Expensive grinder with cool design with some catch

The Fellow Ode is an excellent grinder with a really cool and modern design with decent capabilities. However, this is not a “jack-of-all-trades” grinder - it’s designed for a very specific job: grind consistently for “brewing” coffee. And alas that excludes espresso or any kind of coffee that requires fine coffee-grinds. Thus if you need a single grinder for the whole range of use, this is not it.
From a design perspective, this is a well-made appliance that has a bit of the no-nonsense aspect going on for it. The overall dimensions are on the smaller side - the height is low enough to slide under almost all types of kitchen cabinets I can think of when placed on the counter. But it is on the heavier side of things, which actually gives a good solid support when the motor is spinning at full speed. The big dial is the most prominent thing at the front, and the clicky mechanical feel I got when choosing my grind size is very satisfying. The dial goes all the way to 11 (literally), and has 3 steps in between, giving a total of 31 positions. Thus, I can do a lot of fine tuning. To give some guidelines, the cover on the hopper has a drawing to get some idea what can be some desirable grind-size for the particular brew - I however did not find it to be much helpful and found my ideal settings via trial and error.
Regarding the hopper - this is a single-dose machine meaning the amount of beans that can be ground at once is fairly small. So it’s all good for morning coffee and stuff, but if you need to brew a lot for guests etc. it creates an issue.
The operation is simple - load beans on the top hopper, dial to desired size, and press a button. The unit has an auto-stop feature, but I found it to be a bit inconsistent - sometimes leftover coffee grinds will make the unit operate for an unnecessarily long time before it shuts down. The speed is very impressive, and compared to my older grinder, the sound is much more tolerable. I have seen claims/comments that this is a very quiet grinder, but that I think is an overstatement. The grinder has a small “knocker'' to get excess grinds off, but that does not work very well. Even after tapping multiple times I still found a lot of debris in the chute, and it was messy. Ther magnetic catch has the same issue - the metal fins inside it to guide the coffee while pouring actually traps a lot of debris and again creates a mess that needs to be cleaned every time.
To sum up, the Fellow Ode grinder is an excellent piece of appliance from a design point of view - wherever I put it it catches peoples eyes. But it has its limitations. For this price, I’d love to get something that can cover the whole grind spectrum. I heard there’s a way to change out the burrs and get finer grinds out of this, but that needs extra money and effort which is not a great consumer experience. Also the operation is a bit messy due to the knocker being a dud, and the catch being hard to clear out. I hope Fellow follows up with a better one in the near future. For now, I need to get my hand grinder out to brew some espresso,

I really like this grinder but still not 100 percent sure it’s worth the price. Can I taste the difference between this and my $180 grinder? To a certain extent but the jury is still out. If you have to have it I would wait until after the summer when they are supposed to release an updated version.

Minor flaws but great grinds

For some time now, I had been looking into coffee grinders and came across the Fellow - Ode Electric Brew Grinder. The Fellow grinder is compact, which is great if you are limited in counter space.
When I received the grinder, I wasn't expecting it to be as heavy as it was, but that was a plus for me. This think is like a tank, which gave me the impression that it is good quality and built tough. In the box, you get the machine itself, a brush to clean it, and the usual paperwork.
As for the function, which is where one big flaw lies, the grinds are fantastic and the machine is quiet. But the tumbler needs improvement. I find myself having to guide/push the coffee beans down the tumbler because it gets jammed. I tried adding less coffee to see if it would work, but it didn't help much. I still found myself pushing the beans down by hand. Another issue with the machine is that things can get a bit messy. Every time I remove the coffee cup from the machine there are always coffee remnants on the lid and some end up on the cup pad itself. There is a lever on the side of the machines that is supposed to clear the chute, but I feel like it doesn't help much. You will still have coffee remnants around the cup and the pad.
Aside from those two issues, the machine works great. The coffee grinds are perfect and the machine is very quiet. I wasn't expecting it to be as quiet as it is, and found myself asking if the machine had grinder the coffee beans. The design, although simple, is elegant.
Overall, the Fellow - Olde Electric Brew Grinder works great. Aside from the minor inconveniences, I am happy with the Fellow grinder and continue to use it on the daily.

good grinder for a while but only lasted 2 years. Great for coffee beans that are bought from the store that are dry but not so great for fresh coffee beans which have more oils. For the price we would have expected it to last longer.

