds amazing. The 3D adds additional depth, however the color palette used in the production is overall flat, lacking in color with the exception of a few scenes. Audio is active across all channels, most pronounced during action scenes containing magic. The story as a whole is only "okay", leaving the viewer with little to no connection to any character, and rendering the emotional experience distant and without heart. I recommend it as a 3D movie, but it is only passable as an installment in the world of the Hogwarts franchise.

Not all sequels are bad. This is a worthy watch! Nothing really ever beats the original movie. I like the Fantastic Beasts movies more than the Harry Potter series! It's geared more towards the "not so young" crowd and has a good story line. Love Johnny Depp (always) even when he isn't a "nice guy". Word has it, there's a third movie going to be released, so you kinda have to watch this one if you want to keep up. *SPOILER* I wish the relationship between Dumbledore and Grindlewald had been elaborated on a a bit more.

I like most of the characters in Fantastic Beasts, but even in this sequel it still lacks that special something that would make it feel truly connected to the Harry Potter universe. Depp is good as Grindelwald, but the overall tone just feels drab. If you keep up with the Harry Potter universe, go ahead and buy this movie–the special effects are serviceable and it does look nice in 4K, but that's about all I have to say about it. I barely remember the plot, and that's not a good sign of things to come from this series.

I purchased this movie because 3d movies are getting harder and harder to find, and I really enjoyed the characters and the first movie. Without going into any details of the plot, this movie just wasn't as much fun as the first, and to me, a little harder to understand. With that said though, visually, this is a very satisfying film to watch in 3-D. It was done very well in spite of the fact quite a large portion of the movie was shot in the dark. The 3-D comes across very well, and there's no other way I'd prefer to watch this movie.
