Classic of the German Silent Cinema

This 1926 silent film unites Goethe's classic tale of Faust and the skills of the classic expressionist director of early German films, F. W. Murnau. Some of the images in this film, such as the devil looming over the village as his shadow seems to consume the town, are powerful -- even accounting for the fact that the special effects are primitive by today's standards. Murnau (best known for Nosferatu [1922] and Sunrise [1927]) was one of the most creative of the early directors and his skills are in full flower in this film. This is a treat!