Highl quality grinder. Can't do espresso grind with burrs it comes with. But great for everything else. You can buy additional burrs if you need espresso grind.

A Must for Filter Coffee Lovers

As someone coming from an inexpensive traditional coffee grinder I can not recommend this product enough. Firstly, right out of the box, the product feels very high quality. As this will be sitting on kitchen counters the aesthetics are very important to which with its compact size and visually pleasing matte black appearance I definitely do not have any complaints leaving it on my counter between uses.
For those users that drink their individual cup of filtered coffee each day the performance of this grinder is as close as you could get to perfect. Firstly, with the magnetic catch can it is easy to get everything aligned and along with the "Knocker" you will not end up with grounds everywhere anymore. There are a variety of settings that can be used to which one thing to note is that if you do plan on using this for espressos that is the one area where this falls short. However, in my opinion, I would rather a product not try to be a one size fits all and instead excel in one area which is exactly what this grinder does. The speed at which it does complete grinding is extremely quick at roughly about 5 seconds, but the auto-off feature is nice so that you can step away and not have to worry about flipping a switch as with most grinders. Another thing I do have to mention with this grinder is how quiet it is as I know that it is a single-use grinder, but it is amazing how quiet it is while in use.
Overall, this grinder definitely sets itself apart and I understand the fanfare for the product after finally being able to use it. From the aesthetics of the product to the final product it produces I would definitely recommend this product to anyone looking for a single-serve grinder for filtered coffee.

Great grinder for coffee lovers

This is our first coffee grinder. My husband and I love making our own coffees. We use nespresso for the weekends and french press with a grocery bought ground coffee during the weekdays. We’ve always bought ground ones before and wanted to try that entire coffee making experience by getting our own grinder and see for ourselves what the difference it would make to our experience. We’ve so far used this little powerhorse for about a week. What attracted me really on this particular brand/model is the size. We have limited countertop space and this machine fit in the tiny spot left.
Overall, the Ode electric brew grinder is a great product! The price point might be a bit too much for a personal coffee grinder, but the quality is great. As a coffee lover, I definitely appreciate what this grinder does.
Pros:
⁃ Design is simplistic & modern
⁃ The number of settings allows this to cater to many different people.
⁃ Quality of build is very good.
⁃ More quiet than a lot of other grinder out there
⁃ Last course setting is perfect for using a French press
Cons:
⁃ Price point a bit too high
⁃ Still a little messy after grinds
⁃ I wish it could’ve ground finer
It might be a bit too early to see more flaws, but so far, it’s a great grinder for our needs.

Perfect Coffee Bean Grinder! For perfect coffee!

This is the best coffee bean grinder I have used. – I have used manual, blade and various burr grinders. None have compared to the Ode Brew Grinder. It looks awesome. It functions flawlessly. It is well designed. It is rugged. It is easy to maintain. – did I say Quiet? WOW!
It has a guide on the inside of the top cover/lid for grind size – great touch! It has a magnetic receptacle positioner. It has a “knocker” to help clear/clean the burrs. It is much quieter than any others I have used. The power cord is heavy duty. The footprint is minimal for the capacity. It looks like maintenance is simple and accessible if needed. – I have not needed any. The instructions are comprehensive and easy to follow.
Beautiful and functional but most importantly – Great Grinds!!!

Quiet and Good Looking Grinder

I’ve been using cheaper grinder for about 6 months and thought I would give this one a try. My old one is loud and doesn’t do a very good job grinding all the beans, I have to shake it up pretty hard to mix the grinds to get them all. Cue the Fellow Grinder…
My first impression was “this box is heavy!”. It sure wasn’t a lightweight item which always reflects quality to me, but I really wasn’t expecting so much weight. Setup was near-nothing, ready to grind within 30 seconds or less. It looks amazing, it has a modern black look to it that really accommodates any kitchen. The magnetic catch cup is nice as it’s easy to remove while keeping it in place. The settings dial is nice to let you pick the size of your grinds and tells you for what purpose the size is used for, its listed under the lid so you don’t forget.
After spending a few days with it already, I do have mixed feelings towards it. One thing I really enjoy about it is quietness it has for chopping up all those beans, almost pleasantly quiet. I would divert from using my old grinder because it was too loud in the morning and didn’t want to risk waking people up if I was grinding extra early. The first batch went great and did a good even job, but my second use of the grinder resulted in getting jammed. I followed the instructions to fix a minor jam, but it didn’t help. I ended up having to turn it upside down (keep in mind its weight) and shake all the beans out to get it working again. Used it a few more times just fine and then again, the same problem.
Aside from the jams, my coffee beans seem to get stuck going down into the grinder from the reservoir. By stuck, it just means they needed a little push. I’m sure it’s the texture on the beans that causes it, but its something to note. The grinder will typically continue grinding as long as beans are feeding into it, so its nice to just hit one button and have it all quietly done for you, but sometimes you just have to feed the beans in yourself.
One other small issue is it seems to get the grinds everywhere on the counter. There is a latch, called a “grinds knocker” you push (repeatedly) to help knock off any grinds between the grinder and the catch cup, but even then somehow it seems like I get grinds in places besides the catch can.
Overall, I think it’s a great looking grinder that could use a little more power and small design improvements. If it were at a more affordable price point, I probably wouldn’t be as picky, but I do expect more for a premium. Your experience may vary depending on the types of coffee beans you use though.

I love this grinder

I love this grinder.
This is my third burr grinder. My first grinder was the Capresso Infinity, which I donated to my office so my coworkers could enjoy real coffee and stop drinking that Keurig garbage. I replaced it with a Baratza Encore. Both of those first two burr grinders are what I would consider “good quality” entry-level grinders. Since owning those, however, there are a lot of other entry-level grinders on the market.
The Fellow Ode is NOT an entry-level grinder. That’s not to say that the Infinity or Encore were bad grinders—they do a great job for the price you pay. The Ode is certainly a significant step up.
The Ode is made from metal—not plastic—it feels substantial, rigid and high-quality. It is a good bit smaller than my previous grinders and takes up far less space on my counter. Best of all, it looks amazing. The minimalist design and matte black finish give it a modern and sleek look.
The hopper on the top of the Ode is much smaller than you often see on burr grinders, which sets this apart from the competition. My typical morning pot of coffee takes 60 grams of beans, which fits perfectly in the hopper with only a little room to spare.
The grind setting is controlled by a big (and beautiful) stepped knob on the front of the machine. As with any new coffee grinder, ‘dialing in’ your preferred grind sizes for your preferred brew types takes some effort, but Fellow includes a guide in the manual and on the inside of the hopper lid to help you narrow down what setting you need based upon the coffee you want.
Keep in mind that the Ode was designed specifically for grinding coffee — NOT espresso. From finest to coarsest, according to Fellow, you can grind the following:
- Prismo
- Cupping
- Aeropress
- Pour Over
- Automatic Drip
- French Press
- Cold Brew
The grounds are funneled into a cylindrical metal cup that is held in place by a magnet on the bottom of the machine. Grinding coffee can be messy, and the Ode does a decent job keeping the mess to a minimum. The Ode also has a knocker on the side to knock loose grounds that are left in the funneling mechanism within the grinder. It is well designed and easy to clean.
I don’t find the Ode to be especially loud or quiet, but it is extremely efficient. My 60g of beans (at “6” on the grind size selector) works through in under 10 seconds, which is significantly faster than either of my previous grinders. The grind itself is very consistent, too—I don’t find much variation in the size of individual grounds (although that is by eye only and not totally scientific).
The Ode is relatively easy to open if you want to thoroughly clean the burr set. The front of the machine snaps off easily to access the screws that get you to the internals. Fellow includes a cute brush to aid in that effort as well.
It looks great, is well-made, and it works efficiently. I don’t make espresso at home, so in many ways this machine is designed for people like me. I brew auto drip more than any other coffee, but I also do pour over, cupping and Aeropress from time to time. At $300, it is a little more than double the retail price of my previous grinder, which is not a small step up. Still, I whole heartedly believe that good coffee at home is worth the investment of good ingredients and good equipment, so I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this to someone who has some extra money to spend on a grinder.
That said, it is more than I need. My previous grinder did a perfectly fine job, and from a performance perspective I’d be content returning to it. I’d say the same is true for most home brewers—the Ode is certainly more than what is required to make good coffee at home. Personally, I tend to be ok paying a little bit extra for something that is well made and looks great, and that’s where the Ode fits for me. Functionally and visually, there isn’t anything to complain about here…there’s nothing I would change.

And looks good too. Pretty happy overall. My only complaint (and this is nitpicking) is the little cup is a little smaller than what I'd like for a full pot of coffee.
